* If you responded to this on another board, please don't contribute to my state of confusion by adding here--if you think of something more, add it in the other location.

As part of my research for species profiles:

Based on your own experience with birds that you have now, or have had previously, what do you think people should know about Macaws, in order to make an informed choice about whether or not they should live with one?  I want the good, the bad, the ugly, the biggest surprises, challenges, rewards--tell me what you've learned!  Did you start out with the intention of owning this species, or were you *picked* by one?

Please give the species, the age your bird was when you got it, and what age it is now.  I may want to contact some of you by email, to obtain more extensive information about some of what I see mentioned

Hi, we have a B&G who definitely picked us.  We were planning on getting an African Gray but baby Dude stepped right up onto DH arm and snuggled right into him. Dude was only 18 weeks old but he knew that he wanted to go home with us.

The Bad  --  (1) B&G's are very noisy.  At dusk, Dude yells his lungs out, and there doesn't seem to be a way to stop him -- he is calling out to his flock.  (2) the mess  -- if Dude isn't interested in eating it -- it gets flung out of his bowl which means onto the floor, onto the walls, etc.  We perch and cage trained so we don't have a problem with him pooping everywhere.  If he is on our arm he lets us know he has to go (he does a kind of poopy dance) and we put him up on his perch.

The Good -- Dude is unbelievably snuggly -- he loves to hang out with us on the bed or couch.  He will crawl under blankies to get to my hubby.  He is also perfectly happy to chill on his perch when we are all in the same room.

Unexpected Problem we fixed -- we have homes in NY and FLA -- we were used to flying between them but Dude is too big to go in a carryon and I refuse to let him fly in cargo  -- so now we drive back and forth so that we can take Dude with us.  He travels in a dog carrier in the back seat and we stop every 2 hours so that he can step up and do his business outside.  He eats pellets and juicy fruits like grapes or cantalope -- its not an ideal situation but it works for us.

Maya, 16 week B&G, isn't that noisey at all. He has his moments but is mostly on the quiet side. LOves to be on the floor hanging out with the family and the dogs, ( I believe he thinks he's a dog). His favorite spot is the front window just watching everything outside and he'll sit there literally for hours, I put paper towel on the floor for his accidents. When it's bedtime he puts himself in his cage and goes to sleep. We are all totally amazed by this as we didn't teach him this.Tells me when he's hungrey by following me into the kitchen and sitting on my foot! He is also trying to say hello! I haven't run into any problems yet. He doesn't throw food and is quite the entertainer. We are truly enjoying him and love him so much!

As you can see I share my life with a Beautiful and very Loving 'Hyacinth Macaw and her name is"HulieAzul"she just turned 5 years old she has been my Blue Baby since she was 10 weeks old.I have found that the Hyacinth Macaw is unlike any other parrot I have had in our family and I have raised feathered family menbers for 25 years! but raising HulieAzul has been like starting all over with very little experence, not that she would outshine my other feathered family menbers but her kind and gental manner from the very begaining she hopps all over and loves to play on her back with her wings in the air and she likes walking everywhere she goes with her 2 foot tail draging behind her. I can hold hernext to my chest and she wraps her very large wings around me like a blue angel! she loves to eat Macadannian nuts all the time which is a big part of her main diet.I have to order them 25 pounds at a time and I get them sent over from Hawaii! that is also HulieAzul's first home , and where I first flew over to pick her up (Kona Hawaii) that is where she got the first part of her name "Hulie"it means "Spin" in Hawaian, and boy can she Spin! (Ha,Ha) Hope you enjoyed hearing alittle bit about my Blue Angel!   Kristi & HulieAzul

About Rainbow - He's a 5-ish year old B&G and he came to live with me in August because he was too loud in his outside aviary.  I've known him since he was a wee fledling but living with him is an education.
I wouldn't have "chosen" a large parrot (See Tiger Lily, Smee and Sammy pictures) butcircumstances being what they were I chose to bring him home and "adjust"....(Owner couldn't keep him - too loud.)
And what an adjustment it's been!  Living with Smee Grey and Tiger Lily 'Zon is a cake walk.  Add Sammy/Mini-Caw and things got a bit more hectic but soon settled in.  Then comes Rainbow....sigh....
Before anyone even thinks about thinking about bringing a Macaw home they should spend a lot of continuous time with one, at a parrot shop or friends house or rescue.  I hate to state the obvious but they are BIG!  And heavy.  And messy and intelligent and loud and curious and loving and can snuggle you one moment and nip you the next....just to see what you'll do!  lol  They're predictably unpredictable.  Steady as a rock yet spontaneous as a summer rain storm.  They retain more species memory, no matter now many generations removed from the jungle they are, than any species of parrot I've ever been around.  So do your research about their actions in the wild - they'll duplicate that behaviour in your home and it'll help if you understand why they're doing it.  Don't get a Macaw if you're afraid of large beaks - they occasionally use them -  or if you hate to clean or want peace and quiet.  Do get a Macaw if you want to live with one of the most interesting and challenging parrots that ever strutted across a perch.

It has been 2 years since Tico, our B&G came into our lives. He was neither picked out nor were we choosen by him, but it was fate that brought us together,I knew nothing about Macaws when I first brought him home, he was 4 months old then. I learned really fast,2 years later I am still finding out new things about these wonderful birds. People should remember that these birds are family birds. They like to be included in daily activities. Tico has many perches and playstands throughout the house(my Husband says that Tico has more stuff throughtout the house than my 3 kids did when they were little!)So wherever we are, he can be with us. I always say that Tico will be my "Forever Toddler".There are so many things about Tico that are wonderful, he is smart, funny, loveable, playful etc... But then there are some down things also, his beak, and yes, he does use it ocassionally, and yes, it does hurt! The mess he makes, wether it's from him playing, preening, pooping or eating there is ALWAYS something to clean-up.  Sometimes his mess will take him a couple of minutes to make and me a hour to clean it up-LOL!  So it's been 2 years since this wonderful bird captured my heart, I wouldn't change a thing. the good in him always out weighs the bad. I am very happy that we will be going through life together.

**Before people consider getting a bird, they should realize that birds are not noveltys. They are for life. They are not an object that can be passed along when they get tired of it or they realize just how much work is involved.

I have to include a few comments about Mini-Macaws.  I haven't been a Mini-Mom long but Sammy is a fast teacher.  She is like a HUGE bird in a wee bird suit.  As cocky and sure of herself as a Conure and as dignified as an eagle with a healthy amount of Macaw presence - that's my wee Sammy.  A parrot of few words but expressive beyond anything she could say.  When she's dancing and bobbing on my finger and "speaking" to me in that gruff little voice I am the captured one, not her.  She is so intelligent and so determined  (Or is that relentless?) when she wants to do something or get to something.   Her tenacity is amazing.   And her resilience....I don't know if all the wee Macaws are so "adamant" and "definite" but there's nothing wishy-washy about Sammy.  You will know exactly how she feels and she'll do exactly what she wants to do when she wants to do it....unless you bribe her with pistachios...lol  I can't speak about all YC Mini's but Sammy is not a bird that I leave in one room while I'm in the next room.  She is a monkey with feathers!  And I can't figure out how she gets down off the tree or perches????  She will definitely alter the legs of any wooden furniture she comes across and climb up curtains faster than a half grown kitten so don't turn your back!
From what I've read about other Mini's here at BB, Sammy isn't the only one that can't be on the shoulder.  She'll snuggle in and then nip my ear for no apparent reason.  Seems to be a trend there...?

I do have to agree with everyones resonces to B&G's, my buddie is very much the same. My buddies name is Ezzie.....LOL.....it used to be Esmerelda until I had him DNA sexed! As to his true age?.......??? He came to me through a local rescue club here were I was wanting to fostering parrots. He was the first. But from as much info I could get on him, I guess he around 7-15 years old. A Macaw was not what I purposely looked to get.........but I am glad he found me! I have a Red Lored Amazon that totaly loves me....and I was happy with that! But as soon as Ezzie got to the house.........well we have also become inseperable LOL! 8 mounths ago, my very soon to EX gave me an ultimatum.....find Ezzie a new home or find one with him! So Me, Rio, and Ezzie flew the coop! I believe Ezzie has picked me.......everyone that has met him (besides the ones that are intimidated by him LOL) has not been able to get close to him without him striking out at them...
The good and bad..........he will snuggle with me for up to a half hour....then take a swipe at me.......and yes........he knows how to use that very big beak! Though he has only twice ever drawn blood with it! He will follow me through the house just to see what it is that I am doing and love to play peak a boo under a sheet LOL........he is now putting his wing over his head........then popping it out........and saying........peak a boo LOL! He does talk (when he wants too!) but mostly speaks Amazon! He does say.......hello....hello bird....shut up (he was saying that when I got him)....Ouch.......and he will sneeze just like me........there are other words but I am rambling...........LOL! As for mess........Yep.......he is messy when he wants to be.........and will throw half full food bowls right to the floor once he has had enough......and I do think he gets a kick out of me cleaning it up! Hell........I could go on for hours............but here is a pic of my bud........Ezzie. One thing for sure..........you really need to be a person that is willing to put up with some very loud noise and be willing to chase after a toddler for the rest of your life............and if you are or have ever been owned by a parrot.............there is allways a mess LOL! Take care.........

I have been owned by a B/G for approx 2-3 yrs now. Cookie was an owner surrender at a pet store (now I work at that same store) and we kind of picked one another.  She was a almost 2 when she came to the store.  We (hubby and I) were going to the store every night to visit his cockatoo who was still being hand fed baby food (I did not work close enough to home to feed her lunch so we we had to keep her at the store until she was no longer taking baby food lunch) when Cookie came in ... her owner gave her up because his girlfriend was moving into his apt and she was afraid of Cookie.  So it was her or the bird ... the guy made the poor choice of the chick!  But his loss was my gain!  By the time I put Cookie on layaway, she could be held by anyone but if she heard my voice as I came thru the door, She was looking for me over their shoulder!!  I didn't believe it until I checked it out and saw that she actially looked for me and fussed until I got her.

Bad .... the mess ... but then again, Cookie is no more messier than my 4 cockatiels .... I think the worse thing about "her" is the price of her toys!!!  And they go thru wood toys quickly!  Sometimes Cookie can be loud but so can any of my other birds.  But when people learn how many birds I have, they find it hard to believe that my home is quieter than most people's home that has two toddlers in it!!  The only "bad" noise levels from Cookie is 1) If you have food and refuse to share it with her!  2) If she feels that her buddy, Zeus, our Umbrella Too is being harmed, she sends out a warning scream until we reassure her that Zeus is fine.  3) When she hears mom and dad up and cannot figure out why she is not out on her perch yet!!

Good:
Wow ... where to start with this ... free entertainment ... a snuggling partner that you don't have to worry about losing half your closet too when they move in!! ... someone to laugh with or at! ... you now have a royal taste tester!  LOL ...

I would not give Cookie up for the world. In fact I love the B/G's so much, we are adding another B/G to our flock!  I would never tell anyone not to buy a B/G.  If you have researched enough to know the basic feeding and activity of a parrot, then you are good to go.  B/G's are the way to go!!

Smiles!

Kristi
