Like the Big Three automakers, states should first take advantage of the downturn to do some needed cost cutting and restructuring. State employee numbers, pensions, and health-insurance premium sharing �?as well as duplicate and ineffective agencies and programs �?should be high on the hit list.

I hope the Dems can embrace some of the ideas in that article. If there was ever a time to depart from the usual tax-and-spend mentality, this would be it.
I'm unclear on why "deflation" is worse than "inflation", or maybe I just don't understand the context here? The more expensive things are (from inflation), the less people can afford to buy. No?
