I have noticed that my budgie is very quiet. He hardly ever makes a sound. He just sits there all day. He doesnt play with toys either. I have tried different kinds in his cage, but he just ignores them. Is this normal for budgies? thanks.

Heidi

Maybe someone can help if you'll share a bit more information.  How long has he lived with you?  Has he ever been a busy little bird?  If you just got him, has he been to the vet for a checkup yet?  Is he eating and drinking?
Most budgies are pretty busy birds.  Mine (that I used to have) bounced around the cage and played constantly.  Lots of chirping.  In fact, that's why I had them. The person who gave them to me couldn't sleep for budgies chirping.
Hope someone will have some ideas for you.
Annie

I have had him for well over 6 months. He has never made much noise or done much. Once in awhile he might quietly chirp at something he heard on the tv, but other than that he doesnt really make a sound. He eats and drinks just fine. When I try to hold him or put my hand in the cage at all he tries to get away. He's not very tame. He doesnt seem sluggish or anything when you are trying to touch him. He has good feathering and everything. He can fly good too, found that out today. Decided to give him a bigger cage and he got away from me. Took off through the house. Took awhile to find him, he was fast and hid from me. Do you think it might help if I got him a friend/mate or something? thanks.

get the bird to a vet now. parakeets are my cup of tee although i dont have any know. and this is not normal. they are not quiet birds
although it not unusual for them not to play with toys it is not normal for it to just sitt there
is it fethers fluffed up? is there a green or other color stain left on the bird when it poop? that be diahareea.
keep bird warm put vitamins in water
call the vet and get that bird in asp
parakeets are fragile bird and it not pretaining to you , let me say that , but for anyone never having a bird before please parakeets are fragile and for experienced bird people
i beleieve you bird is ill
please take to vet
the fact it quiet and just stands ther has me concerned.  take to vet

Oh I bet a mate would help immensly.  If he's not sick of course.  If you've had him for 6 months though and he hasn't changed, he's probably just bored.  Maybe he doesn't know how entertaining toys can be.  Maybe he doesn't know how entertaining YOU can be.  Have you been trying to tame him?  I had two budgies together that I never tamed and they were great little pets.  They'd chirp and play and preen each other.  I would open the cage door with a clip and let them fly around the house sometimes.  When evening came they would climb back in and I could shut the door.  It worked out great for me and I never had to worry about one being lonely when I wasn't home.  Good luck with him and let us know what  you decide.  Some cool treats might perk him up a little too, mine used to love dandelion greens.

His feathers are not puffed up or anything and his poop looks completely normal. Thanks for the help. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I will contact my vet as soon as I can. Thanks.

A single budgie is much more quiet than a "flock" of budgies. The more you have, the more noise you have. Try finding something with crowd noise on TV. Sports is ideal. I hate sports, but the budgies love it.
