Hello I am a hyper glycimic. I was hypo when I was younger, And Now I am hyper. I have 2 grand parents on both sides with diabetes and my father has it. With in the last few months I have been having alot of problems with it. I have been getting so unbeliably angry whenever I need to eat, Which seems to be about every 2 hours. Now I haven't been checked in over 4 yearsfor diabetes, however my ob said I need to get rechecked. I don't currently have insurance and I plan to get insurance in 2 months. I am worried that i might have diabetes now.. I've been so sick. I was gestational diabetic with my daughter, and I am worried I'll have bad complications trying to have another child with regular diabetes. My daughter has a messed up back from being 23 inchs long in a mother of 5 ft and I was 95 pounds before I had her. my hips couldn't spread to make her fit and she had lots of problems being delivered. She almost died. I 2 months ago accidently got pregant and we lost the baby. I really wanted that baby even though it was an accident so my husband and I want to try again in about 6 months. I just finished college and am starting new job with insurance. but I'm scared I not going to be able to full term a baby. I also have no idea after reading some of your posts what it is that I should be eating and what I shouldn't. I have been for the last 5 weeks basiclly just eating green beans, cheese and steak cause a friend of mine told me that i need alot of protein.
I want to start getting my body as heatlthy as I can before I try to concieve again. Please give me some helpful hints on how to make my self healthier and prepare my body for a baby. Also is it dangerous to have a baby with a diabetic mother could it kill me?
Oh one last question sorry...  What are the symptoms of diabetes?
please help I'm really scared

It's me again....
I just wanted to ask alittle more.. When I was pregant with my daughter 6 years ago I was diagnoised with gestational diabetes, 2 questions one does that mean for sure i'll get it again? also could all the problems I had been helped if my doctor would have checked my blood sugars more that just that once or told me too. I passed out 4 times when I was pregnant. I was just a child when I was pregant with my first daughter (18) no offence to anyone but i had no clue how to take care of my self. noone told me what to do for my gestational diabetes then. And I a permently messed up because of my daughters extreamly large size. Also is there anything I need to worry about with my daughter now or later in life due to my gestational diabetes? so should I get a new ob before having another child? was some of these complications preventable?

let me try this again. hi and welcome to our family. Be aware that we can not give medical advice. The best place for that is the doc's office. I am sorry about the lost of your baby. That is a terrible thing to go thru.

Now to your questions: I don't feel very qualify to answer because i have never experience what you have but the first thing I would do is purchase a meter and some strips. Wal-Mart has a very low cost one and take reading 4 times a day. Make the first one everyday a fasting one. then the other 3 could be before meals or after meals. Just to get a baseline to give to your doc. Reading should be 80-120 pre-meal and less than 140 2 hours after a meal.

symptoms of diabetes: excessive thirst, excessive urination, muscle aches, lack of energy, sweating, dizziness and some people have experienced chest pains.

A risk factor for diabetes is having a child over 8 lbs, family history, over weight.

Yuo can change all of that or at least keep the wolf away from the door if you change your diet. Eat a balanced diet, be careful of carbs and exercise. Just because you have one type doesn't mean you will automatically get the other. Just learn to take care of yourself.

First off you need to be checked by a doc to see if you do have diabetes, second you need to see a nutrionist to figure out an eating plan that suits you, and third, no, just because you had gestational diabetes with one pregnancy, doesn't mean you will again....but you need to be checked before you become pregnant and do let your doc know you are wanting to get pregnant, pregnant women should not be taking oral diabetes meds, they need insulin, this doesn't mean you can't switch to oral meds once you deliver though...do this now, don't wait...don't wait for insurance, check for public clinic or call and see if the clinic maybe has a reduced rate for people without insurance...some do...

I agree with both Cora nd Voni
CHeck with our doctor as soon as you can.  He or she can advise you.  I was hypoaglocemic for years and then was diagnosed with diabetes. Of course that doesn't mean all hypoglocemics will be diagnosed the same later on.  Please feel free to keep coming here to ask questions, or just chat

Hi there,

You can definitely have a healthy baby and pregnancy while being diabetic...I am living proof as I just gave birth.  I agree with the others that you need to get checked by a physician and buying a glucose meter is a good idea.  The trick to having a healthy baby while diabetic is having tight control of your diabetes for at least 6 months before you get pregnant and during your pregnancy.  Your sugars need to be optimal when you get pregnant as that is when it is critical for the baby's development.  I went on the insulin pump when I decided to get pregnant as it allowed for better control with my diabetes.  I'm a type one and didn't have gestational.  You definitely have to watch what you eat.  The funny thing is that while pregnant the whole food thing changes.  For the first 3-4 months I could follow my regular diet but as time went on there were certain foods I could no longer eat or only eat them at certain times of the days.  I felt like I could hardly eat anything towards the end but it was really a see as you go type thing.  As far as you getting diabetes later on in life because you had gestational diabetes, it's not a gaurantee that you'll get type 2 diabetes but you are at a much higher risk of developing type 2.  I believe you have something like a 50% chance of developing it later on in life.  I learned this in all my baby classes and the nutritional class I took for diabetics who were pregnant.  You'll have to see an OB specialist if you are diabetic or get gestational diabetes and you must check your sugars at least 4 times a day.  I checked my sugars at least 7 times a day...before and after every meal and before I went to bed.  Sure it's not the most convenient thing to do but it helps to ensure a healthy baby and pregnancy and it is well worth it!  Hope I could help some.  If you have any questions feel free to email me or post again.  Wish you luck.

Please br careful not to get pregnant until you've seen a doctor!!!  If you are in fact a diabetic, you will need to establish good control of your blood sugars to insure the best chance of a healthy pregnancy.
The typical symptoms of diabetes are: thirst, frequent urination, weight loss (without explanation).  You may also get frequent infections, difficulty healing, increase or decrease of appetite, difficulty breathing or other symptoms best explained by a doctor.  You will need a fasting blood sugar, and possibly a glucose tolerance test to determine if you are a diabetic.
There are diabetics who have perfectly healthy children and maintain good control throughout their pregnancy.  The consequences of poor control can be devastating!  These need to be discussed with a doctor!  My personal experience :  My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage.  The fluctuation in hormone levels cause an interruption in blood flow to my optic nerve, and I lost most of the vision in my left eye.  I later lost the eye.  My second pregnancy was worse.  I developed  a kidney infection, which became chronic kidney disease.  The meds I was given to save my life caused (you guessed it) a miscarriage.  Take my word--nothing is worse!
There are ways to have a healthy pregnancy if you are diabetic, but you will need the guidence of a qualified physician.  Please wait until you have one!!! The money thing will work itself out---but your health is tha most important thing.
Stay well and much good luck!   sheryl

Thank yuou all for your advice. As I had said I am the 3rd generation of a family full of diabetes all in my line have it my grandmother one of  8. My brother doesn't even have hypo.  so maybe ill get lucky, maybe not.  I have been expeiancing some of those symptoms, but weight loss haha, I wish, this all started getting bad when I quit smoking 1 and a half ago. My boyfriend now husband helped me making me a plat of brownies a day. I kicked the smoking but not the brownies, not for about a year. I off now, but I never ate sweets until this and i gained 30 pounds and now have thi weak feeling all the time. I want a way to get my matabolisum back in order. The way it use to be. I would eat anything except sweets and never gain a pound. Now if I don't eat meat as my meal I pass out.  I am tired all day long. I want this veil hangover me lifted off. Any Ideas? I don't belive that I can go to a doctor, Then get insurance , my diabetes will be a pre exsiting condition, then If later in life i needed surgry or anything I could'nt get it. We are talking like 3 months till I have jsurance. I am not going to get pregant until I see a doctor guys don't worry. but please somebody check you insurance and ask if diabetes is a pre exsisting or not. I would appreciate it, thats the only waiting factor, i mean i can come up with the cash to go to doctor its the preexsiting thing im worried about.
ohh thank you all so much for your responces, It means alot to be able to talk to others.

Sorry I didn't get back to you before now---for some reason, I haven't gotten the daily reports.  About the insurance question--- I worked for Prudential Insurance Co for 10 years, but that has been about 10 years ago!  Diabetes may be pre-existing to a health insurance plan, depending on the plan.  Most employer sponsored plans don't check into proir health conditions, so it wouldn't be an issue. An individual plan will probably require a health exam, or at least the answering of some health questions , like "has any professional ever suggested that you have diabetes"  They may also require blood work, in which case it would show up, anyway.  They may even ask for family history--in which case you'd be...in bad shape.  It all depends on the plan.  Couldn't your husband put you on his plan??? Tha t would solve your problem!  They rarely check into a spouse's prior health, especially if it is an employer sponsored plan.  Just a thought...
Hope all is well with you!
