Wart, Welcome to BB. I am so sorry about your parakeet. That's a long life together and I know how sad you must be. I can't advise you on what kind of bird to get since I don't know your lifestyle and how much noise you could tolerate. I have a Maximilian pionus who is super quiet, but have heard of a few who are really really loud. My cockatiel is usually very quiet except for a couple of times a year when he screams incessantly. I think from the reading I have done that lots of conures will be pretty loud. I had a Patagonian who was quite loud. There are conures, green cheeked and maroon bellied, who are supposed to be much quieter. My friend has a maroon bellied who is very quiet and talks a little. Tiny little bird, about the size of my tiel. Birds USA magazine has species specific articles every year to help with personality traits and info about many different species. Only published once a year and the new issue came out in Mar or April. Good luck in finding a new companion. Annie |

Tell us more about your lifestyle- are you a working person ? Retired & home a lot ? Want a very playful/ active bird or one that is more self-entertained and independant ? These types of things are all factors. I am a working person that has a quiet household. I have a green indian ringneck named Pookie. You can click on my nickname above and a box pops up and click on one of the 4 pictures that displays and that will take you to my photo album. (It works the same for anyone you have seen posting on here if you want to see if they have pics of their birds.) Pookie is not real active like an amazon or most conures, but she is not loud or demanding like some of those birds can be either. You will probably read that indian ringnecks are standoffish birds, but that is not completely true. They can entertain themselves independently, but the same bird can love a good neck scritching. Several folks on here have ringnecks and some of theirs are good talkers (some aren't- mine does not talk) and some are referred to as "velcro birds" (mine is at times). Ringnecks are "parakeets" but larger than the "budgie" variety. They are more like cockatiel size, with a very long elegant tail. Anyway, I have several good bird books and am on a break at work right now, so I can't check which book it is in for sure... but I think it is my "Birds for Dummies" book (you know, the bright yellow books, a whole series of "for Dummies" boks) sold in most pet stores where they list various types of birds and their sizes and some pro's/ con's to consider. Take your time in choosing your next bird buddy. I am sorry you lost your beloved parakeet. |

What birds are you interested in? If space and noise are not factors the choices are endless--and there are a lot of sweet ones! For us to make suggestions is a kind of unusual way to choose your bird. If I were to make a suggestion it would be --because you haven't indicated size--a senagal--not to big--fairly quiet--promoted in Bird Talk as a great apartment bird. They like to be only birds and reward you mightily when they are loved--they can also be stubborn and as a whole think they are much larger than they are. But the best bird for you is the one that picks you. So I would start looking around and see what it is. Katz |

Welcome to the group. So sorry to hear about your parkeet, you shared a long friendship together. How do you feel about getting another sun conure? If you've already had one you know how loud they are, the amount of time they are loud will depend on a lot of things, including how loud your home is. I have a (to me) very quiet sun conure. Yes, he can be loud, like now when he's molting... What sized bird were you looking for? I'll tell you the truth, I've heard so many positive things about indian ringneck parakeets from the members who are owned by them that I was saving my money to buy one. There are so many choices out there that it's mind boggling at times. Look around, read up on different birds and ask questions. I'll bet that any species you have questions about we will have a member who is owned by one. |

Hello, and Welcome! I'm sorry to hear about your grey cheek. I have a cousin of the grey cheek, a white wing. I just adore the brotogeris genus. I wish there were more of them around. Have you thought of another grey cheek? Gabby is my second white wing, and she is just as sweet and lovable as my first. It's hard to advise you on a choice without knowing more about your lifestyle and size or noise constraints. Are you ready for a big beak with big bites? Can you handle the noise of some conures? Ultimately, you have to do a lot of research and then decide. We're here if you need help wading through some of the info. Don't be afraid to ask questions. |

I myself would not listen to what other people say. if a sun or any other parrot is what you want, go for it. I have a sun and people tried to tell me they were loud. I am so glad that I got him.

I'm sorry to hear about your green-cheek but how fortunate that you were together for so many years. As far as choices, I can only echo what everyone else says. It's about you and what you want. I think Greys and 'Zons are wonderful (which is why I have 'em...or they have me!) But I adored my BC Conure. (Loud - yep....music to my ears.) So I guess it all depends on what you want and what your lifestyle will allow you. Take a trip to a Parrot Rescue. There are soooo many wee fids that need a good, permanent home. Sounds like you have the knowledge and the heart for a bird with baggage. |
