Hi all here is a great Southern recipe. I am from South Carolina and I have adapted this recipe from my grandmother.
1 quart milk
2 cups bread cubes
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 eggs
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Few grains of nutmeg
Scald milk add bread cubes and butter or margarine. Beat eggs, add sugar and salt - add milk mixture and vanilla. Pour into baking dish. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Place bread pudding in pan of hot water, bake in oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until inserted knife comes out clean. Serves 4 to 6.
You can also add 1 cup raisins if desired.
This is the lemon sauce I make:
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 cups boiling water
4 tablespoons butter
Grated rind of 1 lemon
Pinch of salt
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Blend sugar and cornstarch. Add boiling water slowly stirring constantly. Boil over boiling water for 5 minutes or until mixture is translucent but not to thick. Remove from heat and add the butter.
I love it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or a big spoon of whip cream.
Enjoy!
