Full Moon in Leo
Thursday, February 1, 2007
9:45pm PST
12°  59'

Leo rules creative self-actualization, personal power, the beauty and magnetism of personal vision, and romantic love. So this year, the Full Moon of the artist, the lover, and the leader is the focal planet of a powerful yod that includes Uranus (uniqueness and originality) in Pisces (music, film, fantasy, spiritual growth) and Mars (sexuality and action) in Capricorn (achievement and hard work). For those of you who have been working on your goals since the New Moon in Capricorn, the Leo Full Moon provides an intense energetic field with which to release your intentions for achievement out to the world. It will be like strapping on a spiritual jet engine. Since Leo is a fire sign, use fire in your ritual. Have the artist in you create a representation of the goals you have been working on. Then burn it in a fire under the bright light of the Leo Full Moon. Remember to handle fire with care by containing it in a fireplace, cauldron or fire ring. After the fire has burned down completely (you might have to wait until morning) take the spent ash and spread it to the four winds, calling in the power of each direction to aid your commitment to success and achievement.

Yods represent frustrated energy. The focal planet (Moon) is the mechanism by which that energy can be released. The two planets in sextile (Uranus and Mars) represent the opportunity to activate that energy, and the two inconjunctions to the focal planet represent that which must be nurtured (Uranus) and what must be sacrificed (Mars). So let's do a little deconstruction of this yod. Moon in Leo represents an unfettered, total surrender into one's personal vision self-actualized through the creative force. Uranus in Pisces symbolizes the fearlessness with which we must embrace the creative force in order to harness its incomprehensible power to awaken. Mars in Capricorn is a commitment to action even in the face of tremendous odds and intense fear. Often Capricorn can incapacitate the wild energy of Mars because it so clearly sees its own limitations. This is what must be sacrificed. You have had two weeks to think through those limitations and now the pure bliss of Uranus in Pisces needs to be nurtured in order to release the creative force for the highest good of all beings. Do take this very seriously as you plan your ritual work for this New Moon.

Don't worry so much about retrograde Saturn in Leo. Unbounded, radically inventive Mercury and Neptune in Aquarius will oppose and counteract Saturn's slow descent. Be extremely careful if you think of using mind-altering substances on this night. With Chiron, Sun, Mercury and Neptune in Aquarius, your mind will be limitless and deeply connected to all the subtle realms. Drugs and alcohol will only block clear experience of these profoundly deep states of mind.

Okay, let's do a little more about Leo natives (who love the attention anyway!) These people are usually standouts and are always memorable. Leo has a real sense of specialness and perceives all it creates as gifts bestowed upon the rest of us in the name of love and life. Well, honestly is there really any other reason to do much in this world? Leo is the artist, the charismatic leader, the Hollywood star, the sex symbol, the incurable romantic and the Don Juan/Juanita of the zodiac.

Even for us commoners, something quite dramatic and amazingly beautiful is bound to happen under a Leo Full Moon. This is the night to let go of worrying about the world for a few hours (I know it's hard right now) and give in to romanticism in all its forms. This is a Full Moon for making love, making art, and making merry. With Venus and Uranus in Pisces, lovemaking on this night will be a deeply surrendering and completely merging experience. Plan an intimate evening with your partner; one that revolves around attending to deepening the experience of shared sensual pleasure in all its forms. Passion and desire are at all time high on this night, so use it to rekindle the flame of love in your relationship. Believe me Valentine's Day has nothing on a Leo Full Moon. So pull out all the stops for the one you love. If you are looking for love, this is the night to take a chance and put yourself out there. Anything can happen under the influence of this most romantic of Moons.

Watch out though, the Full Moon in Leo tends to bring out our vanity, especially when it is trine Jupiter in Sagittarius. Its energy is focused on self and self-pleasure, and may tempt us all to indulge in the non-necessities of life that make us feel beautiful and pampered. Leo is not very good at feeling guilty about life's luxuries. "I am worth it" belongs to Leo consciousness. Scheduling a massage, changing hairstyle, or buying a sexy new outfit may seem like the solution to all your problems on this Full Moon. Unfortunately, frivolousness and extravagance can be a big hook on a Leo Full Moon: especially with Uranus and Venus in Pisces demanding that we all do something radically different to look beautiful! The idea that we can really feel better about ourselves by buying something or changing our appearance is fraught with danger, and is unfortunately is a large part of the belief system of a consumerist society. Though it will be hard, be mindful that you are not indulging a shopping addiction.

For those of you who are creative types, don't be surprised if you feel like being left alone in the studio all day and night, especially with Venus in deeply internal Pisces. This is a Full Moon of great inspiration and should not be wasted. If you have been suffering with creative blocks, the Leo Full Moon and all these planets in Aquarius will give you the energy to break free of inertia and get into action. If it doesn't, you might reconsider your project or direction. Maybe it's just not the right one.

If you prefer something more social, invite a bunch of friends to go out and have some fun seeing and being seen. Leo loves to be the center of attention, so get out there and shine! It's a great night to support the arts; so go see a play or hear some music. If you are up on that stage, be prepared for a very dramatic and inspiring performance. All this Aquarius and Pisces energy would be great for bringing together fun and support of a good cause.

This year the Leo Full Moon will be opposite Chiron, Neptune, Sun, and Mercury in Aquarius. Some think that Aquarius and Leo are diametrically opposed to one another. But I find their synergistic and interdependent relationship unique among the signs. Aquarius demands radical change, which cannot be accomplished without Leo's talents: unwavering self-belief in one's personal vision and true leadership. Leo demands creativity and caring, which requires the Aquarian rejection of personal glorification in favor of global identification. When balanced, the Leo/Aquarius polarity works hand in hand to further the evolution of human civilization. Corruption, greed and suffering only exist when these energies lack equilibrium.

The Leo Full Moon assures us all that we have great personal power and we must learn to use it judiciously. This is the Full Moon to try on the role of leader. If you have wanted to come out front with your great ideas, this is the time to try. The connection with ego identity is strong on this Full Moon. Leo understands how much power it can wield, and will never shy away from using this knowledge to accomplish even the most outrageous goals. Forget the stereotypical Leo: a partygoer dancing with a lampshade on their head. Instead, think of showing up with a serious commitment to who you are and not backing down for anything.

Leo is total self-belief and it uses total commitment to gain success and glory. Think of Madonna (Sun in Leo); she is a powerful presence who insists upon owning her vision and maintaining total control of the product. As we say in Silicon Valley, "it's all about believing your own marketing." Yes, of course there is a dark side to power and glory. We all know that an inflated ego creates the right conditions for abuses of power. But power used wisely can be of great benefit to all. The beauty of Leo is how much it truly cares about others, and since this is a Full Moon, let's get into a celebratory space and bask in the light of Leo's positive qualities.

This is the most dramatic, elegant and fun Full Moon of the year. So get out and enjoy the fireworks!

Imbolc Gateway

Listen. Beneath the icy glow of the Snow Moon, there is a stirring deep within the Earth, hushed, nearly imperceptible.

On the eve of Imbolc, the Full Moon rises in the east tonight as Venus graces the western sky. A new consciousness is growing deep within the womb of Mother Earth. Listen.

The hopes and dreams of a people are gestating. Consciousness is seeded, germinating, taking root. Awaken.

Tonight's Full Moon coincides with the cross-quarter gateway of Imbolc, creating a rare and awesome portal of manifestation. One of the four Greater Sabbats in the solar year, Imbolc is the mid-point between the December Solstice and March Equinox. The first stirrings of new life are felt deep within the belly of the Mother. We celebrate new beginnings.

A lunar cycle rarely coincides so precisely with a Sabbat. We are blessed. Sun, Moon and Earth are suspended in perfect balance. This is a culmination, and a turning point. Thoughts, prayer and intention are magnified exponentially for the next five days. Choose wisely.

Traditionally we celebrate both the Full Moon and the Sabbats with ritual. Honor what has come to fruition in your life, in your home and community. Create with intent as we move toward the birthing at Equinox.

Listen. Attune to the natural rhythms of creation. Embody the Divine.

Current Influences

The Goddess is initiated this weekend. The Full Moon rises tonight as the Imbolc gateway opens. Commune with the sacred goddesses - the Earth, the Moon and Venus, evening star. Connect with the feminine aspect of creation.

Notice your powers of manifestation. Creativity, intuitive awareness and healing abilities are heightened. Something is germinating now that will bloom when the Sun moves into Aries at the Vernal Equinox on March 20.

Between now and then, Mercury Retrograde will slow down the action for three weeks, and we'll experience intense transformational energies with an eclipse series in March. Rest up now. A reconfiguration is happening deep within. Once the Equinox arrives, the changes will manifest rapidly and express in the outer forms of our lives.

Leo/Aquarius Full Moon - February 1/2 - 9:45 PM PST February 1; 12:45 AM EST February 2; 5:45 AM GMT February 2

All Full Moons are oppositions of the Sun and Moon, creating a tension that (hopefully) leads to healing and resolution. On the Leo/Aquarius axis, a focus on the self is balanced by the needs of the collective. With the Moon in Leo, you may feel especially sensitive and creative. The Sun is joined in Aquarius by Chiron, Neptune and Mercury, creating a stellium that keeps us focused on humanitarian causes and ideals. Mars in Capricorn and Uranus in Pisces form a yod with the Leo Moon. Sudden insights, flashes of inspiration, passion and courage are possible. Follow your dreams!

Imbolc - February 2 (traditional); February 4 (zodiacal)

In the solar year, the four cross-quarters are points of greatest momentum and release of power. In Wiccan tradition, they are the Greater Sabbats (compared to the Lesser Sabbats - the solstices and equinoxes). The cross-quarters are special alignments of Sun, Earth and Moon that create powerful energetic portals and manifest as seasonal changes. At Imbolc, we notice the first signs of spring with longer days and warmer temperatures, even though winter blasts are still likely in the Northern Hemisphere. New life begins to stir beneath the Earth's surface. Hope is renewed.

Venus in Pisces - Conjunct Uranus February 7; Square Jupiter February 9; Square Pluto February 19

The Goddess Initiation continues through February as Venus dances with the power planets Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto on her journey through the watery realms of Pisces. This is a call to emotional maturity. It's time to grow up, release patterns of addiction and codependency. Reconfigure or complete those relationships that aren't serving your spiritual and emotional evolution. Focus on your relationship with the Divine. Watch for sudden changes in relationships and flashes of insight into the true nature of Love.

Mercury Retrograde - February 13-March 7

From our vantage point on Earth, Messenger Mercury appears to change direction and move backward through the sky for about three weeks several times a year. Mercury's retrograde periods are times for reflection, retreat and re-evaluation. Mercury rules communication and transportation, so have your car and computer serviced, double-check appointments, and complete unfinished business instead of launching new projects or signing contracts. You'll get the go-ahead for new business when Mercury stations direct on March 7.
