Apostles On Trial Again

Acts 22-32

1. Did the officers find the apostles in the prison?

2. What did they report about the doors being locked and the guards outside the doors? Where the apostles there?

3. What was reported to the chief priest and captain of the temple about the apostles?

4. What did they do with the apostles after that? Why do you suppose they feared the people?

5. Looks like when they brought the apostles before the high priest and
the council..they were pretty upset that they continued to preach in Jesus name.  What was the apostles' response that that?

6. Add anything else you feel is important about this section of Scripture.

Apostles On Trial Again

Acts 22-32

1. Did the officers find the apostles in the prison?  No, they did not.

2. What did they report about the doors being locked and the guards outside the doors?  vs 23: "We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside."  Where the apostles there?  No

3. What was reported to the chief priest and captain of the temple about the apostles?  vs 25:  "Look!  The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people."

4. What did they do with the apostles after that? The captain and his officers brought the apostles, without force, to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.  Why do you suppose they feared the people?  They knew if they used force on the apostles the people would probably stone them.  The people wanted to hear the apostles and most probably believed them.

5. Looks like when they brought the apostles before the high priest and
the council..they were pretty upset that they continued to preach in Jesus name.  What was the apostles' response that that?  Well, the apostles pretty much said we don't listen to you, only God!

6. Add anything else you feel is important about this section of Scripture.  I love how the apostles were calm about being interrupted in their teachings in the temple court to face the priests without digging in their heels.  I love how they put the priests in their place by telling them that they don't even matter against God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  They are admirable in the eyes of Christians, because that is how we are suppose to act when faced with judgement....hold our ground, stand firm, and proclaim the word of God!

For some reason MSN is running very slow today..and I was so busy yesterday that I did not get the chance to place a question here..sorry!
Thankyou Karla..very good..I sure am learning a lot from you and Vivian..hope to see some more get involved as time goes on.

Gamaliel"s Advice
Acts 5:33-42

V. 33- "When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them."

1. Question - When they heard what and who were the they in that verse?

V.34 - "Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while."

2. Question -What kind of information can you find out about Gamaliel? Use your Bible Concordance, the google search engine or just use the Bible Study Tools on the left of your screen toward the bottom.

V.35 "And he said to them Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men."
V. 36 "For sometime ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing."
V.37 "After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. he also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed"

3. Question - Tell us what information you can about Theudas. Also of Judas of Galilee. So what can you learn from these verses on obeying God rather then men?

V. 38 -"And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;
V. 39 "but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it --lest you even be found to fight against God."

4. Question- What can you learn from those two verses?

V.40 " And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go."
V. 41 "So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name."
V. 42 "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

5. Question - What could you say about the beginning of  V. 40 they agreed with him? What does it mean to you to be counted worthy..as the apostles were when they suffered persecution and shame for Jesus name? Did the apostles then finally obey and not preach in the name of Jesus afterwards?

Please take your time to answer this..I know I have given you a lot to study and search for. Take all the time you need..we are not in a hurry.
After this we will start on Chapter 6 --Love, Aalie

Gamaliel"s Advice
Acts 5:33-42

V. 33- "When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them."

1. Question - When they heard what and who were the they in that verse?  The "they" are the priests.  The "what" is what the apostles said to the priests in verses 29-32....about obeying God instead of men and their condemnation of what they did to Jesus, but that Jesus can give forgiveness of sins.  They also told the priests that they were witnesses of such things and that those who obey God are filled with the Holy Spirit.  The "them" are the apostles.

Gamaliel  Concordance:  The most famous Jewish teacher of his time and traditionally listed among the "heads of the schools."  Possibly he was the grandson of Hillel.  Like Hillel, he was moderate in his views, a characteristic that is apparent in his cautious recommendation on this occasion.  Saul (Paul) was one of his students.  Other bible verses:  Numbers 1:10 "Gamaliel son of Pedahzur"; Numbers 2:20 "The leader of the people of Manasseh..."; Numbers 7:54; Numbers 7:59; Numbers 10:23; Acts 5:34; Acts 22:3.  Easton's Bible Dictionary: "Reward of God.  A chief of the tribe of Manasseh at the census at Sinai."  Google search:  Gamaliel Shooting Supply; Gamaliel Foundation Home Page (A network of grassroots, interfaith, interracial, multi-issue organizations working together to create a more just and more democratic society.).

I will answer the rest later.

Don't know if everyone is interested in some of this, but take it with a grain of salt--I never knew alot of this stuff.  This is a boiled down versus (in my own words--hope it makes sense) of alot of the information I read on several sites.  I tried to include only what I read that was similar in a couple of places.

Gamaliel"s Advice

Acts 5:33-42

V. 33- "When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them."

1. Question - When they heard what and who were the "they" in that verse?

Per the King James version:

But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, the captain of the temple and the chief priests, and the officers of the temple.

While I was looking up information about Gamaliel I found all this information about the council or Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin is a Greek word meaning sitting together as an assembly or council. It was the recognized authority on Jewish Law. This law required every city to create a council of 23 judges. These men were picked by the local people and were suppose to be elders or people of position that the people knew as far and honest.  They made decisions on local law. Jewish law, also called Halakha, is from the Hebrew root which means "to go or walk". It is described as the laws of reality (written laws), as the knowledge of God (discussed or verbal), or the code of ethics required to be observed by God. I hope I understand this part correctly. The laws cover customs and traditions. Religious and non-religious life is not separate in the Jewish society, but considered part of the same thing. The law given to Moses is the bible law and rabbinic law is the laws made by the priests and councils, which include traditions and customs of the people. According to what authority you read there are different positions on all of this information. The secular world would divide the political portion out of the religious portion. The Christians and Jews would each present a different opinion.

The Great Sanhedrin was the legislative body and Supreme Court of Israel. It had 71 members in it. Based on Torah records, Moses established the Sanhedrin as commanded by God. "Assemble for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the people's elders and officers, and you shall take them to the Tent of Meeting, and they shall stand there with you." It also describes that Moses laid hands (semicha) on Joshua and "commissioned" or ordained him as directed by God. This is an outward sign of giving God's authority to Joshua. Moses also ordained the 70 elders. Ordination was the method used to replace any members who become unable to do their duties as an elder. It did not require the placing of hands on an individual, but to have semicha authority (laying on of hands) an individual had to be ordained by another semicha ordained rabbi. The title rabbi was held for those who had semicha as the method of ordination. This is considered the beginning of the Rabbic service. The Sanhedrin was a mix of political and religious power. They meet everyday except for the Sabbath and festival time. They made the over all law on Jewish life. They had power that the lower Sanhedrin did not have such as: they were the only one who could bring the king to trail; extend boundaries of the temple; and gave final decisions on questions of law. The line of authority came from a direct chain from Moses through semicha ordination until the Sanhedrin was dissolved by the Roman empire.

The leader was the High Priest, called Nasi or prince (after the creation of the office of Nasi was created) or Cohen Gadol; a vice chief justice, who was also called the Av Beit Din or Head of the Court- like our vice president-which sit over criminal trails; and 69 members. The first head of the office of the Nasi was a Hillel the Elder. Ater Hillel one of his descendants was over the Sanhedrin. All the judges must convene for national matter, but 23 members can be used to answer questions on law points. If the 23 cannot agree-then the 71 must meet.

The Gospel makes a distinction between the Pharisees (believe in afterlife and they accepted the Priest’s statements on law) and the Sadducees ( did not believe in afterlife with God, resurrection, they believed in power of selves.) During the time of Jesus the Sadducees seems to be in charge of the council. The Gospel also makes distinction between the elders, the politicians, and the lawyers. Secular teachings would divide them into religious and non-religious.

This is where Jesus was brought to stand trail before the council. This is one of the sticky points between Christian and Jews. The Sanhedrin could not find reason to punish Jesus--so they produced witnesses to accuse Jesus of blasphemy-a capital crime under Moses law. The Sanhedrin could not condemn criminals to death so they took him before Pilate, who had Roman authority to sentence him to death. When Jesus claimed to be the Messiah he broke Roman law, which viewed it as treason to the Roman Head Authority--but under Jewish law this was not illegal. Many claimed it during this time--only Jesus paid the price for it. Pilate didn't want to condemn, but was afraid of a revolt by the Jews-so he sent Jesus to the cross, but we all know it wasn't him that allowed it to happen. It was our heavenly Father making a way for us. Jewish sources state that this did not happen because the council did not meet during festivals or holidays. Some Jewish accounts also state that this portion was not written when it happened but years later when the Christians were accepting the Gentiles into their group. That Christians recorded it as it is in the Bible to make it more sympathy to those they are ministering to--the Gentiles.

Roman authority declared it a capital offense for the Sanhedrin to assemble and declared ordination illegal. Their law prescribe punishment for any Rabbi who received ordination. It also required the complete destruction of the city where it occurred. the position of Nasi became illegal and with the death of the last high priest the tax collected by the Sanhedrin was diverted to the Imperial treasury. The council was dissolved.

Per the King James Bible -- The teacher of Paul Acts 22:3 (King James Version)

3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

My study shows me:

In the Jewish encyclopedia-he is listed as the son of Simon and the grandson of Hillel. Quickly after Hillel died, his son Shimon (according to Jews encyclopedia) took his place and then died. There is little known about Shimon. Gamaliel was the successor as with the name Nasi, which was borne only by presidents of the highest religious council. Gamaliel is considered the first president of the Great Sanhedrin of Jerusalem. Gamaliel, which has a Greek meaning of "reward of God", was a Pharisee. He is also known as Gamaliel the Elder or Gamaliel I. He was the first to receive the title of Rabbari (our Master). He was a lawyer. He was one of the leading men in the Sanhedrin during 1st Century history. He was the teacher of Paul, the apostle. He appeared to have wisdom from his statements in Acts about the disciples.

Acts 5:34-39

34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;  35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.  36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.  37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.  38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:  39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

One of his teachings per the Jewish encyclopedia was: "Provide yourself with a teacher and remove yourself from doubt. He emphasized education and development as a source of self-efficacy. Rabbi Gamaliel was a leader who advocated tikkun olam (in Hebrew, tikkun means repair and olam means world), the notion that one is obligated to repair and perfect the world by using the legal system to enact laws that help society. For instance, some of his enactments were instituted to make it difficult for men to make trouble for their ex-wives He also allowed a previously married woman to remarry on the testimony of one witness that the husband is dead, rather than the Biblically required testimony of two."

Gamaliel changed many traditions of his time. People dressed the dead in expensive clothing—he ordered that he be buried in inexpensive flaxen garments. He made changes that were obeyed by all Jews because he appeared to have hereditary authority from his grandfather and father. He wrote many laws based on improving the world. There are many sayings of Gamaliel that are still used in traditions today.

3. Question - Tell us what information you can about Theudas. Also of Judas of Galilee. So what can you learn from these verses on obeying God rather then men?

Theudas was a Jewish insurgent. There seems to be confusion about Theudas. The only times he is mentioned in the Bible is by Gamaliel in Acts 5. Then Josephus who wrote a great deal of the Jewish history records a man by this name during a later date.

The principal source for the story is Josephus, who wrote: "It came to pass, while Cuspius Fadus was procurator of Judea, that a certain charlatan, whose name was Theudas, persuaded a great part of the people to take their effects with them, and follow him to the Jordan river; for he told them he was a prophet, and that he would, by his own command, divide the river, and afford them an easy passage over it. Many were deluded by his words. However, Fadus did not permit them to make any advantage of his wild attempt, but sent a troop of horsemen out against them. After falling upon them unexpectedly, they slew many of them, and took many of them alive. They also took Theudas alive, cut off his head, and carried it to Jerusalem. (Jewish Antiquities 20.97-98)"

The Bible states in Acts 5:36-37 "36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.  37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed." There is some writings that stated he claimed to be the Messiah.

The problem lies in that Josephus says Theudas revolt was in 46 and the speech by Gamliel was dated to 37 AD. Judas is considered to the in 6 or 7 AD. There are many theories about this to include: the Bible is wrong, someone rewrote it, or it was added later by someone else.

Judas of Galilee was another Jewish rebel. In A.D. 6 he lead a revolt against the Romans over taxation. He stated that no one but God had rule over Israel. He refused to pay the taxes. He became the leader of a group called the Zealots-who were considered a radical revolutionary Jewish sect. Judas and the Zealots are considered the leaders of the Great Jewish revolt. They are credited with the destructions of Herod’s Temple. His revolt was crushed by the Romans.

Gamaliel spoke of both these men as examples of failed Messianic leaders. He told the council to leave the Apostles alone because they would come to the same fate if they were not truly of God. He then went on to state that if the Apostles were of God that they couldn’t stop what was happening anyways. There were apparently many men who were claiming to be from God during this period. Life under the Roman empire was difficult for the Jewish people and everyone was looking for a mighty warrior to save them. That is part of the reason they did not want to accept Jesus as the Messiah—he came in peace and they wanted someone to right their wrongs thru punishment.

V. 38 -"And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;

V. 39 "but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it --lest you even be found to fight against God."

4. Question- What can you learn from those two verses?

1. Make sure that you are hearing from God.

2. If God tells you something—do it! No one can stop what God wills.

They thought that the teachings of the Apostles would end as Theudas or Judas. They did not believe that what the Apostles were saying was true.

They believed that because the Jewish council had beaten them and spoken against them that they were doing the right thing. They felt they were teaching and doing what was right under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

No the Apostles taught the truth as spoken to them by Jesus and as guide by the Holy Spirit.

I know what I want to say—it just isn’t coming out right…ugh.

My bible notes state of Theudas that "we know of him from no other istorical source."  But clearly AAliveLight found something so I went and looked further....
Nave's Topical Bible concordance states that Theudas was "a Jewish insurrectionist."  It also shows that Theudas "led a revolt."
Wikipedia Encyclopedia online had some interesting information on Theudas:  "Theudas is also the name of a follower of Paul of Tarsus, who taught Valentinius."
"Theudas (thyÅ«'dăs) (died c. 46 AD) was a Jewish rebel who probably claimed to be the Messiah. His name, if a Greek compound, may mean "gift of God", although other scholars believe its etymology is Semitic. Other scholars claim the name means “flowing with water?  At some point between 44 and 46 AD, Theudas led his followers in a short-lived revolt."

Judas of Galilee:  Acts 5:37 calls him "Judas the Galilean."  My bible notes state: "The Jewish historian Josephus refers to him as a man from Gamala in Gaulanitis who refused to give tribute to Caesar.  His revolt was crushed, but a movement, started in his time, may have lived on in the party of the Zealots"
Smith's Bible Dictionary states:  "Judas of Galilee, the leader of a popular revolt in the days of the taxing."
Wikipedia Enclyclopedia online states:  "Judas of Galilee or Judas of Gamala led a violent resistance to a census imposed for Roman tax purposes by Quirinius (sometimes spelled "Cyrenius" in Josephus) in Iudaea Province around AD 6. The revolt was crushed brutally by the Romans."  "In Antiquities of the Jews Book 18 (Chapter 1) Josephus states that Judas, along with Zadok the Pharisee, founded the Zealots, which he calls the "fourth sect" of first century Judaism (the first three are the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenes). Josephus blames the Zealots, a group of theocratical-nationalists who preached that God alone was the ruler of Israel and later urged that no taxes should be paid to Rome, for the Great Jewish Revolt and for the destruction of Herod's Temple.  Judas led an assault on a Roman garrison at the kings armory in Sepphoris, then the capital of Galilee (7 km from Nazareth). Josephus does not relate the death of Judas, although he does report (Antiquities 20.5.2 102) that Judas' sons James and Simon were executed by procurator Tiberius Julius Alexander in about 46 AD, several years after Rabbi Gamaliel's statement."

V. 38 -"And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;
V. 39 "but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it --lest you even be found to fight against God."

It's plain as day....All things approved by God and done in the name of God stand firm and happen completely, just as God wills it.  If you do a work planned by men, then there is nothing to it.  This answer also applies to Question #3.

NIV bible words it:  "His speech persuaded them."  Which means that the examples he gave of the two earlier insurgents swayed their minds to believe that if the apostles were not working in the name of God then death will come to them and that will be the end of their troubles.  Ha ha!  Little did they know that they WERE acting in the name of God!!!!
The apostles recieved a flogging, which means "Beaten with the Jewish penalty of forty lashes minus one."  LOL...why don't they just say 39!
They rejoiced  because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name (Jesus) because it is an honor.  Jesus suffered so greatly for the sins of all mankind that to be beaten and disgraced is a small penalty to show Him you honor Him and His death for you.
Did they obey the Sanhedrin?  Ha ha!  Nope!  They don't take orders from men....only from God!  My bibles states in Acts 5:42 "Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ."  God bless them....they are good examples of how Christians should be when faced with persecution of man for sharing the Word of God and spreading the great news of Jesus.

AAliveLight ~ I think you spoke perfectly clear.  I love reading your answers and thoughts as we go through this study.  You have a lot to share.  Thank you for all your time and effort that you put into this study.

Aalie ~ Thank you for your understanding and encouragement.  I couldn't finish the whole set of questions earlier because I didn't feel right with God.  I had to take care of personal business with Him so that I could be in the right frame of mind and heart in order to dive into the rest of the study.  God is all-compassionate and all-knowing....he knows my heart and my mind....sometimes they war with each other and I think that is Satan trying to worm his way in, but after a lot of prayer and time with God I think I have Him leading me again.

God bless you both.
Hugs,
Karla

Karla-

Thank you for your kind words.  I love the way you put it at the end it is what I was trying to get out.  I pray that God helps me put into words the thoughts that are in my heart...sometimes it all seems like it is tied up in my heart and I just can't describe what is coming from there...lol.  Your words are what I was trying to get out.  It does me good to read what others say because when I read something as eloquent as the way you put it--it just jumps within my being--the words on paper of what is in my heart...Thank you for being so good with words.

As far as finding facts or research since Aalie helped me with some places and on the daily thread they give me a list of books (which I put into the search engine and find info on it)-I have no problem finding information.  Its the reading and getting the words to thought on paper that I have trouble with.  English language has always been difficult for me.  I have had many a fight with a person trying to say something nice--that just didn't come off that way.  My husband has learned to read between my lines or ask me what I meant before he gets upset after 25 years of marriage.  He told me one time he thinks I was born in another country and brought here as a child.  I understand what I am hearing, but haven't learned to explain it in English...lol...hope that made sense....lol.

It wasn't till recently that I wanted to study.  When some versus sunk into my being like Psalms 27:8 ""You said Seek my face and  my heart said Your face, my Lord will I seek"--man it sank down deep--in a way that the word had never sank before--it took a life of its own--now I want to study--then finding the thing about the Sandehrin up above--I never knew the beginning of ordination--it excited me.  It makes it all real within me. I can't seem to get enough anymore.  Please post--I love reading what others think about the Bible it gives me thought to study.

AAliveLight ~
You are so very precious!  I love that verse from Psalm, too.
You are very expressive and I understand everything you say.
Perhaps it's because you are saying what you want from your heart with the help of God and another heart (mine) is able to understand with the help of God.
We are all very blessed in the name of Jesus Christ.....King of kings, Lord of lords!
God bless you dear.
