Here's an article about toxicity from our jewelry. Some of these items surprised me when I first read the list.

Too and Annie, I'm earmarking both of these links to read more carefully later.

Thanks!

You checking up on me, Toolady?!?!? lol

I did read the information on metal in Birds Just Wanna Have Fun. I just re-read it, but only after I figured out that the link you put up there has been changed to:
I did indeed read "All That Glitters" and I actually sent that to a friend who got a kick out of her tiel and budgie chewing on her earrings and necklaces. She no longer does, thanks to me! lol

Thanks, Toolady ... this is good information for all of us!

There are so many metal toxicity cases in birds, and that is why I made the orginal "ottalast a lifetime" toys for my birds. All medical grade stainless steel, even stainless double welds on the pipe bell at the bottom.
All the wood is bird safe and I dye it in food coloring bought from the manufacturer in gallon jugs. I feel these are the safest toys since there is no rope or chain to get tangled in and I know there is no toxic material. The fact the birds and other animals like them makes it even better, and when people who have one tell others how great they are I figure I am helping the animals have safe toys. Marti received a box of odds wood pieces to put on her toy for the holiday. She has one of the prototypes and I gathered her birds like it too.
A few people have bought the smaller ones for their rabbits and use it to put food on since it won't leach toxins.

That's great, Linda! Crystal makes her Byrdbell toys in the same manner. She also uses untanned leather in some of them.

I am so grateful that we are able to get toys that are both fun and safe for our birds!

We had mold growing on the untanned leather - and that was not a pleasant thought. But then, thinking about what leather is its amazing there were not bad bacteria also.
I am so picky its not a good thing. But then I had a friend in florida bought bird toys at a pet store and the birds got metal poisoning - and it was sold as a bird toy.

Linda, I have found all kinds of things in pet stores that are sold for birds, for dogs, for other small animals, that are NOT good for them. Most pet stores seem to be intent on make money, and really don't care about the best interests of the animals/birds.

One of the things I love about groups like Bird Brainz is that we educate each other about what to look for, so that the members don't have to rely on uninformed pet store employees for information.

Crystal is one of the pickiest people I have ever met, and hers are the healthiest, most beautifully feathered birds I have ever seen.

Does Crystal have her bird pictures up someplace? and
who are you all calling old?

Scotts, what high speed internet is available in your area?
Dad is frustrated how long his dial up is taking.

Feathers/Dale was referring to the age of the thread. It started on December 5, 2005. Toolady, being her cheeky little self, brought it forward to see if I had done what I said I was going to do!

These links are both very worthwhile. and I will put them on the Bird Safety Links page.
