A recent visit to Lundy Island reminded me of the QS outings that took place in the Summer term. They certainly went on until I left in 1970 but I wonder how long they continued.

Trips when I was there (65 - 70) included:

Lundy Island from Minehead - memorable for stink bombs and seeing a Chineses inmate sitting above a paddle (in those days it was a paddle steamer) being violently seasick. Ever see yellow turn green in front of your eyes?

The Bath and West Show - memorable for all the samples of alcoholic beverages. There were others too but they didn't taste as good

Longleat and Salisbury Cathedral - memories ? a long time in the bus!

A boat trip from Weston s Mare to Bristol via the Avon Gorge - memories? many

Butlins at Barry Island - no longer there - memories? Another inmate who had borrowed some trousers from me puked up all over them. Why? guess!

Any stories about those/other or later trips?

Biggles

Laurie

The Waverley did stop at Ilfracombe.

There was mention of 'walking the plank' - I seem to remember your name being top of the list, followed by Tony Budgett, but nobody could find a plank and it was thought too risky to have him behind anyone!

Nick,Allen,Biggles,

Your memory puts me to shame, I had forgotten all about the Paddle Steamer (Waverley ?) trip to Lundy, was it 1965 ?.
The stink bombs might have been supplied by me, but Williams would order Budget to let them off !!!
I think the ship stopped at Ilfracombe to pick up more passangers and I remember the rowing boat to get us on & off Lundy.

Allen, school uniform was purchased from a shop half way up Whiteladies road on the left hand side, the Ex Cotham boys must have been me,Williams & Budget, all my stink bombs were purchased on Christmas Steps in Bristol and the best chippy in the world (Nick, how do you know about Christmas steps, are you a born again Cothamite ?) at the bottom. When I used to bunk off Cotham School (sports days etc)I used to spend my time on Christmas Steps. Happy memories, thank's !!

Does anyone remember a boy call Tarr, his dad ran a pub near Quantock, and one school trip was to go "Wasailing" one evening at his pub. Men would shoot shotguns into the apple trees to scare away the witches to ensure a good apple crop for next year. Cider was then given to everyone (us boys as well) and red hot pokers were plunged into the cider to warm it up before drinking.
In fact, cider with Laurie.

History does repeat, I have just been told off for something I did not do at Quantock but have taken the blame for another boys action !!!,
Laurie

Shock Horror Probe!

Laurie not guilty of stink bomb outrage !!

Inside sources suggest this is possibly the only bomb outrage to occur at Quantock School with no direct involvement of Laurie (Mr Big) Booth - except for the possible supply of the ordinance...

Allen,
I never let off any bombs at Quantock, I supplied/made but kept well away from any detonations.
Biggles,
The Waverley still makes trips, this might make a good venue for a family type reunion ?
Very dangerous to have Budget behind you and I think Tarr. Walking the plank would have done me a lot of good.
The last time I saw Budget was in the early 70's when I went to vist an ex Cothamite in prison and Budget was there ! So I managed to see two old friends at the same time. I made the mistake of going to the local pub near the open prison, the landlord thought I was an escaped inmate and refused to serve me.

Budget at the moment is helping the police in Gloucester, and has managed to get a dawn raid on Richard William's (Richard Hope-Hawkins) flat in Bristol !!! What lovely people the Quantockians are.
I'm staying at Quantock Sat 24th August. I have promised Matron I will be good and will bring her a good bottle of wine, she did get the flowers sent from all of us at the March reunion and I will be seeing Richard at Williton Somerset along with ex Cothamite Patrick Cook. Richard is too scared to meet me at Quantock School.

It seems Quantock still thrives - I flew over (and did a couple of passes to see if anyone was in) last Saturday. There was a big marquee on the lawn by the old chapel and the semi circular gardens (with the fountain) was being dug up. Nobody to be seen except some children playing outside the stables block. Maybe the marquee was put up by the constabulary looking for evidence? After all the mail about goings on and things that went bang in the night I'm not surprised!

Biggles,
Matron has been very busy, since the March reunion she has had 100+ pupils per week on outward bound course's and they have now gone home. The tuck shop is still stocked and has told me to give Alex (my 8 year old son) plenty of pocket money to spend.

After all the heists mentioned on this site I am sure you could learn a thing or two.

I spent 6/7 years in Bristol and can confirm the Joke shop at the top of x-mas steps was still in action as of last year (next to the guys selling antique weapons etc) and the fine chips obtained from the chippy at the bottom .... the name, ... the name ... "Smiths" seems to ring a bell but is proabably well out - it is quite close to the "sugar loaf" pub.

I beliebve "Marshes" was the name of the school uniform shop halfway up Whiteladies road - I think it is no more now ....?

Biggles,
When I was talking to Matron a few days ago she gave me a good telling off over Smoking in "Gerry's" flat in March, me being told off just like the good old days, it was John Rose, not me, but I didn't rat on him, although he was smoking my fags !!! I tried to clear the room of the smell the next day but the windows had chains on them. I was smoking in the common room. I have now given up smoking and put on one and a half stone in weight (never felt so bad). I've had to promise to be good, so this I think, rules out a "Tuck Shop Heist" for the time being. It might be worth noting that anyone visiting Quantock, please do not smoke in the building (clock tower should be safe) especially the Dorms !!! It is Matron's home after all.

Mike,
I'm sure you are right about "Marshes" being the uniform shop. I should think it is closed now as it was just like "Are You Being Served" tv show.
What really worries me is the number of Quantockians that know Christmas Steps so well. The pub you mentioned used to be the head quarters for the Bristol National Front of which I was a member for several years, the antique gun shop you write about supplied me with a pin fire revolver and boxes of ammo. After our meetings we had chips from the chippy.

Guys,
The chip shop is called,"Pellegrinos'", the outfitter was called " Marshes" and is now defunct but my nice lambswool scarf is for sale to the highest bidder.

As for not stitching -up John Rose, I think that you may regret that one Laurie, what an opportunity missed.

Nick.

There was a Phillip Tarr at the school in the 80's - class of 89 I think.  I wonder if he's any relation to the Tarr mentioned by Laurie ?

Hi Will,
I remember drinking scrumpy with you and other boys in Tarr's pub at a Wassail !!!
The cider was heated up by sticking a red hot poker into it.

Hi, Jamie here:
Like Biggles, I remember Butlins, Weston Super Mare, Lundy, and I also remember visiting Blackpool, Cheddar Gorge, and Mrs. Leonard's farm as part of the school trip.  We had to write about our experiences on the trips.  I remember Leonard's dairy farm, we saw how cows are milked mechancially, and what happens to the milk after it is collected.  We has delicious food at her place, and everything was grown right there at the farm including luscious strawberries!
One particular Summer, my parents came over from Kenya.  They stayed at my uncle's house in Stanmore.  My mother decided to bake something, but she had never used a gas oven before.  In those days, you had to manually light the gas.  She did not, and went to take her bath.  When she came out, she wanted to check on the progress of her cooking.  The escaping gas ignited on the pilot light on the top burners and there was an explsoion.  My mother started to burn.  At that moment, my father came in form the outside, hugged her to smother the flames, and applied all kinds of cold cream on her before rushing her to the nearest doctor.  She had burn marks all over her so she could not socialize locally.  So my father decided we would take a trip into the Lake District, where we knew no one, so that we would get a break and my mom would not feel shame at seeing anyone she knew.  We visited all the Meres, e.g. Windermere, saw the fine china by Wedgwood,  saw the crooked steeple at one of the churches,  enjoyed the local cuisine, and returned to London after maybe ten days.
My mother finally recovered fully from the burns, I think it took a good six months or so.  She'll never do that again, you can bet!

Cheers

Jamie

Jamie,

Well I'm glad that your Mum was alright in the end!!

I hope you at least enjoyed the lakes ...

I also wondered wether you have any photos of when you were at the School or of any of your adventures ...
