Albany, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Governor Elliot Spitzer is moving ahead
with a bill that would take any reference to abortion off the books in
New York and remove any current limits on them. The move would make
sure unlimited abortions are legal if the Supreme Court ever reverses
Roe v. Wade and allows states to prohibit abortions.
The bill would also remove limits on late-term abortions that makes
sure they are done only in hospitals if the abortions fail and women
need emergency medical attention.
It would also remove any limit on doing an abortion after the baby is
24 weeks into the pregnancy.
Back in April, Governor Spitzer said the state of New York "must
reaffirm our commitment to a woman's right to choose."
"In the wake of the recent United States Supreme Court ruling, this
legislation is a necessary measure to ensure that a woman's
fundamental right to privacy in New York is protected at all costs,"
he said, referencing the high court's decision on the
constitutionality of the national partial-birth abortion ban.
Pro-life advocates hope the bill will have a tough time getting
through the Republican-led state Senate.
Lori Kehoe, the head of the New York State Right to Life Committee,
blasted the governor in an interview with the New York Times after he
announced the bill.
She called Spitzer "a bully with an insatiable appetite and tunnel
vision to accomplish his fierce agenda."
The bill enjoys strong support from abortion advocates, including New
York state chapter of the National Organization for Women and NARAL's
New York chapter.
"New York must move swiftly and pass a strong law to protect the
fundamental right of a woman, and her doctor, to make private medical
decisions about birth control and abortion," Kelli Conlin, head of the
NARAL group, said in April.
New York is one of the handful of states that legalized abortion prior
to the high court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 toppling pro-life
laws.
Its pro-abortion law was adopted in 1970 and it came after Colorado
and Hawaii legalized abortion. The law also made it the first to allow
abortions on out of state women.
