hi,
last time i went around with gestational diabetes, the doc had me checking for ketones. i never had any but i remember it. the reason was that i had lost so much weight during my pregnancy.
this time i went and bought myself some ketone sticks and started testing and i am getting a mild to moderate reading. i have lost over 30 pounds so far during this pregnancy. the only week i DIDNT lose weight was over thanksgiving but the 2 pounds i gained went away on the next dr visit.
my question is whether or not the ketones might be harmful to the baby? i have been looking around but the info i am getting seems to contradict. so i thought i would ask. i *am* going to ask my doc too as well but i was just hoping you all might have a perspective on this question.
lylah

just an update, i just tested for ketones again and my test didnt pick up any at all so maybe i was just looking at residuals from before i began this diabetes food plan. at least i hope so.
i still would like some info about the effect of ketones on pregnancy if anyone knows anything about it.
thanks
lylah

Hi Gryphon,

The best info I can find ( from many sources ) says that "even moderate amounts of ketones during pregnancy could harm the fetus".  WebMD is a site I trust, after many years of use they seem to be consistantly accurate and thourough in their reporting.  Try this article...

thanks. it does look like there is not much information out there on the subject. my doctor seems to be of the opinion that it is probably alright so far. i hope that this ketone thing wasnt going on too long before i was diagnosed.
i really do appreciate you taking the time to look for me.

Many years ago, when I was pregnant (I miscarried...unrelated to ketones, though...) I was warned that ketones can very severely damage the fetus.  They apparently cause mental retardation.  Now this was quite a while ago, and the thinking may have changed since then.  But ketones are generally unhealthy toxins for the mom, anyway, so they can't be good for the baby.  But as long as your doctor is not concerned...try to keep an eye on them for your own sake.  Don't the ketones make you feel sick?

Hi Lylah,
Ketones are often caused by the insulin resistance we pregnant folks face. Many of the hormones we are excreting are making our bodies insulin resistant. if you are getting ketones in your urine, it is important to note your bloodsugar readings as well. If they are high, it probably means your body is requiring more insulin. If you don't already take injections, your doctor may want to consider that as an option.Ketones also mean that your body isn't absorbing the nutrients you and your baby need, which contibutes to your rapid weight loss.
I hope this helps!
Amy
