Hi, Thought I would post this here as maybe some of you could help! I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and managed to produce a healthy 9lb14oz baby just over 4 weeks ago. He is called Joseph and is gorgeous and healthy. I am a second time Mum and my 1st baby - Ethan was 8lb7oz - he had reflux and was quite sick when he was little and so his weight gain was poor. Neither me or my husband are big people, and I would imagine I would be on for a 7lbish baby had I not been diabetic. Joseph's weight gain seems to be quite slow - he has gained about an average of 4oz a week since he was born (just 3oz over the last week). I am breastfeeding and want to get this to work this time and have sorted my sugars out! He has been a bit of a fretful feeder over the last week...and not fed for very long. Anyways - I was wondering whether with any of your kids that their weight gain was slow if they started off big - I figure it evens out over time - anyone else had any experiences? Thanks Kat |

Sorry I can't help much with your question...but I did want to congratulate you on your beautiful and healthy children. If you are concerned, the ultimate authority would be their pediatrician. I'm sure you just wanted some "mommy" advice though. Hopefully, one of our mothers will chime in. sheryl |

Hi there. My son is now 13 months old and I breast fed him until he was a little over a year. He was smaller when born since he came 5 weeks early. He was 6 lbs 14 oz. He seemed to gain weight fine. I want to say the average should be about 1 lb-2 lb a month??? I'm not too sure. He was almost 19 pounds when he was 8 months old but then he stopped gaining weight. When I took him for his 1 year appointment he was still in the 19's and the doctor said I needed to offer more food - that breast milk wasn't enough. Of course I was offering some food but he's allergic to some things and a very picky eater. So he said he wanted to see me in 5 weeks to weigh the baby again and I offered more food and he gained 2 pounds. I think if you think your baby may not be getting enough milk you should call a lactation consultant and they can maybe help you out in figuring out what is normal weight gain and such. Sounds like you're producing milk but maybe not enough and you need to supplement or it could just be fine. I honestly can't remember but it's probably an easy answer that a doctor can answer for you. Good luck! BTW, I'm insulin dependent too on the pump. My sugars are now totally out of whack since I've stopped breast feeding and it's driving me crazy! Michelle |

Hi, My name is Jackie and I have type 1(for 14 years) I have 2 daughters, one is 8 and the other is almost 3 months. With daughter #1 I went to 37 weeks and she was 8p9oz and she had a really hard time gaining weight, I did not breast feed her. She is 8 now and is only 53 pounds....and she eats like a pig... Daughter #2 will be 3 months old on 9/1/05 and I made it to 33 weeks with her. She spent 14 days in the n-icu she was 5p5oz, I am breast feeding her and I had her weighed yesterday and she is 10p! I know she is small for being 3 months but...I think she is gaining wonderfully! So I don't know if that helps....those are my two experiences. My big gilr had a hard time gaining and my peewee is gaining like gang busters.(at least to me!) Take care! Jackie |

My son was prediabetes... but he gained slowly. They told me as long as he continues to gain it's not a problem. He was formula feed, but spit a ton.
Congrats on the healthy baby :)
