I'm just getting started with insulin, after being a diabetic for seven years. All of a sudden, I started getting reactions from Metformin, and my sugars went sky high, and pills (metformin, gluconorm and actos), diet and exercise were doing nothing to help.
I'm on Levemir and Novorapid, started on the former a month ago and the latter a week ago. When the doctor first talked about putting me on insulin, I had a syringe in mind, but I love the Novolin pen 4, though I've found a couple of spots that really hurt for injections. We're still working on getting my dosages right.
I have actually found the hardest part trying to get used to injecting in public places, like my Rotary meetings. I'm rather self-conscious.
I'd love to hear any stories about getting started on insulin.

Greetings, Another newbie injector here. I just started yesterday. Doc put me on novalin injections twice a day. Diabetes has managed to cure me of my needle phobia. Amazing what you can do when you have to. |

Good day, Rev, I'm amazed how quickly I went from having to close my eyes to do my shots to just sticking myself when I sat down to eat. I've been sticking since September, and now it's really old hat. In fact, I'm at a conference, and I'm surprised how many people find it strange that it doesn't bother me to do all the needle sticks, but except on those rare occasions that I hit a nerve, I really don't feel it. I'm also amazed how much difference being on insulin made, once I got my doses right--more energy, and feeling generally better. Hoping you figure out your numbers soon. Jim |
