As you keep adding gifs and pictures and visiting various websites you will notice that your pc is slowing down and possibly coming up with messages like "explorer has performed an illegal operation" or maybe your "photo upload" has disappeared. To name a couple. At least once a week you should "clean" your PC. And I also suggest you perform a "defragmentation" at least once a week also. When in Internet Explorer......clik TOOLS then clik INTERNET OPTIONS. A window will pop up and you will see: TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES......then there are 2 buttons to choose from.......first clik on DELETE FILES another small window will pop up. Clik in the little square next to DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT. Then clik OK.........this deletes the "COOKIES" in your web browser files. These little things are placed there by sites you have visited and will slow down your pc performance. By doing this once a week you clear up some space on your PC and your computer doesn't have so much stuff to search thru to find the file you want to open. NEXT......clik on SETTINGS........a window will pop up and you will see a box that says INTERNET OPTIONS and TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES FOLDER. There should be a mark next to the option that says AUTOMATICALLY and below that you will see a slide bar with a box that says AMOUNT OF DISK SPACE TO USE......the higher the number.....the more cookies you will store and the slower your pc will run......I have mine set at 10mb........this way there are very few cookies that will be allowed to be stored. When you first re-set this number.....visit the sites you visit most often first....this way only the "important" cookies will be in there. They do actually help speed up loading the sites you visit, but it backfires if you have to many cookies for your pc to look thru. I'll bet you didn't even know it was fragmented! Well more than likely it is if you have never performed this procedure before. As you delete files on your computer they are not really deleted after all, they just have a little flag put next to them that marks them as not being used. The next time you save something the new file simply writes over the one that was flagged. And the information is not necessarily stored as one piece. It usually gets put all over the place on your hard drive, and it looks like this to your pc, RTSCNYAODEUAHI can you decipher this? This procedure will remove all of those little flags and put all of your information side by side to read as one solid line of info, to read like this CANYOUREADTHIS thereby taking less time for your pc to find all of the info it needs. BEWARE! If you have never done this before it could take a long time for it to clean up all of the bits and pieces. If you can do it at night and leave your pc on it should be done by morning. YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING ELSE ON YOUR PC WHILE THIS DE-FRAG IS RUNNING! EXIT ALL PROGRAMS BEFORE DOING THIS... THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD SEE IS YOUR WINDOWS DESKTOP SCREEN ( the very first windows screen) Ok did I scare you yet??? It's not that bad and it is well worth the time. To start the de-frag procedure.....CLIK ON START on your bottom task bar. SELECT PROGRAMS....then ACCESSORIES....then SYSTEM TOOLS, then DISK DE-FRAGMENTER. In a few seconds a small window will pop up and ask you which drive(s) you want to de-frag. De-fault is C: drive.......clik on the arrow next to where it says Drive C.....Physical Drive........and select....ALL DRIVES. Then clik on ok.....Follow any other instructions that may pop up and that's it....you're on your way to a faster pc!! Do this once a week if possible......the second time you do it will be way faster, since you have finally put things back in order there will not be as much to do next time. Here is a link that will help....it is a quick and painless online diagnostic program for your pc....I have tried it and it works great!!!! It is from the publishers of PC WORLD magazine. Be sure and give this one a try! WWW.PCPITSTOP.COM |
