I'm fairly new to all this internet stuff but was just wandering 2 things.  Does being online make you more honest?

Does stripping away all the extraneous stuff like what your job is, your age your appearance etc mean you're free to say whatever you want without having to deal with peoples expectations about the way they think you would be?

I like to think of myself as honest, but I know different facets of my personality are brought out by different situations - a person who met me in a job interview would get a different impression of me than my mates down the pub.  I tend to get my tone from the people/situation at the time.

Have any of you been tempted to go all out and try a whole personna overhaul on yourself?

It's a super topic.  I think I can speak fairly definitively when I say that, upon joining this site, I demanded to be allowed to show myself as totally non-Human [i.e. - the real me].

Those who found this hard to accept either stayed closed-minded or changed their minds, as in any situation.
Now, everyone here - especially the regular posters - Iced, Ocker, smile, L.L., Candy Girl, etc. - rarely forget[s] to take my feline status as The Way It Is.

HOWEVER - going onto your original question - who I am personality-wise comes through very strongly.  My beliefs, insecurities, strengths, idiosyncracies [there's a whole file on them, next to the chatroom], etc. are very visible, so if you want to [and I don't want you to] say the C.F.'ers know me "as a person", then the answer's "Yes, they do".

Do they think I hide anything?  I dunno, but the only thing I really hide is that which I've hidden since coming online in 1997 anyway - my "Humanity".
I can be just as, if not more, "Human" as the felid vampire that I am, than as a "real" Human.

Does that help?

Nice reply Stripey, we loves ya just the way you are  don't ever change !

I have never tried to be anyone else online, I can't see the point in it.  I think that those who do must have to have a huge memory, if they are talking or posting messages to loads of different people.  How do they remember who they were when they spoke to them and what had they said?  Unless they write it all down, what a boring life they must lead lol, just my opinion.

Trust a Cat to strip off all the peripheral rubbish:

"What do you mean 'fetch your stick'? Fetch your own bloody stick and get me my dinner whilst your at it!" In other words  - don't bother trying to make me into something I'm not, I'm just me and I'll do what I want when I want to do it. Fantastic

I love that you have a freedom here that is so under-estimated in the real world.

I like what your saying about it being you distilled to your purest form 'Essence of Earth Kryygre'

That's what your getting from me.  O.k. with a few teensy embellishments - not because I have anything to hide, I'm just eternally silly  !

From a thouroughly chastened Naff.

From reading some of the replies I think I must have given the wrong impression.  I certainly didn't want to encourage people to lie for bad purposes.  My newness to this & my profound optimism in (most of) the human race made me forgot that there are some very nasty people out there who will make up a personna for their own unpleasant motives.

I was bullied was I was young by a group of kids who thought it extremely funny to pretend to be my friend and then use every oppurtunity to hurt & humiliate me.  It knocked my already low confidence & made me draw into myself fo quite a long time.  I WOULD NEVER WANT TO ENCOURAGE THIS.

I had the best of intentions  - I wanted to create a tiny slice of cyberspace for people to go a little crazy and have a laugh - but reading back my posting has made me realize that it does kind of encourage the other.

I have a tendancy to get over excited & not think things through properley. i won't delete this to remind me to think a bit more in future but please treat each other with the respect Pieman has so rightly said we all deserve.  And if you want to make up something totally silly just for fun I have another posting on here

Sincere apologies, Naff

Well, first of all, I feel I must express that, upon my first visits online, I began to realize, that some were not who they said they were. Guess they couldn't keep their facts staight

Knowing how honest I have been throughout my life, just did not feel comfortable, in creating another personna, to be someone else nope. That's not in my character, other than in front of a camera, or a wishing physical audience, and that was many years ago.

Online, I want to know, that the individual, "is" the  individual that I am communicating with, not just some insecure dork, that is afraid to introduce the person within himself screaming to get out.

Then there are those that love, to take advantage of others, using a different personna other than the true self, and make ppl believe that they are someone else. Some do it just for kicks or a rush, which I find, very immature, and then there are the ones, that use it in much uglier reasons, but we wont go there right now.

I learned as a very young man, "honesty is the best policy."
