What is it like to own a DYH Amazon I am thinking about getting one? I am experienced with parrots small and medium. How do ther differ in comparision to an eclectus? What is a typical day living with an amazon? What are there charaistics like?
any info would be helpful. I like to get my facts before purchasing, so I know what I am getting into.

Thanks,
Pinkstar

I have had both. Actually I have had three double yellow heads, two males and a female. And I now have an eleven year old female eclectus.
The male DYH's were loud, good talkers and funny as all get out. One talked a blue streak and was pretty calm til he hit maturity at age three. Then he became a terror. That stinker would jump off his cage to come after me.

The other male was only handleable by a two year old girl. Her daddy had leukemia and they were told to get all animals out of the house or their doctor's care would stop. Of course they had to sell him. The young man died within a couple of months. Anyway, I could never handle him due to his fear of all adults. He was a beauty, though.

My female DYH, was even more beautiful. Her yellow extended all the way down onto her shoulders. My cousin has her now. She was a good natured bird but never seemed comfortable with me. She is calm and happy with my cousin and even goes on camping trips with them in a motor home.

My eclectus has been with me since she was 9 weeks old, handfed for a year, because we both loved that time together. She has been very calm except when in hormone mood. She can bite like a razor blade. I use a stick to pick her up for about a month when she is in her cranky mood. She's severely plucked, completely naked on her body, and her wings and tail are shredded. She's healthy now and happy, just likes to yank those feathers out. She was critically ill for a couple of years when she was very young. She's been naked for at least 7 years, maybe longer.

I think the ekkies are lots easier but we have amazon people here who think theirs are wonderful.
They certainly are gorgeous and usually are good talkers.

I've had quite a few in my years and just now have three.. one being a baby that gets on the nerves of the others as he is fiesty..... plays like a Goffin all hyper and full of himself..

I had all the amazons in here today with me due to water leaking in their room and he has been so funny all day long... Loves to sing opera, not beyond a few rap tunes and has several voices, imitating every last one of the Too's and the CAG...

Depending on the time of the year, the others are fickle....the greaded hormones....

I have a 19 year old DYH, and I love her to pieces.  She is the funniest of all my 5 birds.  A real clown.  But she's also the noisest of the 5, and now that hormone season is here, she's really wound up.  Also, she's always been in love with my hubby, and he can do all kinds of things to her.....like rub his nose in her chest feathers.  If I did that, I wouldn't have a nose.  But I wouldn't trade her for the world.

My Cuco is such a lovey bird - I can do anything to him - and he will come put his head down by my hand so I will "comb" his hair. He can be bossy with people he doesn't know, and will tolerate my daughters....definitely a mama's boy! ;)
Noise factor - second only to my U2 - but he's quiet most of the day, so I won't complain.

Pinkstar    I think Ekkies are so beautiful but did you read up on their different needs in food.  I don't own an Ekkie but their are some on here who do.  Just good to read up on their needs. :)
