What is really funny is that I don't really care for baked beans that much, but was always told that I made good ones. I have to admit that I do like mine better than most.
But even with the ones that you can buy today that says Baked Beans I have foiund that they are so much better if you basically treat them as pork and beans and go from there.
My favorite pork & bean as I mentioned is vande camps but I often when making a larger batch for a carry in buy the store brand, I have found because I "doctor" them up that they do fine.
For me the trick is adding a good pancake syrup or molasses and brown sugar. I like the barbacue sauce for the tang it adds to them, yet you don't want to over power the beans with it so that is why I use more ketchup than the sauce.
Adding diced onions and garlic also increases the flavor.
Just be sure to mix everything well together in a bowl before pouring into a baking dish so that the flavors all bend together.
