I was putting off getting another Quaker, I was just too heart broken about my little Bubba being so sick and not pulling through. Well Wednesday night, Bubba's vet called me and told me that her friend had 1 little one left from a clutch of 3 and she told her to hold one because she knew that I had lost my little guy and may want to take it. Her friend is a reputable breeder of Quakers (and only Quakers). She has been breeding them for 15 years and never tries to have more than 4 pairs so she can attend to them and give them a lot of attention. At first I said no. But then my fiance kind of egged me on and said it wouldn't hurt to take a look. So we went to her house and this little guy was out on the play gym. He's very friendly, a bit nippy, 11 weeks old, and completely healthy! My vet was there and she said that he was perfectly fine and the breeder gave me a one year health guarantee. We signed that and also an adoption agreement. She also likes to do follow ups and keeps in contact with her adoptive bird's parents. I couldn't think of another name but Bubba, but I added the "Gump" to it (like Forrest Gump--Bubba Gump shrimp) So that it can honor my little one who's flying like an angel now, but also be slightly different to give him his own identity. He loves to lay on my chest while I'm watching tv and tries to push his way under my neck and hang out there too. He's a little chatter box and squawks for my attention as soon as I come in the door to his room (he's of course seperated from my tiels). Beth |

Just a side note, I met with the breeder Wednesday night, and didn't pick him up until yesterday afternoon. I got references from other adoptive parents and checked them all out. One of the women has had her Quaker from the breeder since 1995. The breeder was more than happy to let me have time to think it over and hold him for me, which I appreciated. It was a completely different experience from my last adoption. My vet also let me look at the breeder's vet records for the past 5 years with the breeder's permission. Everything checked out and I'm very happy : ) And yes, I still miss my first Bubba and I get a little pang in my heart when I think about him. I'm sure we all know that we can never "replace" a beloved fid.

What a little doll he is. Congratulations! Sounds like the new breeder is a "real breeder." I am so glad to hear that this was done so carefully. Annie |

Congratulations, Beth ... he is a real sweetie! Like Annie, I'm happy that you found a good breeder, and checked her out beforehand. It's a bonus that your vet is familiar with her as well. I'm looking forward to lots of stories and lots more pictures! Abby |

What a cutie pie! I think you have an awesome vet....one who cares about the patients parents as much as the patient. Don't go feeling guilty for opening your heart for that new sweetie.....you've got enough love around you there for a whole flock of em. I'm glad your hubby pushed you a little....that little guy there is gonna love his new Mama and Papa! |

Beth, I too am so happy to learn you adopted another Quaker! I like his name too! :>)
You're honoring your first Bubba by getting another one ... even though his time with you was so short, you enjoyed him as much as you could under the circumstances.
Love and enjoy this little fella and, I'm certain, your first Bubba will "be there" loving him too! Heartfelt Hugs! -Cheryl

Thanks everyone! He is such a joy to have!!! Even when he has his high pitched squawk fits!! The breeder had taught him step up and he was just learning it, now he does it on command b/c he knows when he does it he's free from his cage! My lone tiel, Dolce is a bit jealous. I usually spend a lot of time talking with her and letting her roam around but I want to get Bubba acquainted with me and the normal routines in the house so most of my attention has been focused in getting him used to everything. So today I took Dolce outside for a nice spray bath and to clean her cage. She sat on my shoulder (she's clipped and has a harness) the entire time like a good girl : ) It's so funny to see how their personalities change when there's a new member in the flock! Even though they're in separate rooms she's still curious as to what the heck that squawking noise is! |

Beth I am so glad you were able to open your heart up to another baby Quaker. And of course I like his name! lol! Maybe you will end up calling him Bubbie like I seem to do all the time with my Bubba. lol! Just got use to all the pets having names ending with "ie" and it just flows when I call him. Congratulations! Indy |
