Now that I have given my life to Christ and commited to a godly lifestyle I am starting to see misconceptions about heaven and how to get there that many non-believers have about it. I ddin't see these before because as a non-christian you just wouldn't. These are the common misconceptions when people ask.."How do you get to heaven"?
1.If I do more good than bad than I'll get into heaven: You don't enter heaven by your works. You could sin once and spend the rest of your life doing good deeds and it makes no difference in God's eyes. Your good righteous deeds are like filthy rags in God's eyes and they cannot get you into heaven.
2. Only the really bad people don't go to heaven: Sin is sin in the eyes of our beloved God and whether it's a white lie or it's murder....it doesn't matter it's all the same. Murder may be worse in the eyes of man and in the eyes of the world.....but not God. All sin is deplorable to him and any unforgiven sinner will not be accepted.
3. I just have to believe in God to get to heaven: Lots of people believe in God......and that's it. Just because you believe in God but continue to sin and not follow his words will not get you into heaven....sorry.
4. Going to church will get me into heaven: Going to church is wonderful.....and it can be very uplifting. But many people go to church and learn nothing because they believe as long as they are sitting in there that they are saved. You could be saved and not go to church.
5. I've been a good person all my life and don't do wrong: You may have been Mother Teresa all your life but when you say you do not do bad things you are speaking of worldly bad things......in the eyes of man. God's standards are a whole different ballgame and all your worldly good will mean squat. Good works doesn't get you into heaven.
There is only one way and one way only to enter into the kingdom of heaven: The Lord Jesus Christ. "Nobody comes to the father except through me". We are not good enough nor we deserve to enter into the kingdom of heaven. But the gift God gave us by giving his only begotten son to die for our sins allows us to be cleansed and forgiven by the blood he shed on the cross and his ressurection three days later. Jesus doesn't care what we've done.....he loves us and wants us to repent and ask forgiveness so he can lift us up to heaven when it's time to go. Jesus is for the backslider. Jesus said in Luke "It is the sick who need a doctor...not the well". Jesus didn't die to rescue saved people.....he died to save sinners. God loves us all....even those who do not know him and Jesus is the only way to the father. If you want to know God you HAVE to have a realtionship with Christ.....there's no way around it. The only way to heaven is by accepting Jesus as your personal savior....acknowleging that he is the Son of God....and acknowleging that God raised him from the dead.....and acknowleging that you are a sinner who needs forgiveness and are willing to accept Christ into your life. It doesn't matter what evil you've done. Look at Paul the apostle before Christ knocked him to the ground....he murdered christians.....Christ's chosen people....and persecuted the word of God. And yet he was forgave and chosen to serve our Lord. Jesus is the only way to eternal life......the only way.
