It IS a tumor!  It's on the back of his neck and it's grown big enough to see.   I stopped giving him the meds yesterday, it's a pointless torture that won't help a tumor.  He has continued to become more and more depressed and sit's fluffed with his head tucked back and both feet on the perch.  I thought he was getting better when the swelling around his eyes was going down, but no.  My dad comes tonight, I've already talked to him.  I'll let you all know what he decideds to do.

I'm sorry, that did sound kind of bad.  When I had him at the vet the first time, she told me that if the medicine doesn't start making him feel better, to discontinue it.  I gave him 6 days of Baytril (in case of upper respitory) and 6 days of metacam for swelling.  Which is what she told me to give him, if he's continuing to feel bad, then disconinue.  However, if he seems to be feeling better, continue the Baytril 4 more days and the Metacam 1 more day.   He wasn't getting better, so I stopped the meds.  She said the only other thing that would cause his symptoms are a tumor.  Now the tumor is visible, on the back of his neck....she was right.  I called and left a message for her to tell her about it and see what she suggests.  I'm not sure if my dad will decide to take them home at this point, or leave them here longer.  I'm about a half hour closer to the avian vet.

My dad decided to go ahead and take Meanie home with him. He's hoping to make him more relaxed at his own home, where he's used to the smells and sounds.  Poor Meanie.  I talked to the vet and she doesn't need to see him again, she's sure it's a tumor....She was sure when she saw him it was a tumor, but the accident he had presented a glimmer of hope.  His non response to the medicine makes her sure that her first diagnosis was correct.  She said just make him as comfy as possible and if he shows any signs of pain, she can put him to sleep for us.   My poor dad is so upset.  He's so worried about Dodger now because we've all heard the stories about the 'other Budgie' dying of a broken heart shortly after the lost of a cage mate.

By the way, my avian vet is Dr. Jeanne Smith in Placerville, California.  She's in a few Bird Talk magazines and does a lot for the community and wild birds around here.  I'm sure some of you have probably heard of her.  She's giving a class in a few weeks on handfeeding wild baby birds for people who would like to be involved in rescuing.  I'm tempted, but I'm not going to do it.  I don't feel comfortable bringing wild birds into my house and maybe putting the health of my parrots at risk.  If I had an outside barn or shop I'd do it in a second!

im sorry to hear that . seems strange though for a tumar to grow that quickly. im even more shock that the vet does not want to try to remove it.
dont worry the other budgie will do fine it wont die of a broken heart. watch the bird for signs of pain
im very sorry

I'm so sorry to hear Meanie isn't doing well....
I agree - it is surprising for a tumor to grow that fast.  Did your vet say where the tumor is located and if it would be possible to remove it?

The tumor is on the back of his head...well actually INside his head, which is why she doesn't want to try to remove it.  It's already pressing nerves and making his eyes bulge out a little bit.  Too invasive for such a teeny tiny little guy.  He's happy to be home again and resting a lot.   I'm sure he's much more comfortable in his familiar surroundings.

Oh, such sad news, Tiva...but I agree that it's best for him to be home with all the love he can get.  It's best for him to be where he wants to be.
If I had it to do over again, I'd never have let my poor Beakboy stay at the veterinary hospital until the end....if I'd only have known...
