This is just the basis to my story, but it is neither entirely true -(because the character writing is female and I am not)- and nor is it the full version of it

I remember my days in school. Kids can be more evil than their adult counterparts dare to be. Adults in all their brutality are kittens compared the mind taring torture the children inflict on each other. I am one who has endured both sides of the stick. Perhaps on my second run round the bases I should have found petty and learned my lessons. However... I was still a child, and my mind was still recovering and far from unforgiving.

-----

I was barely 15 growing up in California, America. I was best friends with the most popular girl in my year... At the time I thought the school, but my world only revolved around the girls of my year. We sat at the popular table; demanding the geeks, freaks, losers and all others to sit elsewhere. We commented on their hair, calling it nasty when we merely wished we thought of having the style first... Calling them lard ass when we were only deterring attention from our own backsides which, we hoped was to the liking of the boys.
It turned out a boy I liked was also liked by my best friend, and she had asked me to put in good words for her. In other words, I was supposed to drop a hint so big he couldn't doubt it's meaning - even though he is a guy, it was a possible achievement. Unfortunately it backfired... He took the hint the way he was supposed to, but left me with more than a hint. He asked me out.
Naturally I declined, I couldn't break the unwritten girls code all children endure. Whether male or female a code exists that shall not be broken. Not by kids anyway. Adults break it all the time, but children live by it with more vigilance than a Christian by the ten commandments.
My friend on the other hand, she didn't take kindly at all. A mutual friend, or so I thought, had told her I had been flirting with him. Somehow it got out that I said yes to going out with him, which he blamed me for. Despite the fact I hadn't even told anyone he had asked me.
My best friend was Gina. The Mutual friend, Sarah... and the boy, Jake.

Over the next few months I endured it all. I wasn't allowed on my usual table before I knew what I had done wrong. I was shunned without knowing why. Rumors spread like wildfire in a dried barn full of hay bails and mental/verbal abuse was only just beginning. I was cornered in toilets, untroubled hidden in my stall - except for the fact they knew I was there and let me overhear their words. You can guess the intentions there. I was emailed at home to sites made simply to abuse me. My friends were now my bullies and I was their only target. Even Jake shunned me for what got passed around.

I did everything short of self harming. I cut my hair, which went drastically wrong and made me look foolish. I attempted fixing the problems which always set me up for another fall, such as covering for my former best friend and being invited to a party ... which didn't exist of course.
I'd had it, I was beat. I wanted a new school and a new life, but my "mother" decided its better to fight the problem than run away. Which just made things worse at first and I wanted to die. Literally I almost turned to self harming.

Just as I thought my life was now eternally doomed, my savior came. Funny how that happens isn't it?

A new boy started the school, he was due to the following Monday anyway. I had been locking myself in my room and refusing to go to school, but on the Saturday I was sat on my porch talking to my dad on the phone. He lived away and I was going to spend the following summer away with him and his fiancé. I was going to try and convince him to let me move in with him and change schools... Thats when I met him.
James.
I am 37 now, and that was just a high school thing, but he will always be the angel that saved me.

James was new in town and seen me on the phone. He came over and waited for my attention. I was simply ignoring his presence though. When I hung up I turned to go inside without paying him any notice, but when he spoke, I changed my mind for a reason still don't know.
I told him what was happening to me at school, and the more I spoke to him the more I realized how charming and sweet he was. It was a good hour before I even noticed he was also "Hott" ... He gave me the usual Bull-crap words of comfort... But when he told me he was about to join my school, I almost died. I knew as of Monday he would no longer want my company. In fact, he would probably tell everyone what I said which would only get him popular quicker. Popularity was a given anyway, due to his looks.
I took the weekend to enjoy his company, I knew it was short lived but I needed it. I needed someone to laugh with... Someone to treat me as me for one weekend.
After school on the Monday, he knocked on. I refused to go to the door, so he climbed to my window and started talking to it. I couldn't make out his words at first so I moved closer. I got half sentences but it was mostly incoherent so I opened the window to listen to whatever abuse he had for me.
"Why weren't you at school? I was looking forward to sitting with you at dinner"

... Turned out he was offered to sit with the popular girls, shunned by the guys at first until they learned he was good at basketball. He refused the popular table. "How could it be the popular table if the most beautiful girl in the school didn't sit there?" he said... Yes, it made me smile.
I didn't go to school the next day either, and again he came round and filled me in. Today the girls were mean to him because of the day before, but he smiled at them all and said little. Except that he doesn't care what they have to say, only one girls words mattered. Gina then spoke to him, she had suddenly got over Jake and wanted James' attention. He humored her, and then when she made move he put a hand to her mouth and pushed her away saying: "Ew no, your ugly" ... Suddenly Gina's friends were laughing. To which James turned to Sarah and said: "You on the other hand are more my type"
Sarah being the two faced cow she was, lapped it up. The crowd suddenly turned on Gina and followed Sarah. For all of 3 minutes. James playing their games stopped in the middle of the crowded cafeteria and shouted "Ewwwwwww" with more volume than necessary, "You have a mustache" he called pointing at Sarah's upper lip. Sarah ran away crying and the school laughed. James then walked and sat by himself and ate in peace.
Day 3 I looked forward to James' daily visit after school... wondering what antics he got up to today. The girls had left him alone, but the guys fund him hilarious. They all wanted to know which girl had his attention so much that he would blow out both Gina and Sarah. He had refused to tell saying: "If she agrees to go out with me, which I hope she will... Then you will all find out."
As he said that sentence I opened my mouth in...I don't know... the emotions I can't explain but I wanted to say yes... yet I couldn't believe my luck. Surely this was just another set up by Sarah and Gina?
"Is that your way of asking me out?"
- "It is if you say yes"

I was hooked. I couldn't risk falling for this guy ... I wouldn't be able to handle a practical joke this big. "I will come in school tomorrow. You can prove how much you want to get with me there. If you have proved it by Friday then I will say yes."
- "Haven't I proved it already?"
"You have, but I have been through a lot lately, and I couldn't take any more hurt right now."

The next day I went in as promised. James was quick to my side as I walked through the doors. He linked me, and I let him. He made me laugh and allowed me to ignore the looks of the girls. "Imagine they are jealous and want to be you. All you have to do, is show them you're glad you're not them." And that's exactly what I did.
That dinner break he asked me out in front of the school. I was red as a beetroot and dieing to say yes.
"Not that easy... If you want me you will have to try harder."
- "Looks like what Gina said isn't true after all. She was much easier than you. Maybe it's her that's the slut."
Ouch! Gina was the one to run away crying this time. Jake wasn't as amused though. He tried to step up to James, but was quickly shot down. "Just because you believed Gina over Jess... Doesn't mean I have to be nice to her. If you really liked Jess when you asked her out, you would have asked for her side of the story. Instead you add to her suffering and act like she is to blame. If you want to be the hero... help those that need it and not the suck up bitches you chase like the horny mongrel you are."
James looked so angry and scary as he voiced his opinion to Jake, his only reply was to chase after Gina in the exact way he had just described. "Woof Woof... Woof" James called after him, "Make sure you get a good sniff before you lick anything!"
I put my hand on James' shoulder and he turned to me, "Yes."
- "You'll get with me?" He asked with what looked like shock on his face.
"Yes." I replied and kissed him in front of everyone.
Some people cheered, some wit-wooed... Seven gave me dagger looks.
The popular table was mine again. Jake was shunned for a while, but slowly weasled back in. Gina transfered and Sarah joined the freaks, due to lack of brain mass to join the geeks.
I soon after moved tables myself and sat with the people who were happy being their normal selves. James seemed to like me more for it. Me and James split after our first year at different Universities, but we had no regrets. We both wanted to explore and have fun...
... We lost touch somewhere down the line, but last I heard he was good and looking at promotion. I am happy for him. I too am doing well. But maybe I should have been nicer to Sarah after the event. She died at 17 by a drug overdose. The school acted like they had liked her... missed her... some even milked it for time off school and others actually cried. I was still full of spite though, the only tears she got from me were happy ones.

Angels come when we most need them to show us the way.
Some for a moment, some for a day, some for a short while and some for a lifetime..
I have been blessed with a few of my own.

And for some, I have been one at times.
