During the stop, Trooper Jenks smelled marijuana from the vehicle and was told by the driver that there were drugs in the center console. When he asked the passenger if he had any drugs, the man produced a handgun and opened fire, striking Trooper Jenks once in the head and once in the body.
Both men fled the scene but were arrested 13 hours later in Nashville, approximately 200 miles from where the shooting occurred.
Trooper Jenks' body was found next to his patrol car by two hunters who were in the area. His patrol car's video camera recorded the entire incident.
Trooper Jenks had served with the Tennessee Highway Patrol for almost 3 years. He is survived by his wife, parents, four brothers, a sister, grandparents and a large extended family. | |

The officer was driving south on North Livermore Avenue about a mile north of Interstate 580 when he lost control of his patrol car around a sharp curve and struck a tree.
Officers from the Livermore Police Department located the drunken driving suspect on eastbound I-580 near Greenville Road, and he was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of DUI, evading police, and driving without a license.
Officer Miller had served with the California Highway Patrol for one year and was assigned to the Dublin Station. He is survived by his wife and two children. | |

A stolen vehicle that was being pursued by other deputies had just passed over the stop sticks and the two deputies ran into the road to remove them. It is believed that, because of the darkness, the deputies did not observe how fast the pursuing units were following behind the suspect vehicle. One of the pursuing patrol cars struck both deputies, killing them. The driver of that patrol car was seriously injured and flown to a local hospital.
One of the suspects in the stolen car was apprehended a short time later. The second suspect remains at large.
Deputy Manuel had served with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He is survived by his wife and two sons. | |

Their patrol car went out of control as it crossed a bridge on U.S. 63 in Texas County. It is believed that severe weather and ice were contributing factors to the cause of the crash.
Officer Whittingham and the deputy were both transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition, where Officer Whittingham later passed away. One of the inmates was also killed in the accident and the other was seriously injured.
Officer Whittingham was a volunteer transport officer for the Howell County Sheriff's Department and was enrolled in the sheriff's academy to become a full time deputy. She is survived by her husband and five children. | |

Detective Haws was driving south on Road 156, just north of Road 344, when he saw a car parked next to an orange grove on the east side of the road. Detective Haws made a U-turn and pulled behind the car to investigate. As he talked to the car’s occupants he saw a man in the orchard. Sending the car on its way, he told sheriff’s dispatch he was checking a man in the orchard.
Once out of the grove, the man pulled a semi-automatic firearm and fired an unknown number of shots, striking Detective Haws.
Several passersby, seeing the officer on the ground used cell phones and stopped at nearby homes to call for help. One passerby, a nurse, stopped and began to give Detective Haws first aid until EMS arrived. Detective Haws was taken by ambulance, escorted by California Highway Patrol vehicles, to Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia, where he died at 3:20 pm.
A suspect was taken into custody later in the afternoon and charged with murder. He was still in possession of the murder weapon when he was apprehended.
Detective Haws had served with the Tulare County Sheriff's Office for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and three young children. | |

At 1400 hours, Deputy Nguyen and his partner, both assigned to gang duties, were patrolling in plain clothes when they made an unscheduled stop at a known gang house in the area of 47th Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard. There, they saw a man who they have never seen before. When they attempted to make contact with the man, he fled on foot and led officers on a chase through yards of nearby residences. During the foot pursuit, the suspect opened fire, striking Deputy Nguyen in the neck, killing him.
A 16-year-old suspect was later arrested and charged with the murder of Deputy Nguyen.
Deputy Nguyen served with Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for 7 years. He is survived by his wife. | |

The officer parked his patrol car a short distance away from the home to wait for additional units to arrive. As he waited, the suspect drove towards his patrol car and then opened fire as he pulled even to the officer's door. A rifled slug struck Officer Nicholson in the chest, penetrating his vest.
Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Nicholson was able to return fire, emptying his service weapon into the suspect's car as he fled.
The suspect fled into a nearby cemetery, where he engaged members of the Special Response Team in a shootout. The man was wounded and taken into custody.
Officer Nicholson was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Officer Nicholson had served with the Smithsburg Police Department for just over 1 year and had previously served with the Maryland Division of Correction. He is survived by his mother, father, and girlfriend. | |

Officer Smith and other police officers were responding to a fight at a club in Tumon at 3:00 am. While en route, the motorcycle Officer Smith was operating was struck by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver. Officer Smith was thrown from the motorcycle to the pavement.
Guam Fire Department units arrived at the scene moments later, but Officer Smith had already died from head trauma before he was transported to the Guam Memorial Hospital
The suspect fled the location, but was later apprehended. Her blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time. She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to yield to emergency vehicles and driving without a license.
Officer Smith is survived by his wife and two children. He was assigned to the Tumon-Tamuning Precinct. | |
