I have an active interest in scottish football and particularly the OF title race, but to be honest the coverage in the press south of the border of scottish football isn't the best.  It seems to me a little odd that Rangers are now once again very much out of that title race; I say that for two reasons.

Firstly, Gordon Strachan.  The Celtic fans on here have never seemed to warm to him particularly.  I find the bloke very amusing but he never really pulled up many trees managing in England and for his Celtic team to be so far ahead of Rangers and on the cusp of his 4th successive title is a surprise to the interested outsider.

Secondly, in light of Rangers achievements last season.  It is clear that progress in the cups hampered Rangers last season and I am sure no Rangers fan would have swapped the SPL title for a UEFA Cup final.  You beat some very excellent sides en route to Manchester, not least Fiorentina who are currently in the top 4 of Serie A.

Is it fair to say that this isn't exactly a vintage Celtic side?  I saw Rangers beat St Mirren last month but it seemed to me a very nervous stadium when Rangers didn't kill off the opposition who ultimately gave themselves a sniff of snatching a result in the closing stages.  Do the Rangers fans not trust their team?  Their team which was very close to a remarkable quadruple last season?  Where has it fallen apart this time?

This is a huge topic. Where do we start ?

There are numerous factors. Firstly, we have a manager who is now winding down to retirement in my opinion. He came back full of enthusiasm, and we got the expected reaction in terms of the second half of the PLG half-season and then last season which will live in my memory forever. But in my opinion he should have gone out on that high, even though we lost the UEFA Cup Final and the SPL. He was never going to repeat the feat of taking every competition to the final day.

Now he appears to be trying to hand the reins over to Ally McCoist, and today when we needed our General leading from the front, Smith spent all but the final five minutes of the game in the stand. Celtic, meanwhile, had Strachan yelling instructions from the touchline from start to finish. Walter appears to have lost his appetite, and that is symptomatic in the way he appears unable to motivate the team to start well in certain games, notably away from home when teams are generally in your face early on.

Moving on to the money side of things, we have a chairman who has also lost motivation and is looking to sell up. Except at this time of financial uncertainty nobody is wanting to buy, particularly when Murray will want back the £50m he transferred from his other companies to pay off the debt he built up, spending money we didn't have. So we will continue to sell our prize assets when they are worth a bob or two, Bougherra and Mendes could very well be sold in January.

You are right, this isn't a vintage Celtic side. They are decent, but far from great. The Champions League results this season showed that. But they are mentally strong, and they have good men in the changing room. Say what you like about Neil Lennon, but Celtic's resurgance last season coincided with his arrival and he really knows how to get a "we shall not be moved" attitude in the changing room. Can Ally McCoist do the same at Ibrox ? The jury is very much out on that one.

Do the Rangers fans not trust their team ? I wouldn't say we do particularly, to be honest. The make-up of the majority of the match-attending Rangers support were brought up on a diet of 9-in-a-row, and a group of players like Goram, Gough, Brown, McCall, McCoist who would sweat blood for the jersey. When those players left they were replaced by big-money quality foreigners like Klos, van Bronckhorst, Tugay, Albertz, Numan, Amoruso

Nowadays, due to the downsizing of the club financially, the quality of player is nowhere near as good as back then, but that's a result of the financial downsizing. So there is nowhere near as much confidence in the team as there was back in the previous Smith and Advocaat eras. I remember going to The Piggery in 1999 to win the league, and I don't think I've ever seen a set of fans with more belief in their side than the Rangers fans had that day. There was just no debate about it, Rangers were winnning that day, and no other outcome was even considered. That confidence spread to the pitch, and Rangers won 3-0 as Celtic completely self-destructed.

How does it turn around ? Well, we're clinging to the truth that Celtic aren't particularly good either at the moment, and it only takes a little bit of investment in a few quality players to turn it around. Last season proved that, before the establishment did everything in their power to hinder our attempts to make history. But when we're being told in September that we wouldn't be spending a penny in January, it doesn't fill you with great optimism that it's going to turn around this season.

Interesting thread and poll on Follow Follow this morning :-

Walter Smith's league record since 1995 (when Celtic got their act together under Tommy Burns), excluding games against Celtic :-

Season 1995-96 - Rangers 81 points, Celtic 80 points
Season 1996-97 - Rangers 68 points, Celtic 75 points
Season 1997-98 - Rangers 65 points, Celtic 70 points
Season 2007-08 - Rangers 80 points, Celtic 83 points
Season 2008-09 so far - Rangers 40 points, Celtic 47 points

It confirms to me that Walter has lost his ability to motivate Rangers to perform week in week out against the lesser teams in the SPL, and we are more likely to drop silly points than Celtic are.

The thread also contains a poll on whether Walter should go or not. Currently it stands at 90.41% yes, 9,59% no.
