I just brought my keet to the vet.. came back with a 306.00 bill.. is this normal.  they said she had a fatty liver ?? she eats roudybush ever since i got her.  they did bloodwork, xray, etc.... im not sure birds are an inexpensive pet to keep .. does this sound like a normal bill ???

Sounds about like my bills at the vet. We have had some serious illnesses and it cost a bundle to get all the tests done and meds.  Then made many return visits to be sure we got her well.
I once took three birds in at one time.  Got outta there after writing a $1000 + check.
Nope they aren't an inexpensive pet.
Hope your budgie does well.
Annie

My average bird vet bill runs $275.00 for a sick call.  But part of that is my fault because I want every blood test imaginable run when I take my girls in.  di

When I had Rio to the vet so many times, I was standing at the counter next to a man who was complaining about the bill for his dog--I think it was about $70.  Hard to keep quiet, while I was writing out my check for $863.00  And there were a few more bills just like it before the month was finished.

Sounds normal to me when doing diagnostic labs, exrays etc. But, well bird check ups aren't bad and my average visit on a bird that has already had labs is about 130.00.
I have a Ringneck that ran into the 1000's with care for a broken leg. We went about a bajillion times though and he is doing great. I hid that bill.

Whew, I've been super lucky.  My avian only charged me $42 for that last visit with Meanie and the head injury.  My little English Budgie Shyster had Chlamydia before and it only cost about $50.  I guess so far I've just been lucky having birds ailed with obvious problems and she's been able to avoid the expensive labs.  She takes a little pooh sample and smears it onto her scope right there in the exam room/lab.  Sometimes she adds liquid to it and takes a better look.  She's awsome, her lab is in a building on her property so I go to her house for vet visits.

Hello-

Avian vet care is  often outrageously expensive.
But ALL vet care is expensive.
However, I say intelligent bird care is not expensive.
Making your own toys, shopping around for cage bargains and eating veggies YOURSELF that you can share with your flock keeps the "care" bill to a bare minimum.

As with any pet, there are people who just seem to feel better when they spend outrageous amounts of money on DAILY pet expenses and that is fine. But to say that you cannot provide a bird an absolutely excellent home on a shoestring is false.

Some species ARE generally less expensive to keep than others. However, most larger species are far more LABOR intensive than others. Traipsing through the woods for safe macaw and cockatoo branches free just more WORK and it is NOT an optional activity like it may be for a senegal or a tiel.
(But arguably, even a tiels and sengal would LOVE the branches too so much that maybe it isn't an option either.!)

I think pet parrot keeping takes a lot more WORK than money.

Just my .02
Randa

Addie - $300-ish is about average for an avian vet visit that requires labs test.  (Except Tiva's vet - I want YOUR vet Tiva!! lol)
I spent over $4000.00 trying to keep my wee BC Conure, Beakboy alive...and he died in my hands...Anytime you get into a specialized field of medicine the price goes up.  But I have to say that it didn't cost a lot less when I brought my Border Collie in for tests and treatment after I first adopted him from BC Rescue.   It also costs me almost $400 every time I walk into my endocronologist's office.  I think all medical costs are out of control.

Wow. When my Umbrella broke his leg, at the joint, we were out of state at the time and driving our truck so we were up against the wall but even under all that mess it was cheaper than that. When we finally got him to his avain vet it wasnt more than
$ 500.00 for the xrays and setting it. I do need to give a BIG piece of advise here, know where the nearest EMERGANCY AVIAN vet is located and the charge to walk in the door. We see a real good avain vet but sometimes she isnt available at night or weekends so we have had to use the Emergancy vet and not all Emergancy vets are AVIAN vets either, so ask before you are rushed. We had to use a non avain emergancy vet in Indiana who had an xray machine sensative enough to use on a cockatoo. He did his best to set the leg but it being broken at the joint  and his limited knowledge of birds, it wasnt set properly and it wasnt immoblized. I give him credit for what he could do, but we still drove home to Florida and our vet met us at her office and the fun began. What fun it is to get a bird to NOT eat his 'cast'. I really hope we dont do THAT again. lol
