I am researching my husband's Williams and Dotson/Dodsons from Urbana area, and the Wisdom, Ethridge, Southard families from Louisburg area. All were settlers prior to the Civil War.

I am also interested in the John Howard-Mary Allison family from Urbana. He donated land for the Howard Cemetery, per my understanding, but is buried in Bartlett. He lived in Benton/Camden Counties around Climax Springs before the Civil War. There is a family story that he was shot and left for dead by bushwhackers, but he survived.

My primary interest at this time is James A. Williams who came to Missouri about 1857 from Grainger Co., TN. He had married there to Martha Dotson on June 18, 1846. I believe her father to have been Abner Dotson. He had land next to them in Dallas Co. according to an old plat book and was one entry away from them on the 1850 Grainger Co., TN census. Martha Dotson Williams died June 04, 1875 and James A. Williams married again to Mary A. Ferrel before the 1880 Dallas Co., Census. There were several Ferrel children living with them. Who was her first husband?

The Children of James A. Williams and Martha Dotson were:

2. i. SAMUEL WILLIAM4 WILLIAMS, b. November 11, 1848, Claiborne Co Tenn?; d. February 02, 1907, Urbana, Dallas Co. MO. He married ELIZA JAME ETHRIDGE January 22, 1874, daughter of WILLIAM ETHRIDGE and UNICEY SOUTHARD.

ii. NARCISSA WILLIAMS.

iii. PHEBY WILLIAMS.

iv. PHILLIP WILLIAMS, m. NAOMI E. JONES, March 02, 1871, Dallas County, MO.

v. JOHN A. WILLIAMS, m. HANAH C. RIGGS, December 31, 1876, Dallas County, MO.

vi. LUCINDA J. WILLIAMS, m. JOHN H. COWEN, October 07, 1875.

vii. DAVID BEELER WILLIAMS, m. IDA A. BARNHART.

viii. ELIZA E. WILLIAMS.

ix. MARTHA M. WILLIAMS.

x. MARGARET S. WILLIAMS.

xi. SARAH E. WILLIAMS.

I would like to fill in the information on who Narcissa, Pheby, Eliza E., Martha M. Margaret S. and Sarah E. Williams married. Also would like to correspond with any descendants of any of James A. Williams' children. My husband is descended from Samuel William Williams and Eliza Jane Ethridge so I have a little knowledge of that line, but not much. Would like to hear from others that can fill in their story.

Here is Samuel Williams obituary from the Buffalo Reflex:

From Buffalo Reflex Feb 7, 1907
Died, at his home at Urbana, Missouri, at 11 o'clock Saturday, Feb 2 after six days illness from pneumonia Sam'l Williams, aged about 60 years. Mr. Williams had many friends here who were much surprised and grieved by news of his death, but few having learned of his illness. He leaves a widow, eight children,--four boys and four girls-and numerous other relatives to whom we offer sympathy. Funeral services were conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which order he was a devoted and worthy member, at New Hope, ten miles north of Buffalo, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

In same issue:
Messrs. J. A. Bonner and W. P. Bass of this city, attended the funeral of Sam'l Williams at New Hope Sunday.

Hoping to hear from some of my husband's cousins.

Janice Severns

Janice,

I have a James Southard in my database. He married Ethalinda Lindsey. They had two children that I know of: Rachel E. Southard (b. 19 July, 1857, d. 5 Aug 1932) and Sara A. Southard (b. April 1852, d. after 1930). Rachel married William H. Alford on 13 Nov. 1876. Do any of these names help you? If so, I may be able to provide more information.

Mike, In my records, James Southard and Ethelinda Lindsey had a total of 10 children before her death in 1878.
Nancy b.1844-William b.1847-Martha b.1849-Margaret b.1849(twins?)Sarah b.1852-Mary Jane b.1854(my ancestor)-Rachel b.1857-Frances b.1861-Hannah b.1863 and Susan b.1867.
His second marriage to Caroline Luttrell was childless, probably because he was 55 and she was 40 when they got married. I don't have any information on Caroline Luttrell, does anyone else? Thanks.

I have the dates for William and Francis as you say they are, only I have Francis's DOB about 4 years before she was actually born, so thank you for correcting it so I can fix my records. I will send you my line from Mary Jane Southard who was the 6th child of James and Ethalinda,  who married George Arnold on down to me, Phyllis Parker Robinette. It might not be until Thursday before I can get it to you tho.

Jonathan Ferrell of Dallas county?)
Notes for JAMES A WILLIAMS:
Per a reply to me on a letter of enquiry written in 1975 Pete Vaughn of Vaughn's Funeral Home in
Urbana said that as best as he could find out James A. and Martha Williams were born in Claiborne
Co., Tennessee. I now believe that this is wrong and they were borne in Grainger Co, TN across the
Clinch River from Claiborne Co., TN
They are buried. New Hope Cemetary, Louisburg, Dallas Co. MO

Searching for James Williams born 1825 Grainger County, TN. He moved to Dallas county MO.James was
married to Mary A. and is listed with these children on the 1880 Dallas Co. Census as follows:
David Wiliams 19, Elisa E. 16, Martha 14, Margaret L. 11 and Sarah E. 6. For some reason living in
this same household were the following Ferrel childern-Margaret 14, Emry C. H. 9, Sida 6, James 4,
and Lilla 3 months. Any information would be helpful. I need to know who James Williams parents
were. Thanks. Jan

Poster: Jan
Is it a coincidence that Ida Barnhart that married David Williams had a brother named Walter
Greenberry Barnhart and Anna Williams (married to Elias Williams) father was Green Berry Williams?
I find it interesting that the name Greenberry was used as a middle name. Both families had
connections to Dallas Co. MO. My James A. Williams was married to Martha Dodson and was the father of
the David Williams mentioned above. Thanks for any help making sense of this and a possible link. I
have been unable to find out who James Williams parents were. On an old handwritten chart passed
down it shows Elias and Ann listed as parents to James but a question mark is penciled in beside
the names.

Does anyone know why the following children Margaret, Emry C., Sida, James C., and Lilla Ferrel,
are on the 1880 Dallas CO MO census with James M.(A) Williams and Mary A. Williams. I know that
this was a second marriage for James. But I can't find these children listed any where else. Was Mary

were all born in MO.
