| What Is Hotlinking?
MSN will close down a group that has hotlinking ... Hotlinking is when you go outside msn groups and copy a picture and use it to post in a msn group. If you right click on the picture..and go to properties..you will see the url..if the url isn't msn groups...or have msn groups within the url its been hotlinked..if it has photo bucket it is not considered hotlinking because ....photo bucket allows for hotlinking from their site. (Some photo bucket accounts are paid for by the person who owns it...never copy someone else's pictures if they have photo bucket in the url as if that person does not have a free account with photo bucket...they are paying for their ban width. A person can have one free account with photo bucket ...but if they want more they have to pay for it..thus pay for the ban width also)
So, when you copy something...even if its in another msn group..please check before you copy it to make sure its not hotlinked. If its has a hotlinked url..don't use it ! ! ! Some groups do have hotlinked pictures within it ..and msn has not shut them down. However, all it takes is for the www site the picture is hotlinked from to contact msn about it...and msn will not question you ..they will just shut down the group that picture is in. Why? Because when you use (copy and paste to your post or page) a picture from outside msn ...the web site owner pays for ban width. When you use their pictures..you are actually stealing their ban width that they pay for. Thus you are stealing and are not even aware of it. However, if msn finds out about the hotlinking they will ask you no questions they will just act ..because if the picture is in a msn group...msn will be responsible for the ban width cost or either pass it on to you the manager or founder of the group the picture is in. (If permission is given from a graphic www site for you to use their pictures you must download them to your computer then upload them to a msn photo album to safely use them).
That is one of the responsibilities of having formed a msn group. So keep your eyes open and check for hotlinked pictures all the time ! Copying pictures from one msn group to another is not hotlinking nor is it ban width stealing. Its allowed on msn as we do not pay for ban width here in msn groups. (some pay for extra space...that is not the same as paying for ban width). So feel free to use pictures from other groups photo albums. Pictures from an msn photo album are safe to use and will never be a source of ban width stealing within msn groups. (it is advised that unless the manager/founder within any msn group doesn't give you permission to use their pictures, its best if you don't)
Never copy pictures from an msn photo album and use it in a www site outside msn. Again ...download the picture to your computer and upload it to your files or storage area within that www site area that is provided. When you copy a picture from outside of msn groups and use it on a page or post the person whom owns the www site gets a log on your IP address...and also much more information on you..its programed into the picture...that is how they know who is using the picture and where it's being used at.
