The Tarot

Within this workshop we will all learn about the Tarot. I may still be learning the cards But I have a passion for them and so I will pass on my knowledge of the cards to You. Here we will be Studying the Tarot using the Rider Waite Deck. I am using this deck because I believe it is one of the best decks to start with. It has a lot of history behind it, a lot of energy behind it and Most courses out there Use this deck so It will be easy for anyone to find more information about the cards if you seek to further your studies.

There are 78 cards in the Tarot deck, 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Major arcana represent Big events in ones life, Major Turning points while the Minor Arcana represents the little things that help us on our way, that get us to the Major spots in our life.

So a few things that will Really help with the study of the cards.

 • Card of the Day/Week- Choose a card to study either for the day, or week, I suggest at least studying the card for a few days if You don’t want to study it for a week. This will let you take in the cards energy, and to get a better feel for it. Look at the card, study its picture, the symbolism, how does it make you feel, what thoughts come to your head when you see this card, try to pin point the card in your daily routine. See if it came up in your work.
 • Meditation- Choose the card you will be working with *Card of the Day/Week*, Meditate with it, See what comes to your mind, pay attention to everything while in meditation and by doing this, it will help you to understand the characteristics of the card on a deeper level.
 • Tarot Journal- Start a Tarot journal, keep track of the time, date, emotions, weather all of it and put it in your tarot journal, Write the card you chose for the day or week down and Keep track of all you notice about it, how it makes you feel, what Colors stand out, what symbols call to you more then others, Pick apart the card you chose to work with, write your thoughts on it, write down what you got from your meditations with the card, write it all here in your Tarot Journal.

All of these will help you to understand the Tarot, it will better us as readers and Students to the Tarot.

The first card we study will be the Fool. I will post here what a good friend of mine had to say about the Fool card, She took a lot of what I have discussed with her about the card and what She knows about the card and put it into this.

The Fool represents true innocence, and by that I don’t mean without guilt, but rather a freedom and total openness to life. A lack of fear that only comes from total faith in your own instinctive self. The Fool is movement, the leap through life. For those willing to take the leap, it can bring happiness, knowledge, a liberation. He sees no difference between possibility and reality. The Fool is symbolic of the human spirit at the beginning of the great journey of life. The Fool stands poised to undertake the supreme adventure of his life. The journey he represents is spiritual in nature, and one which can be undertaken at any age.

He has the Number 0.

0 means no hopes and fears, he expects nothing, plans for nothing, and responds to the immediate situation, the here and now. 0 is not strictly a number. It represents the absence of any specific number therefore, it’s safe to say, that it contains all numbers within itself. This symbolises potentiality. All things are possible to someone who is already willing to go in any direction.

The white dog, again, symbolises the fools innocence. Bounding happily along by his heels, unaware of the danger he is on from the cliff.
The dog, to me, symbolises the forces of nature, the animal instinct in man, of which the Fool, in his purity, is totally unaware. Deny your inner self and it becomes ferocious but obey it and it becomes calm.

Roses symbolise passion, but white, purity. It’s a symbol of the Fools total unconsciousness of his actions, total belief in himself and his actions. It is a point to note, that the White Rose, was also the Golden Dawns symbol of Silence.

This bag, carries his experiences, he is not stupid, and does not throw them away, but rather carries them around, learning from them. They do not control him, he is not mindless. The bag is closed, as is the path to the memories contained within. He is aware of previous mistakes, but does not intend to relive them.

A staff is a magical symbol of power. Similar to a wand. He carries his power, so openly, that we do not see it, hiding it in the open. His staff is Black, for the innocent Fool, the spirit force remains always there, always available, as he is not consciously directing it. It is thrown casually over his shoulder. The Staff is coloured darkly, black, a colour which leads us to believe of evil, or negation in life. I see it as a symbol of infinite energy, a way to all things possible. If we fear the blackness we fear the deep unconscious of the source of life itself.

The red robe, again a symbol of the Fools passion. The ten patterns on his robe, show the alignment with the Ten Sephiroth depicted on the Qabalistic tree of life, It shows an understanding of life, a passion for life, a spiritual ascent and descent along its branches. The neckline of his robe contains a triple flame, the representation of Kether, the beginning of the tree of life, a new journey awaits.

The Belt around his waist, has 12 knots around it, counting those hidden from view. This symbolises the 12 signs of the Zodiac or, the 12 basic types of a persona. It is showing that the Fool, could become anyone.
He wears a laurel wreath on his head, with what resembles the feather of Maat, Egyptian goddess of justice and truth, sticking out proudly from it. The feather could be representative of a victory. His journey leads him on a voyage of discovery, through truth, to the outcome, and reason for his quest. Knowledge. Wisdom.

The Sun on the card is situated in the North East, and is rising. This symbolises spiritual awareness, growth. It shines with a pure white light, stating that the Fool is guided with a higher Wisdom, higher intellect, his journey is the adventure of the descent of spiritual light in a material world.

The Fool shows a complete faith that life is good and worthy of his trust.
Keep your faith and trust in your natural instincts. Believe in yourself.
At his best,The Fool symbolizes the inner spirit of creative nonconformity, adventure, and a desire for wisdom. At all times, he represents the potential to be a complete and independent person with fearless originality.

So Tell me what the Fool represents to you, What you see him/her to be? Lets pick apart this card. When first looking at the card what do you get? What impressions, What colors stand out why do you think they call to you? Now that you have a basic understanding for the card, please share here what you think also, Remember the Cards speak to us differently, so we may have different answers for the same card and none of them are wrong, they are all correct.

To me thsi is the wild card of the deck. When I ask a question that realy can't be answered or, if I already know the answer but am denying it, the fool is there to lead me on some crazy adventure and give up expectations and a sort of "I need to know how this will work out..." attitude. When i was working with cartomancy I used both the jokers in my deck and had them act as the fool in the tarot deck. On some spreads, the fool would even appear twice to me. I'm still a bit stubborn but know it is asking me to have faith.

The High Priestess

Ok this card to me screams of Will. Strength and the ability to Balance all in life. A strong willed, spiritual person.

Ok when I first look at this card I notice:

The Colors: The colors of the ocean, Blues, Whites, Black, Grays... But not just that it has a bit of vibrant colors also behind the High priestess and at her foot entwining with what’s in front of her.

I notice The Pillars on either side of Her, One Tall and Black with the Letter B *what does the Letter B in this picture stand for? What does it mean to you? Its there and has meaning but what?

The other Pillar White/grayish with the Letter J, Its set behind the high priestess a bit more then the other pillar, The Black Pillar is more so in synch with her, what does that mean?

Now For the Veil behind the high priestess, what is it covering? There are things unseen behind her, yet I believe she Knows what’s behind her. Its Full of Vibrant colors and Earthly Energy. What do you feel this Veil is here for? What does it say to you?

Now for the High Priestess, She sits on her throne, straight up, Not timid, not fearing, just there Looking straight out but seeing farther then time itself. She is full of Divine energy and reminds me of the oracle of Delphi and the Prophets. She has her Crown, With the Goddess symbol what does this mean to you? Her Chest has the Cross, she holds The Torah in her Right hand, her gown flows like water *emotions, spirituality* to the grown and intertwined with it is the crescent moon looking upwards to the High Priestess.

I see the High Priestess as a female archetype

To me, she represents the deep, subtle aspect of the female, that of the dark, mysterious and the hidden. The psychic force, the unconscious, passivity and the wisdom gained though it. The High Priestess signifies wisdom at its deepest level.

Within her hands she holds the Tora, a document of insight, wisdom and integrity, Although the scroll is rolled up and partly concealed, it signifies a higher knowledge, one which is unseen to us in our normal state, but comes to us via meditation and dreams. She knows an inner truth though unconscious and inexpressible.

(Eg. We all know who we are and what we are inside, but sometimes we conceal ourselves as it is hard explaining it to others)

Behind the veil at her back is an expanse of water. The pool signifies the truths hidden away, our most darkest secrets, hidden, under a smooth surface. When we are still and peaceful during meditation, we are able to go beyond the veil and find the answers to our questions, thus we gain insight and understanding.

She sits between the pillars of light and dark, Mercy and Judgement, Boaz and Jachin, is not seduced in either direction but passive, letting the opposites carry on around her. She is harmony. She is sure of her position as she holds connection between the material and the spiritual.

Upon her head is the Triple Crown, the symbol of the three phases of the moon, Waxing, Waning and full. This signifies her role within the moon’s cycle. The moon signifies, for many, a form of purity, ruling the tides of the unconscious.

She is clothed in a white inner robe to symbolise her purity, and the blue flowing robe connects to the virginal Mother Mary, The one pure daughter, who is pictured simultaneously as Mother, Wife and Daughter.

feel that the High Priestess shows us that we have more than one side, we have hidden depth which only the very few recognise. She deals with the mysteries of life. The things we don’t know and the things that we can’t know.

She indicates a sense of darkness that may be a fear in our own lives.

Her passivity should allow us to think that a passive withdrawal from our own lives could only cause enrichment, allowing our unconscious to become foremost, as our inner minds and thoughts awaken.

However, there is another way of looking upon the High Priestess,

The crown she wears is worth looking into as it suggests the Egyptian Goddess Hathor, a most significant person. Isis also wears this crown, so sometimes, The High Priestess is called the Isis of the Tarot.

But if look a bit more closely at the veil you see it for what it is.
This is the Tree of Life of the Qabalah. Look at the way the Pomegranates are laid out, exactly the same as the Tree of life.

So now the High Priestess takes on a higher hidden significance. She herself is the Tree of Life, the giver of life. She is the central pillar of the 3 pillars in the Qabalah Tree of Life. Her fecundity is assured as she is tree, woman, giver and securer of the "Law" The Tora, as well as the guardian of the portal, the entrance between the pillars.
Life gets by no one except through her. She is the gate, she is the portal, and she is the vehicle of life.
This is what the Tarot High Priestess is symbolizing. Woman is the tree of life, from which eternal Divine seeds are birthed and live. Pomegranates are symbols of fertility, which aptly fits the Goddess as a Fertility Goddess of Life...
The pomegranates on the veil behind the High Priestess on the Tarot Card are the eternal and unending seeds of the Divine awaiting birth through the Heavenly Mother, the High Priestess.

The Two Pillars of Boaz and Jachin.

King Solomon of Judea, decided to build a Temple to house the Ark of the Covenant. The Hebrew People, at this time, were nomads living in tents, while their neighbors, Tyre, had been a rich and prosperous city for over two hundred years. Recognizing the Tyrians?advancement in architecture, Solomon appealed to their greater talents to build his temple. Hiram, the architect sent by the King of Tyre , constructed a pair of hollow bronze pillars that stood on the outer entrance to Solomon’s temple, one finished in silver and the other in gold . The Silver Pillar which stood in the North, become known as Boaz, and represented a Pillar of smoke, which to the Hebrews meant Strength. Standing in the south, the pillar of gold represented the pillar of fire and was called Jachin, or Jakin, which signifies establishment. When the temple was built the Hebrews stopped their wanderings and became permanently established.

The two pillars are often depicted as sort of gateway to hidden knowledge, that allows the balance between opposite forces. In this weeks study card, you see the High Priestess sitting on a cube like seat, between the light and dark colored pillars of Boaz and Jachin. It is appoint of notice though that the Passive and mysterious Boaz is colored Dark, while the active and judgmental Jachin is colored white, while the letters carry the reverse colors, a white B and a black J. This is to signify that duality is an illusion and each extreme carries the other embedded within it. The High Priestess represents the sum of esoteric knowledge, the balance between extremes, and the creative force in manifestation. The black column represents the negative life force, and the white column represents the positive life force. The pillar of Jachin represent the solar, masculine, active, positive, expansive principle of light; the pillar of Boaz represents the lunar, female, passive, negative, containing principle of darkness.

This is why I think the dark Pillar of Boaz seems to be more ‘In Synch?with her.

The fact that the pillars differ in color indicates that they are identical in their essence and differ only in appearance, just as one universal consciousness is present in all things and differs only in its physical manifestations. The pillars represent pairs of opposites: good and evil, life and death, light and darkness, essence and substance, spirit and matter, heat and cold, man and woman, reason and faith, authority and liberty, right and duty, harmony and discord, initiative and resistance, etc The idea of duality is also represented by the different architectural styles of the pillars, the pillar representing Joachim being Doric, and the pillar representing Boaz being Corinthian.

Astronomically they represent the equinoxes of summer and winter.

What do you think? What other symbolism in the card do you see? Are there any other certain cards that will come in a reading that you do with her that will mean a set thing for you? Let’s discuss this.
