Happy birthday, Italian Republic!

Today is our most important national holiday, it's the Italian Republic birthday.

On 1946, the 2nd of June, the Italians were called to choose between monarchy and Republic and they chose Republic. They also elected the Constituting Assembly which would have written our new Constitution.

It was the first time after twenty years of fascism that the people was called to free elections and was the first time women voted.

As you see there are really a lot of things to be celebrated.

In vittorio emanuele III Italy had the werst king that is conceivable. A King may have many not very good qualities and still remains a King but one thing he absolutely cannot be, he can't be a coward!

vittorio emanuele III was a coward with the fascism, giving Italy to mussolini and, werst of the werst, he was a coward when, on 1943 the 8th of September, he and all his family run away as mouses to be protected by the USA and their allieds, leaving threee quarters of Italy in the hand of the nazist. he was the chief of the Italian Army and he left hundreds of thousands of soldiers without orders, without knowing what was happening. The nazist massacred a lot of them and many were deported to Aushwitz and to other nazist camps.

So, we today celebrated our Republic. There are many ceremonies and the Quirinale's (our President's residence) gardens will be open to all the people that want to visit them.

Here a beautiful photo of that day, with a young lady in front of the most important Italian newspaer with thw title "Italian Republic is born"

( the use of small letters were normally they have to be capitals is not a mistake, capital letters must be deserved )

Ciao, Sandro

And before and during WW2, I thought alot of Italians were fascist ( I know not all ).

Yes Jaided, savoia family is still existing, they call themselves prince, duke, and so on ...

The Republican Constitution forbade to the male descendants of vittorio emanuele III to come to Italy but three-four years ago our Parliament decided that there was no more danger to let them to come and so the prohibition was cancelled. I was and I'm contrary to that but I have to accept what the Parliament have decided. They come to visit and they felt as the majority of Italians don't like them. They live in Switzerland and there they have their businness, they come to Italy only sometimes.
Speaking about savoia with friends of mine they told to me that my intransigence (that is the same of many) is exagerate. I replied that a Prince is so only because son or grandson of a King, his right comes from his ancestors. vittorio emanuele III lost the rigth to be a King so his descendants do not have it. It's too easy to keep only the good, is'nt it? I say that they should have to admit that but  instead we only asked that they recognize the Republic and the President of the Republic. They did and so they are free to come to Italy.

If I was one of them I'll change my surname because of the shame.

Dear Jaided, I'll tell of fascists in another time, now I have to go.

Ciao, Sandro

It would make sense, that one of royal decent, change their sir name, so to travel to the country, their family, for many years, did rule. Especially if the incredible power of it's ppl, finally expressed to them, that they were no longer comfortable, with them in power.

I take it Sandro, the way this family or royals ruled, or wielded their power, put them in a position, which the ppl of Italy, very much disrespected them. If so, please tell us what they did, that the ppl, disfavoured so much.

Well all royals continue to keep their royal names and titles even after being deposed. That has happened numerous times. Just look at the Czar's family....their family ( which was huge and also related to the royals in England ) continued with their titles.

I have read a bit about the royals from Italy. I knew they were in Switzerland and also knew they were allowed back into Italy. I have read about the King, his wife and their son....if I am not mistaken. I find it all very interesting. :-)

And no, I do not think they are ashamed of anything really.

We got rid of our Royalty in the 17thC when Charles 1 was beheaded .Then we went & invited them back again! On the whole our Royal Family are OK, they do good works, open old people's homes, bring in the tourists, etc.On the down side we have to pay for them, they ligitamize class heirarchy, have the papers full of their tedious goings-on & put up with Prince Charles blethering on about modern architecture.

I have heard as of late, that Charles, wishes to no longer use the Helicopter for transportation, and instead use a vehicle that is a "hybrid" so to try to save some of the incredible amount of oil used daily in Britain. I have to take my hat off to him. Do you agree?
