Hi everyone, Just reading a few of Nans tips and I found this toy making one: My question is this, is Jello gelatin ok to us for this receipes? Patti
These are almost as tough as acrylic toys but can be eaten. Take 9 TBSP water, 3 packets Knox unflavored gelatin, 5-8 drops of food coloring, bring the water and food coloring to a boil and add the packages of gelatin, stirring it until dissolved. Place in a shallow pan for 45 min, then peel out of bowl. Cut the mixture into shapes with coookie cutters. I found out that they shrink by half while you are air drying them. Be sure to put a hole in the center you you can string pieces together later on. Place on pie or cookie coller to air dry and make sure the pieces aren't too think because they dry from the outside in and you don't wan them to get moldy. If you go over 1/4 thickness you should prick them all over with a toothpick or fork so the inside will dry better |

I made them a couple of years ago. Mine turned out too thin and were very sharp at the edges. I was afraid to give them to the birds, thinking they could cut a foot. Jello may be OK but I used Knox. Sugar free Jello will likely turn out ok but you don't want sugar because in high humidity they will get very sticky. Annie |

I agree with Annie... not only will Jello get sticky, the sugar in it may promote bacterial growth especially if you are in a humid climate. Knox unsweetened I think would be better. I know Rica loves jello when I occasionally make it for the boys. Because of the sugar she only gets a tiny cube, but she gets all excited when she sees it. Kit likes it too. Hmmmm, anyone ever make a veggie jellofor their birds using knox? Annie, a long time ago, over a year ago I'm thinking, someone posted a link to a site that gave toy making tips and instructions. I lost it in one of the crashes I had. It had instructions for making a hanging play gym. Do you know the one I mean? I remember how to, but had questions on materials. |
