It's called gestational diabetes...I don't know for sure what they do about it...and could be she'll have it after delivery...could be she won't either. My sister had gestational diabetes with her last baby...(she had 3)...I had 5 children and never had it with a one of them. Then at age 42 I was diagnosed an insulin dependant type2...she (my sister who had the gestational diabetes) has never had another problem with it since the baby was born. That don't mean she won't get it somewhere down the road...but so far so good. Her son is now 12! Good Luck to you...and diabetes is NOT the end of the world..just gotta eat right, and do what the doctor tells ya! Marcia |

Oh. There's nothing like cute
language! "Prego diabetes" is not a term that would yield results in
google. The correct term is gestational diabetes.
It is very treatable, and will tend to go away when she
is no longer pregnant, but she is at increased risk of type 2 diabetes
later. Of course, it depends on whether anyone else in her family
has type 2 diabetes. Keep in mind it's a genetic tendency that can
take a long time to show up; for a long time, the only known diabetic in my
family was a grandparent. Then my mother, my brother, and me.

Don’t worry, as long as she takes
care of her gestational diabetes, her baby should be fine. There are risks such
as the baby being exceptionally large,(and others but nothing that cant usually
be prevented.) and the baby could be at risk for type 2 diabetes later in life.
As for the mom, in most cases, the
gestational diabetes goes away after the pregnancy is over. they think that the
gestational diabetes is caused by the placenta and the diabetes goes when it
does or soon after.
I just went through gestational diabetes
for the second time and was prediabetic before I got pregnant and have returned
to those levels now that I am not pregnant anymore. I went to see a diabetes
educator and nutritionist at our local diabetes center this time and it helped
a great deal.
It is hard to keep yourself on a strict
regimen when you are pregnant especially when it is the only time in your life
you expect to be able to eat anything you want lol but I am coming out of this
pregnancy healthier than I have been in a decade as a result and I have a sweet
healthy baby, though she is colicky but that had nothing to do with the
gestational diabetes lol.
Don’t worry, chances are everything
will be fine.

Gestational daibetes doesn't always or even often
require hospitalization, though. :)

Twenty -
eight years ago I was in the hospital alot carrying my first
child. During one of my stays I met a nice lady who
was my room-mate for two weeks. She was there due to
diab only while she was pregnant.
We have kept in touch and
with both of her pregnancies she was diabetic and afterwards she
was fine.
Good luck to your
daughter. Tell her not to be
discouraged.
