When I made my website, I looked for colours auspicious for business.  Art must reflect certain feelings...moods...purposes.....I need to learn how to choose appropriate colours and designs. This exercise of experimenting with note cards that are designed to reach people in a specific way will help me interface with customers.

Now, to my art work...
Younger son says that my art (note cards that I am experimenting with to learn new techniques and design) is only masculine.  He thinks that my colours are not for everyone.  I think that it is for both sides.   I may be wrong in this.

I am making a link to some of the cards that I was experimenting with, and would like to get some honest feedback on design (which he also says is too masculine to appeal to a wide range of people) and colour choices.

I am still learning.  I have not had design training...I just put in something that I like.  Same with colour.  I can learn, I think, whatever it takes to make designs appealing to a wider range of people.  To show him that I am versitile, I have made a pink thing.  My mind starts to crumble if I use pink, yellow or orange...sometimes green or red, but I did it.  I have not really attempted "cute," yet...the cartoon animals and people and teddy bears and such.  I would not have a problem with anime', but am not comfortable with much clip art that is "cartoony."  This is a problem with me.  I may be able to overcome it.  I am not sure, yet.

Any feedback and suggestions are welcome.  No use trying to spare my feelings and ego.  Younger son has already shot that thing down.  If I can't make things that appeal to a wide audience, I am wasting my time with graphics.

I have them all on a page...that will save bandwidth here.

Thank you for any comments, advice, suggestions, or help that you can give.  I truly do appreciate feedback, as it is such a rare thing to find people who will take the time to point out what does or does not work, and who can suggest how to correct the problems.  Knowing what to correct and how is important to me.

Draco, I took a quick peek but I have to work all day today and I'm rushed (as usual). I like what you have done and I have some thoughts on colors (just thoughts tho). I will come back when I have the time to give opinions.
If you don't like pink, try using a cream background and adding the pinks or roses in the borders or with something light floral. I'll be back to really look at them and comment. They really do look nice. Nay

I like almost all of your examples. Some I wouldn't change, some just a little, and some I would make a big change in. Now remember, this is all just an opinion!

Ex1 - I would change the tone of the BG a little. A little lighter, a little softer.

Ex2 - I agree. I like it the best too. Nice agreement in the colors, the BG isn't overly fussy.

Ex3 - I like this, but the BG texture could be toned down. It's fighting with the flowers and letters. Put a white layer beneath and redude the opacity.

Ex4 - For this, how about a darker (navy) blue for the Thank You and florals. Do a Gaussian blur on the BG.

Ex5 - I like the idea. Try the same thing with a less cluttered wreath and a larger (thicker) font. Maybe just a lighter color for the lettering. You want to catch everything in that first glimpse, not sit and study it for details.

Ex6 - Very masculine. I really like the lettering. Stands out nicely. It looks like a name-plate on a high-end attorney's office.

Ex7 - What colors are congratulatory? Not black, LOL. Primaries are always a good choice, along with silver and gold.

Ex8 - I really like this one. Simple, elegant, sedate without being maudlin.

Ex9 - There is something not quite right about the hue or tint of the pink. It turned out as a sickly pink. Try warming it up a little with some yellow or lavender. I'm not really a pink fan anyway. I always go for more of a peach or coral color.

Ex10 - You're right, waaay to much movement in the BG. You can always try lowering the opacity of that layer. Sometimes that works well. You're also right about the choice of colors. Grey doesn't work, and rainbow is out as well. Since the bunny is a brush, it's easy to make it whatever color you want. Just change the FG color and that is what you will get with the brush. How about a washed out scenic BG, you can find backgrounds everywhere, and a light brown bunny?

Still friends???

I am looking for honest opinions.  You are giving them.
Friends?  Of course!!
You know much more about art than I do.  Why should I get angry when you take the time to give me tips, suggestions, and critiques?  I get to reap some of the benefits of your wisdom and experience.

Now comes the hard part...admitting that I don't understand a few things.
How do I put a white layer underneath (underneath what?)  and reduce the opacity?  Reduce which opaque layer?
I don't know if I can get the layers back to work on, since I saved the images as JPEG's, and that merged all of the layers.  I will see if PSP allows me to back up.

I need more images.  I only have one wreath.  I don't have a good stockpile of images, yet.  Have been searching, but have not found too many that can be used freely.  You don't put links back to the designer of bkg's and the designer of tubes and the designer of brushes if you are making a note card or similar piece.  The links and logos would obscure the content of the card.....
I am sure that with time, I will be able to amass a good selection of images in tubes or brushes.  I have just started collecting...just found out about them after I joined this group!

I feel that I am learning a lot here.  I saw that MSN finally picked up my joining.  It said that I joined March 17th.  I thought that was wrong...I thought I had joined much longer ago than that.  I have just been putting in some time on this thing...learning about features, settings, techniques, design.....  I have been trying out so many new things that it feels like I have been here a long time.

Once something is saved as a JPEG, that's it. Same with a gif or a bmp. Once all layers are merged, you can't change anything. You can add, but you can't take away or change a layer. I use a million layers. Hide some, delete some, change some, etc. until I am happy with what I see.

To move layers, get your layer palette active on your screen. If it isn't there, go to the icon that looks like a green and red sheet of paper overlapping (under Masks) and click on that. When it shows up on your screen, move your cursor up to layer palette and it will drop down. Move to the layer you want to move, click and drag to where you want it to be.

If you lower the opacity of a layer, all the layers beneath show through. I meant the layer with the texture on it. If you put a white layer beneath it, it will be lighter, but not see-through. To lower the opacity, go back to that layer thingy on your screen, find the layer you want to change, and on the right side there is a scale. Slide the scale to the left to lower the opacity. You can do it with solid colors, gifs, brushes, tubes, etc. too.

As to finding stuff to use, that's easy. Use your favorite browser and/or search engine and type in FREE gifs, brushes, tubes, backgrounds, clip art, etc. You might want to add PSP to some of them, like FREE PSP brushes. Most of the stuff here under the tuts and links have free stuff. Be sure to read the terms. Most of it is free for personal use. Not to be added to a collection or claimed as yours. The minute I see link back, I exit.

We are all still learning. I know that part of this would have been helped with a screen shot, but I haven't tackled that yet.

Mom2, screenshots with PSP are very easy, if you are working in PSP just hit your "print screen button" then open up a second PSP and go to "Edit... Paste as new image"  Crop to whatever you want to show and save as JPG..  Ollie

Ummm...Ollie? You don't need to open a secondary PSP, you don't even have to have PSP open at the time you take a screenshot...found out by accident when I took a shot, noticed I didn't have PSP open, openned it and the clipboard was all lit up, lol...and there was the shot I wanted.

I'm actually addicted to screenshots, lol...that's probably why I put up instruction pages at Click Here Pleez, lol, just because I could use pictures rather than verbal descriptions.

Anytime you wanna do a screenshot, press the circled key, (mine is located just to the right of the 'F12' key, top row of keyboard)...

Then go to PSP, or whatever graphic program is in your system, and the clipboard will be active{}, just click on it, and your screenshot will appear on the workspace for you to do will as you wish.

Same thing if you're already working in PSP and want a shot of what you're doing...hit the key, then the clipboard, and go for it.

Well now I feel really stupid. I thought it was going to be some long, involved process. I agree, seeing it is a whole lot easier than trying to explain it. Be prepared for screenshots, lots of them.
