I use special card to work on although you can use paper but I haven't yet tried my art using it.
The wax I use are little squares which heat up nice and smooth on the iron. I have used crayons but they don't melt evenly, crayons seems to leave gaps in the wax.
The iron is a special one as most domestic irons have holes on the base so they are not suitable, the iron has to have a flat base, a small travel iron is what I started out using but I decided I would have the real thing as it also can be used as a little hotplate.
Take a look at this site for more info on the materials.
