I don't know what happened the other night but most problems getting into Chat are as a result of a corrupt chat download tool. Go into Windows/ Downloads and delete the chat icon. Go back to the chatroom and try chat again. A new chat download/icon will automatically be installed (please forgive the techy terms)

Many problems accessing sites are due to corrupt cookies. Make a habit of deleting downloaded cookies regularly. This will not harm your comp although you may find you have to log on again to certain programs that you have asked to log on automatically. Cookies are downloaded every time you access a web page, supposedly to help the page download quicker next time but they also let the web site know what adverts you are likely to have read! Many sites insist you accept them in order to view the site but disabling accepting Cookies can cause more hassle than accepting them - they do no real harm providing you delete them regularly and don't let your comp get clogged with them.

It's a good idea to delete all Windows Temp files occasionally as well. Again, this will not harm your comp. The temp files are little snippets of programs which install on your comp when you download something from the Net or from discs. Again, they will re-install next time you use the program (don't ask me why they are there in the first place but they can waste a lot of space and slow your comp down).

Further to the above. I have had 3 computers now - running Windows 98, Windows ME and now XP and apart from the odd freeze I have never had any serious problems. I sometimes wonder what these people get up to who end up losing their entire system and have to re-install everything. My first policy is - if you don't know what it is - leave it alone and don't fiddle! My second policy is - keep your comp as clean and tidy as possible. Delete old stuff you never use any more and don't overload with pictures and audio. The less rubbish you have hanging around doing nothing on your comp the better and quicker it will work.

And further to the above further - when you buy a comp they are normally set up to maximum performance by the factory. Don't be persuaded by computer barrack room lawyers to alter this that and the other - it will make little or no difference and is more likely to cause problems

Rolo many thanks, I was trying to remember the other day where the icon was to delete. To summarise :
Go to Windows      click
Windows Downloads.........click
Chat icon.........delete
Clear Cache
Clear temporay files
Go back to chat, it should promt you to download chat , do so. all should be well.

As to your other comments I AGREE, if it ain't broke don't fix it .

Well mine went toes up bigtime because I tried to add Access to Office 97 with a service pack - only Access was from an earlier version I discovered. Got a registry corruption and reinstalled Windows and Office after deleting both, only to find I now have my system files on drive D instead of C!
Ho hum, at least its working and much better than before I tried to add Access.

This pc has hung after a couple of hours, or sooner, or later, ever since I got it. Still no idea what causes it - I have reinstalled and checked memory and updated drivers and swapped cards round and all sorts, but to no avail. I suspect an intermittent hardware fault but I have never been able to pin it down. It seems worse on graphics intensive stuff so it may be a clogged cache somewhere.

Perhaps I have just been lucky so far. Not being very computer literate I am very nervous of touching anything I don't understand. I am also very wary of downloading programs from the Internet and prefer to wait until I can find it on a cover disc freebie - most of which I have found to be ok and they install instantly rather than taking hours, although one or two things have caused freezes etc. If they do, I just delete them and chuck the disc away - what you haven't had you don't miss!

I stopped using Worlds because it kept freezing my comp and became a bit of a pain - sorry Ock - lol.

I am sure there are lots of things my computer could do which I haven't discovered yet, or could do with a few extra downloads, but as long as it does what I want it to do at the moment, I'm happy.

THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER TO GETING INTO CHAT PROBLEMS

This is the solution CLF recomends to the GETTING INTO CHAT PROBLEM  . It worked for me !
Sadly Carrott's comp is on it's last legs at the moment, or is that Carrotts himself  . Not I hasten to add caused by using this solution LOL.

first go to tools menu at the top of the screen, whilst on an internet page.

scroll down to and click on internet options

left click on 'settings' button

then 'view files'

go to edit menu, and then scroll to and click on the 'select all' option

this will highlight all files, including cookies. Right click on any of the highlighted file, and select delete.

then close that window, and click on the 'objects' button

seek out the file, 'msn chat control x.x'

right click on that, and scroll to and select 'remove'

close that window,

next, click ok, until it returns to the internet page.

reboot computer, and hopefully people will then be prompted to download the latest chat programme.

Re. message 8.
Having cleared out some cookies and completely buggering up chat last night  , I had great difficulties getting it back even by following the instructions in 8. Frustrated beyond belief and convinced I would have to get a man in , I gave up.
This morning I had another go, first going to the MSN Home Page, clicking People & Chat, and picked a chat room there. I got the prompt to down load chat again, did so , waited for the smiley face, it appeared and I got into a chat room there.
I then tried chat in here, was prompted to wait for chat software again, waited and by jingo it worked !
So if you follow the instructions in 8 and damm all happens, try this as well.

In reply to your message Ginger Nut about your PC hanging after a couple of hours. One hardware problem that I have seen cause this sort of problem is if the Fan on the processor chip is not working or going slow. Most processors now have a fan monuted on them. These processor fans do wear out and slow down. The Chip then gets too hot and problems occur.

Thats just one idea. Could be many things .
