I'm about to order up a bunch of new snacks for Max from Drs Foster & smith. Right now he's on roudybush pellets, veggies, fruit, and things we share (that are good for him of course ;) but nothing that is reall considered a "treat". I'd hate to waste food, and I have no other bird momma's around here that I can give it to....so I'm trying to make an educated guess as to what he'll like . I'd like to give him a treat for when he does something good. In general, do CAG's like dried papaya? I know he doesn't like the harder nuts, like brazil. He threw all his dried banana when my mom was here and shared with him....so I know thats a no-go. Also, since he is on RB regularly, I think the zupreem fruity stuff he'll consider a "treat" if he gets a small bowl everyday.....or a snack. I'm leary of getting him anything like sunflower seeds because I dont want him to get obsessed with them :P Do they tend to like the chili's?? Sorry for so many questions.....I'll just leave it at that for now |

It sounds to me like you want something that can be given as a reward for good behavior or doing a trick. Many people do that but I like telling them they have done well. I say "Good girl!!" or Good Boy!!" in a very excited voice. They love it. Diana says, "Good girl" and "What a good girl!" and "Good, good good." Tiny pieces of almond would be good. High in calcium and many birds love them. Chop them small so they swallow it quickly and go to the next part of the learning. Pine nuts are loved by some birds but not mine. These are not to be placed in a bowl, just hand fed as a treat. Annie |

oh he gets TONS of good boy's LOL @ a treat being pizza...Max's FAVORITE things are pizza and string cheese ...both of which he doesn't get very often. pine nuts huh? I was looking at those....thats a maybe :) I've always stayed away from those wierd seed ball type treats...seem over priced and you only get a small quantity....do any of you feed yours birds those? do they like them? I guess I should just stay away from treats all together...he's just a bird ...my kids get a treat once a day, like a cookie or ice cream, just thought he'd like one too .....not very good reasoning, I know haha... |

Tina, referring to the "weird seed ball" treats...if you are meaning NurtiBerries...I feed them on occation. I crumble them into their foraging bowls. Rosie is the only one that likes her whole. Crystal |

My birds love Nutriberries. All of them have. I give each bird one macaw sized one at 3 p.m. every day. That's the only seed product Murphy grey eats. He is a fresh food and pellet eater. Diana is a seeds, pellets and dried veggie/fruit mix plus fresh veggie eater. Murphy will eat the dried vegie/fruit mix only if I put it on top of his cage and leave him alone. Neither will eat a peanut. Both love almonds and get two per day as a bedtime snack. Once in a while they get a walnut but don't always eat them. Annie |

I had to give my CAG cheese for 14yrs everyday and she was absolutely fine. The vet from Birdtalk recommends giving mozzarella instead of yellow cheeses. I'm not too sure how that got around but many vets recommend cheese. I did alot of consultations with vets when my bird first starting having seizures and they all recommended cheese. None of her bloodwork ever indicated a problem from eating it. IMO cheese once in awhile is fine. I'd just watch for diareaha. I also feed yogurt. No diareaha from that either. I'm not to sure aluminum foil would be the thing to put the seed wrapped in but it is a good idea just maybe using something else. Indy |

Repost to get rid of email addresses and duplications of posts: cheese is a dairy product. birds don't have the enzyme to digest anything dairy. watch out for his health if you continue to treat using anything cheese. ya know birds can get high cholesterol too? here's a better idea for a treat- cut up some clean aluminum foil in squares fill each with one half teaspoon or so of millet then fold or scrunch it up and give it as a treat instead of your cheese= call it a "milletberry" or something but do stop with cheese. | | |

I disagree with the foil wrap. I once got a tiny piece of foil from a Hershey Kiss stuck in my throat. I choked for days before I finally went and had it removed. Use parchment paper or waxed paper. Fold it and give it a hard twist and it will stay together. Annie |

LOL......honestly, I don't see why my birds like those things! I popped one in my mouth awhile back....and for the life of me, I couldn't swallow it... just chewed and chewed and chewed..... had to spit it out so I could breath.... NASTY! Crystal |

I bet you wouldn't put a Habanero pepper in your mouth and chew it up either, but the birds will. I haven't tasted everything I feed my birds but the pellets taste like crap. How they find them good to eat is beyond me. I think Boo looks wonderful. His molt isn't as ugly as so many are. Indy, the milk ingredient in cheese could maybe cause diarrhea but my concern is constipation. It does that to humans and my vet said Diana could definitely not have cheese because, since her proventriculus is so damaged, it may plug her up completely. I have read of birds who became constipated on cheese. Fed to much of it, obviously. Annie |

No Annie - I've not had a habanero in my mouth...it burns my enough just in my hands! But at least that must have FLAVOR! Those nutriberries had no taste at all....smelled pretty good.....but absolutely no taste!
The TOP pellets that we use taste like parsley! After chewing it up - it leaves a fresh GREEN taste in my mouth.
And yes, I agree with Annie - Boo looks amazing! His feathers are in beautiful condition! LOL.....definitely not the type of molt we had going on here.....my guys looked homeless.. :( Crystal

Yesterday when the flock was out in the playroom, I gave everybirdie one of those small tiny pumpkins I picked up at the local country market. I thought they would be a good healthy snack for them. Boy was I wrong. Who thought 10 itsy bitsy pumpkins could be broken down into a zillion tiny pieces. What a mess!!! I swear they all thought they were a new toy!!! Marti |

Max has had a small "string" of string cheese once or twice a week since we have had him and he has never had an issue. String cheese is mozzerella and thats the only kind he has ever had. When we got him my cousin warned me like crazy that "cheese will KILL HIM!"....so I did my research and found that mozz was fine in small amounts, and is actually good because it's high in calcium and protien. I also read in BirdTalk a few times of people giving their birds cheese in small amounts. Anyway....so are those nutriberries pretty good and healthy??? I wasn't sure if they were worth it . I got him something similiar way back when we first got him and he didn't like it....maybe i'll give those a try |
