Hi, I have slacked off a bit recently, it's been too hot to do anything!  My son is aiming for a black and white theme in his new house so mum has got to work on Z E B R A S............. here is a close up.  I have found that 99% of people who viewed the giraffes painting were very impressed with the realism and loved the 'photographic' effect.

Though the subject is simple, it was technically tedious to 'shade' with black/ white paint when it isn't - to create the perspective.  Another close up, can you see the folds of skin?  Can you see the subtle shades of blues and purples etc within the black and white stripes?

I just love this pose, it goes with my campanionship theme.  Of course, I had to make it impressive too with the size of canvas - it's 36ins by 24ins.  Hope you like it.            Lily

Back to painting - need to correct ...... certain features are not sitting - they are jumping out because of the lack of shading.  I will post it in my Album when it's finished.           Lily

Lily this is an incredible piece. I would hope that you would not feel uncomfortable, if I expressed to you, upon first observing this piece, I thought it was a photograph. Just appears so real.

I remember some years ago, an individual, was observing one of my photographs, and asked me, if it was a painting or a photograph, just from the photographic effect. I felt very complimented by there comment.

Yes Mimidot, it's the lack of shading or shadow round/under the lips so the lips look as though it a 'cutout' stucked on.  Also that outline is a bit too dark near where the corner of the mouth is and I need to shade on some of the white/black stripes to bring out the form <<<<paying attention to the entire shape of the zebra's head, as well as the body.
I hope you understand, if the medium was in pencil it would have been easier because a darker line/shade will come forward in perspective.  This is where my learnt and tedious lessons of drawing a sphere (head) + cylinder (the body) come in.  Here, my medium is in oil and I am using colour to create that perspective, very subtle colours because the subject matter = zebras is limited.  It depends on one's style of course, you can just use plain black and white but the finished piece will be very 2Dimensional/flat.

I hope this helps you to understand some of the art techniques.   I worked my piece off this image but have changed the background colour to make it 'Arty' for hanging on a wall.  The image is quite flat.     Lily

Another close- up.

You really have to look closely at every square inch of my paintings to work out the subtle shades, eg - the tiny streaks of subtle blues/ emerald green/ purples etc on where the black stripes becomes white and within the black stripes.  Oh dear, hope I am not boring anyone again, I miss teaching very much.          Lily

Lily, thank you a lot!

Your works are very nice and I appreciate a lot too the way you describe your painting. It also shows how seriously you do it and how it is not simple at all.

From my point of view you are one of the best CF on sharing what we do with all the other. I find your message enjoiable. Thank you again.

And, if your aim was to not be "photographic" I like to say that you succeeded as for me these zebras are a splendid "looking painting" painting.

Ciao
