A Bible Study About God
based on
A Bible Study from the Holmann Bible Dictionary

GOD

The personal Creator worthy of human worship because of His holy nature and His perfect love revealed in creating the universe, electing and redeeming His people, and providing eternal salvation through His Son Jesus Christ.

Heb 1:10 (KJV)
 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth;
and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

    God is unique in nature. No person, object, or idea can be compared to God.

1 Sam 2:2-3 (KJV)
There is none holy as the LORD:
for there is none beside thee:
 neither is there any rock like our God.
{3} Talk no more so exceeding proudly;
let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:
for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.

Anything said about God must be based on His revelation of Himself to us. Anything said about God must be said in human terms, the only terms we have and understand. The reality of God is always much greater than human minds can understand or express.
Isa 55:8-9 (KJV)
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
{9} For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Deu 4:24 (KJV)
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire,
even a jealous God.

Deu 3:22-24 (KJV)
Ye shall not fear them:
for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.
{23} And I besought the LORD at that time, saying,
 {24} O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to show thy servant thy greatness,
and thy mighty hand:
for what God is there in heaven or in earth,
that can do according to thy works,
and according to thy might?

God as the Bible's Primary Subject

The Bible and history begin with God.

Gen 1:1 (KJV)
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The last chapter of the Bible describes God as

Rev 22:13 (KJV)
 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end,
the first and the last.

All the way through Scripture God is primary. For Christians the primacy of God is reassuring, liberating, and instructive. It reassures us that God controls all existence. It liberates us to know the loving, redeeming God seeks to set us free. It instructs us to be able to look for signs of God throughout His universe.

God as Present with Us God is present in His world in a unique manner. He is never separated from any part of His creation. As spirit, God has the perfect capability of being present everywhere in the world at once. The psalmist exclaimed,
Psa 139:7-8 (KJV)
Whither shall I go from thy spirit?
or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
{8} If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there:
if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

The prophet Isaiah looked for the Messiah to be named Emmanuel, meaning, "God with us"; and Matthew reported that God fulfilled that promise in Jesus.

Isa 7:14 (KJV)
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel.

Mat 1:23 (KJV)
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us.

The end time will make the presence of God even more clear: God will live with His people.
Rev 21:3-5 (TLB)
I heard a loud shout from the throne saying,
"Look, the home of God is now among men,
and he will live with them and they will be his people;
yes, God himself will be among them.
{4} He will wipe away all tears from their eyes,
and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain.
 All of that has gone forever."
{5} And the one sitting on the throne said,
"See, I am making all things new!"
 And then he said to me,
"Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true:

God has many other qualities or attributes that are unique to Himself:

God is King over the Universe

Psa 47:5-8 (KJV)
God is gone up with a shout,
the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
 {6} Sing praises to God, sing praises:
sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
{7} For God is the King of all the earth:
sing ye praises with understanding.
 {8} God reigneth over the heathen:
 God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

God's existence is eternal, without beginning or end.

Psa 48:14(KJV)
For this God is our God for ever and ever:
he will be our guide even unto death.

God shows grace (undeserved favor) and mercy (kindness and compassion above that which may be expected) to those who trust in Him:

Psa 84:9-12 (KJV)
 Behold, O God our shield,
and look upon the face of thine anointed.
{10} For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
 I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
{11} For the LORD God is a sun and shield:
the LORD will give grace and glory:
 no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
 {12} O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

Psa 115:1-3 (KJV)
 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,
but unto thy name give glory,
 for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.
 {2} Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
{3} But our God is in the heavens:
he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

God requires our reverence of His great power and majesty:

Psa 89:5-8 (KJV)
 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD:
thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
{6} For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD?
who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?
 {7} God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
{8} O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee?
 or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

God is a Holy God. He is spiritually perfect, untainted by evil or sin, and deserving of our worship.

Psa 99:9 (KJV)
 Exalt the LORD our God,
and worship at his holy hill;
for the LORD our God is holy.

Hab 1:12-13 (KJV)
Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One?
 we shall not die.
O LORD, thou hast ordained them{the wicked ones} for judgment;
and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
 {13} Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil,
 and canst not look on iniquity:
wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously,
and holdest thy tongue when
the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

God will deliver those who worship Him and call upon Him:

Psa 116:3-9 (KJV)
The sorrows of death compassed me,
 and the pains of hell gat hold upon me:
 I found trouble and sorrow.
{4} Then called I upon the name of the LORD;
O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
{5} Gracious is the LORD, and righteous;
yea, our God is merciful.
{6} The LORD preserveth the simple:
 I was brought low, and he helped me.
{7} Return unto thy rest, O my soul;
 for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.
{8} For thou hast delivered my soul from death,
mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
 {9} I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.
