Hello,

I have two parakeets that I adopted from the Animal Humane Society a couple of years ago. They weren’t together when I bought them but they just love each other and groom each other on a daily basis. Anyway, they have always been in their cage, I have never clipped their wings, and I have never opened the door to their cage so they can come out walk around, etc. Well, they seem very happy (I guess) but I am wondering if they’re really content being together in their cage everyday. They don’t talk, and they aren’t really that excited about humans, etc. I am wondering, is it too late to train them, or to take them out of their cage and let them walk around, etc? I do feel kinda sorry for them, being in that same cage day after day. What can I do to make their little bird lives a little more exciting? They have toys and things in their cage. Maybe a new cage?

Thanks!

Mokie

Hi
It's more than likely that they won't want to come out for a while. They're probably so used to the cage that they'll be scared. You could just leave the door open for a little while everyday until they get used to it. Maybe get one of those bolt on perches to put right outside the door. I never close my budgies door, unless I want to have the front door open or take him outside in his cage. Other than that he has free rome. He doesn't take much advantage of it though. He flies to the window sill right next to his cage and one window sill that's way up high in the living room. There's toys and food at both places and he's never really ventured farther than that for some reason.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Is your bird's wings clipped? Can we clip their wings or is it better to take them and have their wings clipped by a professional?

Thanks

Hi Mokie,

I unfortunately had to send my little budgie to heaven this week, but when he was alive, he really didn't like to come out of his cage. I would sometimes take him out and place him on top...and he would sit there not knowing quite what to do. My other one HATES the outside world...will not come out. Period. The cage has lots of fun things, mirrors, toys, different perches and things to chew on - and I move stuff around every once in awhile so that they don't get bored. Because they don't come out, I don't clip their wings, but I would suggest it if you are going to let them have free reign, as they can really hurt themselves if they flew into a window. Budgies can be quite skittish and they panic easily, and you wouldn't want anybody hurting themselves.

Christine

Shyster budgie isn't clipped. I clipped him until he was tame though, so for the first few moultings I kept his wings cut so he couldn't constantly fly away from me. He learned really fast that trying to fly meant heading to floor. Once he would stay with me and seemed to enjoy my company, then I let his wings grow. He did fly into the window at first, never really hard though because he couldn't fly well yet. He learned that really fast too. It just LOOKS like outside...but it's illusion lol! He doesn't hit anything now...he's a very precise flyer. It's so cool to see how he flaps to raise up and swoops down to manuver through the vaulted ceilings. If you've never clipped wings before I would take him to the vet and have them show you how. Good luck and let us know how the taming goes.
