Iced gem asked about worlds and how to make it run better etc. So I decided in the end to post some sugestions in here then others may find it helpful too.
These sugestions are ideas that I have been told about by other worlds members and hosts and are not all necessarily reccomended by worlds.com however I have used these ideas myself and have never had a problem with them.
All of these are tips for getting worlds to start up and run more quickly.
Before you make any alterations to a file please back it up. (Esp the worlds.ini file)
To get going sooner
1. After starting up worlds when the the sign in screen appears press cancel and move to a less populated area than GZ before signing on. You should then be able to move about much sooner.
To make it load faster
2. Sometimes worlds seems to get stuck on the loading screen when starting.
If it consistantly gets stuck at the same place then you may need to clear out the cachedir folder. Remember though after doing this it will take much longer to load the first time you load worlds after clearing it.
Also as last resort if it still seems to get stuck (I have only had to do this once in 18 months) you can delete the tables.dat file which is in the tables folder (in the worldsplayer folder) A new tables.dat will be created, but keep a copy of the one you delete just in case.
A friend of mine once had the situation where she could not save any Av's or worldsmarks. Again after much headscratching deleting the tables.dat cured the problem.
Also another way to get it past the loading screen faster is to press the offline button on that screen but before it gets to 25%. (you have to be reall quick). It then seems to be less likely to get stuck. But read on. This method seemed to work for me until I discovered that if you have started it like this then you cant then get to any streaming worlds. It took me quite a while to realise that it was only when i'd started it in this way that i couldnt get to any streaming world.
Streaming Av textures.
Nowadays all of the textures on the av's are streamed from the worlds servers. This is another reason why it takes ages to load in a busy area, esp if ypou have a dial up connection.
A way round this (and this is what I do) is to have all the Av files on your hard disk.
You can download them form this site. (Bad Dude's) Although it was down last time I looked, but is sure to be back.
The files you download from that site need to be extracted into the avatars folder (which is in the worldsplayer folder) - Not the avatar gallery.
Youi then need to modify the worlds.ini file by adding the line UseNetworkAvatars=0 to the to gamma section.
Then when worlds loads it will look on your hard disk for the av textures and will load faster.
The drawback is that when new textures for av's are released you wont have them.
Re installing worlds
If you need to re install worlds at any time be sure to save these files first.
worlds.ini. It contains your list of friends amongst other things. You could then get them from here to put into the newly installed worlds.ini
Gamma.avatars This contains all your saved av's
Gamma.worldsmarks This contains all your saved worldmarks.
Both these files can be but back into your worldsplayer folder after you have re installed worlds and will give you back what you had before.
Well thats some of the ideas I've collected. If anyone knows anymore then please post them in this thread.
