Microsoft to ditch MSN Groups?

An e-mail snafu has led to the leak of Microsoft's decision to shutter its MSN Groups service, according to LiveSide.net. It's not a surprise, as MSN Groups was one of the last vestiges of Microsoft's Web services strategy pre-Windows Live.

MSN Groups will be closing on February 21, 2009. It'll be replaced with a new service, Windows Live Groups, which debuts on November 17.

Here's the catch: The LiveSide post indicates MSN Groups will not be migrating to Windows Live Groups; the new Windows Live service will be different enough so that the transition wouldn't be a clean one. Instead, the LiveSide post says that existing MSN Groups will transition to community site Multiply--in other words, Multiply is effectively acquiring MSN Groups from Microsoft.

Representatives from Multiply, which said earlier this month that it has reached 10 million registered users, confirmed the news. Microsoft representatives released a longer statement: "It is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply. We understand the importance of keeping your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.

HM I saw this and it appears to be real this time.
Feb seems to be the end of what we now know.

We will have to wait and see what Classic wants to to do.

Good God!

Figures-  first the chat rooms now the whole group.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.  BOO HOOO

This Multiply org is more like My Space where you get personal pages.  I think you can still have groups on Yahoo.   They might be friendlier too!

Any thoughts anyone?

This is so sad.  I like msn groups.  I like the way the boards are laid out, the format or whatever it's called.  I like this group.  I'll miss everybody.

((((((((((((((((((((Huggsssss Everyone))))))))))))))))

Wow that is bad news.  A real shame for sure.  I love the way these groups are set up too they are easy to navigate even for beginner's and the not so teckyies like me.

I popped in the other night and saw this message I clicked on the link to the "multiply" to check it out, signed up and ya it is sooo much like myspace I don't see anything that resembles a message board like these other than you can Post......but then it's not in a discussion form or not in topics so that would really suck eh?...hmmmmm

Now the only benefit is that if we "migrate to Multiply" they say our material will be saved???  hmmmmm I don't see it the way the new forum is set up.

Sooooo......... ya we need to see what else is out there, Ya NANA Yahoo still has groups...........so that is one option, we open our group and copy/paste all the material we want from here to Yahoo, we have until February to do so.

or we can opt to "migrate" one we see what that means, the message says we should receive a 'notice' this week with instructions, etc.  .......... but we need to see if that means everything is transferred 'immediately.......or sometime between deciding to migrate anf the February deadline because if it's a 'right away thing' we Would Not choose to Migrate because we would need the time to copy/paste to a new Group such as Yahoo....right........hmmmmmm.

So how about we check out the net and see if we can find a site that is as 'close as possible' to what we have here to open up a new site?

Would it be a good idea after we Find and Set up a new site to go ahead and "migrate to Multiply as well"......just in case, a way to save our material, member list, etc.?............hmmmmmmmmm and possibly be helpful in helping other's find us.???

well I think that the Highest Priority is to ensure that everyone know's that we are all going to Stick Togeather wherever we have to move and that Togeather we will All take part in finding and figuring out how to get a New Start in another Forum, one that will make the transition as easy as possible for All and ensure that we retain our philosophy  of our present site.

All Suggestions Welcome, if anyone finds another site that they feel will serve our purpose please leave a link and short explanation of it for us here on this thread and we can all check it out.

I'll be checking in as much as I can.  Talk to you soon.  Good Luck!

We need more information on the layout of Multipy.  Yes I think we should think about doing both -go with multipy and somewhere else for now.  We can always close one or the other when we find out which one works better.

I'll look around too and see what is out there,  I'm sure we can find a fun place to hang out in!

Blessings
