can anybody give me a website that shows how to properly trim a parakeets wings. I have had them trimmed a couple of times by a pet store. It doesnt look hard to do but am afraid of cutting wrong and causing wing to bleed. Thank you | | |

Hi jeepersmom I would ask someone to show you, next time your at the pet store ask if you can sit in while they do it, its something that you cant just look at a pic and be able to do, you have to be able to hold the bird right, cut the right feathers, watch for blood feathers, know how to pull a blood feather out if you do clip one. I work at a pet store where I have to clip feathers all the time, and I wont do my own birds, I dont want them to think of me as that person. Samm |

I once saw an online video of a lady trimming budgie wings. I have looked and looked since I saw your message and I can't find it again. Too bad. The danger in doing it yourself, if someone doesn't train you, besides accidentally clipping a blood feather, is that if we cut wrong it is possible to amputate part of the wing. Best bet is to ask the pet store to teach you. They can show you the proper angle and how short you can trim without doing harm. Annie |

Annie's right. Get someone to show you how. It's not hard, I wouldn't want to learn from a picture. I do wings and toenails, but not beaks. My OLD zon needs his beak done about every 6mo and I take him to the breeder I bought him from. |

Oh darn, Oh darn. those people are cutting too many feathers, in my opinion. I don't like it when the secondaries are cut and the birds side body shows. Too much!! Most don't need that many cut anyway. They'd drop like a rock instead of being able to glide safely to the floor. No trim is safe enough to take the birds out without being caged. Wind can give them lift very quickly even with a good trim. Annie-who is opinionated 'bout this stuff |
