Normally when a bird arrives here at Nan's Jungle I have their cage and try to set it up as close as possible. Depending on the bird's tempermant for change, I add some new toys or perches as well, but I make small changes slowly over time. Listen to the former owner for the inside placement of toys and food dishes
Their cage is the only known thing a bird has left whe have left when coming to a different home. I just feel they need some consistancy whenever possible. Of course sometimes the cage can't be used for one reason or another, and that does happen, but try to get the cage whenever possible.
With Emily we wrote each other a lot and I learned all about how to make Jack's food, his favorite toys, medical info,. This all helps  to make the transition easier on everyone, especially the bird!

Some good ideas there and I've usually always had spare cages set up in the quarantine room.......

How would that work Nan when you bring home the birds cage?.. What all do you do to disinfect the cage, toys and food bowls while in quarantine or would that be necessary since everything is separated ?............. Too2

I have gone so far as to write up a description of every cage with exact bowl placement and exactly which foods they love. I have a large note book with dividers, one section for each bird. Medical history, lab results, vet bills (Ugh), food likes and dislikes, etc.
I did this when so many of mine had illnesses and it occurred to me that if I got sick or died no one but me knew how their cages were set up so they were comfy.
Not long ago I took my son thru the process of digging out all the info on each bird so it can go with them someday.
I also have a page in the computer for each bird that covers all of that.
Diana's medications were so complicated that I have sheets describing step-by-step how to compound each drug, then how to dose each one.
I think every little bit helps a new owner and makes the bird more comfy with a move to a new home.

I keep all the e-mails that I've gotten with each owner, including any recent vet visits etc and keep them each in a folder. in the case of Jack,  Emms and I talked for months about him, so I got a feel for his personality and his needs.

Cuurently no one is on meds here ( knock on wood) but I like your system Annie! In the event that would happen I will be prepared.

I do disinfect each cage that comes in the house though, that's just a precaution especially if the bird has not had good care, and any good bird owner expects you to quarantine.

After a few months or so you can tell when you can make some small changes in the cage or food bowls etc... I rotate cages in the bird room too so no one gets too attached to one corner or another.
