Today I was tube huntin' and I was following a link, when I got to their site unknown to me, there was a spybot inserting itself into my computer. Spybots , gather information about you and sends it back to their host, who does... thats the question... what do they do with that information? Sometimes like myself, all you have to do is visit their site, and you have become a host for the spybot... kind of sounds like an infection doesnt it?? I am a private person, and the thought that someone is recording my activities without my knowledge gives me the creeps.. Ok Long story short.. (yeah right) Here is a link to a spybot search and destroy, I ran it and found 17 of them in my computer (yeeeech) another person I know had 193 (worse) If you do download it, make sure you do the first update, . This is not an ad for spybot search and destory. I will repeat myself... it gives me the creeps... kinda like somebody watching you thru the window at night but you cant see them. |

I use AdAware (free) from http://www.lavasoft.com everytime I get off the net, even if I've only been to 'group' sites. One of the worst ones I picked up couldn't be removed till I rebooted, some of them get in there deep. They're different from cookies, which are relatively benign...but it certainly jerks my chain that they make it past fire walls...what allows them in over a virus? And when are the viral developers gonna figure it out. Half the biological virus' out there have figured out cloning themselves as regular cells and slip past our immune systems unharmed & undetected. And why can't these people who create such anonimous atrosities turn their obviously high intelligence towards beneficial endeavours? Just a thought... |

OMG Ollie...I was readin' in PC World this morning about your Spybot Search & Destroy and they were as enthusiastic about it as you are, even though they promoted AdAware before...so thought I'd give it a try. As I said in the post above, I've used AdAware everytime I got off the net, lots of 'double click', and 'value' spyware found and dumped, but SpyBot found and cleaned up 219 spyware beasts still on my 'puter!!! I couldn't believe it! I've had my 'puter for one year, can you imagine if I had stuck with AdAware? I don't want to think about it, lol. And, before all this.....last week I got that AVG AntiVirus System, and they caught a trojan horse virus trying to sneak aboard. Can't help wondering if McAfee would have stopped it, and thankful I had AVG just in case. I'm not paying for McAfee, came with XP & was only for 90 days, but they're still up and running, but obviously only to an extent. Thanks for posting about SpyBot, and I hope everyone here goes and gets it. It's free and so far it hasn't messed up anything permanently, lol...the clearing of my start menu kinda spooked me, but it's loading up with my frequented programs again. Everyone, do yourself a big favor & click Ollie's link, your machine will run faster to boot! :o) |

Well, I got it downloaded on the second try. It found 49 in mine but what on earth do I do now? Some were problems in Explorer. Some were checkmarked, some weren't. I am afraid to shred them. Do I just leave them alone? "Help" didn't tell me, or I didn't understand if it did. The little pop-up that describes each entry was partway offscreen and I couldn't read everything on it. New programs drive me nuts. Annie |

Thanks, Ollie. I guess I zoned out. Didn't notice the "fix problems" button. Just did that after reading help for a long time. It took away a few of the topmost problems. I'll keep messing with it and may be able to figure it out in time. Annie |

I'm downloading it now. I hope I can figure out what to do with it once it's installed. I downloaded Ad-Aware before, ran it, and then didn't know what to do with all that information. I was afraid I would dump something I didn't want dumped. I hate computers. |

My sentiments exactly, Mom2, but what would we do without them? Annie |
