Oyster Day - Londoners believe that if you eat an oyster today you will not want
for money all year. This sentiment is expressed in the following rhyme from
Hone's Every-Day Book, published in 1829, which describes the mad dash to
Billingsgate where the fish market was located:
Greengrocers rise at dawn of sun
August the fifth - come haste away
To Billingsgate the thousands run
To Oyster Day! To Oyster Day!
Actually in England, the legal close season for oysters was 15 June to 4 August
so this was actually the day after oyster season closed. But the common saying
is that one should never eat oysters in months without an R, which would include
August, as well as June and July.

About Doris: The daughter of Oceanus, this Grecian Sea Goddess is associated
with the sea's gifts and its wealth. She joins in today's festivities by
bringing an abundance
of seafood to nourish the body, as well as spiritual sustenance to fulfill our
souls.
To Do Today: The Fairhope Jubilee takes place in Mobile Bay, Alabama, sometime
in August
when there's an overcast sky, an easterly wind, and a rising tide. When these
three factors
are in place an odd phenomenon occurs: bottom-dwelling fish get trapped between
the shore
and low-oxygen water. So people rush out with any containers they can find and
gather up
Doris's plenty! For us, this equates to gathering up the sea's plenty
figuratively, perhaps by
having fish for dinner. Remember to thank Doris as you eat so that you
internalize her providence.
To make a Doris charm that will draw abundance into any area of your life in
need, find a seashell,
a tumbled sea stone, or something similar that comes from the ocean. Place the
token in seawater
for three hours by a waxing moon so that abundance will grow like the moon.

Crone's Corner - Why Do Women Bleed Together?

Most women have either heard of or experienced the phenomenon of bleeding in
synch
with their fellow sisters. But what causes it? And how does it affect your
fertility?
There is very little scientific research on this topic so it is difficult to
arrive at one definitive
answer. It is probably a combination of factors that has changed and evolved
over the centuries.
Think back to when we lived tribally thousands of years ago with no artificial
lighting. In these
natural surroundings it was highly probable that women ovulated together on the
full moon
and bled on the dark moon. Thus they usually gave birth at the Full moon,
creating more
individuals with this particular lunar fertility blueprint.
This model for the menstrual cycle is traditionally offered as the most common
because
it was the norm for thousands of years. I speak of this in the Fertility Freedom
ebook,
the theory that this model of cycling offers the most positive chances for
physical fertility
based on the rising and falling energy of the moon throughout the month.
But of course these days, we live in the world of artificial light. We no longer
are born just on
Full moons - but on every phase and degree in the whole cycle. What effect does
menstrual
synchrony have on our own personal lunar blueprint? If your natural lunar
fertile time is the first
quarter what happens when you start getting in synch with women who ovulate at
the third quarter?
Using the theories of lunar fertility - you would have two fertile times a month
instead of one. In this
way synchronization to other women may not be of benefit. But what if you are
having trouble
conceiving or suffer irregularity? Hanging out with pregnant women or
synchronizing to regular
women could have positive effects on your cycle outweighing the benefit of being
in tune to your
own individual rhythm.
Women also cycled together for the benefit of the tribe. Consider the practice
of the Moonhut in
some native cultures. At bleeding, women would gather together away from other
members of the
tribe to meditate, pray and receive guidance. Women doing this work together
would have made
this time more powerful due to their combined collective energy. When their
bleeding was over,
these women would return to the tribe and offer guidance and advice based on
their experiences.
In this case it was more powerful for women to cycle together.
Of course in modern society we live in a less tribally and more isolated way.
Women now often
live in nuclear families and certainly don't seem to have the experience with
extended family/tribal
living that they used to. In some ways our survival is less dependant upon the
women around us
than the men around us.
These are just a few possible thoughts about why we synchronies.

The Goddess is not a new invention, a contemporary concept that expresses modern
women's need for self-actualization. No, she is a primeval force that has been
recognized for thousands of years, perhaps longer. There is some evidence
suggesting that humans recognized the divine in female long before they invented
a god who wore a male body.
How, then, did we lose her? She was, in fact, never lost. The cosmic or
archetypal feminine remained with us, hidden in texts like that above, spoken by
the biblical Wisdom and in images such as that of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the
fairy-tale witch. Whether the Goddess exists beyond human minds, she is so
deeply rooted in us that we will never be without her.
