I am diabetic and 35 weeks pregnant. My dr is suggesting me that They have to induce my labor. Is it necessary cant we let nature take care of it? Please some one answer me.

Currently my baby is doing fine and she weighs 4Lb and 10 Oz.
They measured the babys weight through the antepartum ultrasound. I was not diabetic for my othe two children. Everything went normal. This is my third baby and I am diabetic.

I don't  know what other reasons your doc may have for wanting to induce labor. Labor can progress naturally but it really comes down to what will your blood sugars do during labor and then what will the baby's blood sugar will do.

Labor puts an extreme amount of stress on the body. Isn't 4lbs and 10 oz a low weight for a baby in the 35th week? I don't really know as both of my babies were large and I wasn't diabetic for either of them.

But JoJo had a baby recently. Maybe she can help with the first hand experience.

I wish you luck either way you go.

Hi Paru, are you having any problems  ? are you swelling ? maybe that is why the Dr is saying he needs to induce labor.

The Dr had to induce labor for me , I developed toxemia, where I was retaining fluid... so he induced Labor everything went fine..my son is now 38 years old.But Voni is right 4lbs 8oz sure sounds small for a baby 35 weeks old.

Has the Dr told you to stay off salt..thats what Dr's usually say when you have toxemia..but if your swelling too much it can be very harmful for the baby.

Hey Paru, I have a tad bit of experience with having babies and being diabetic. And being induced. Whats the reason he wants to induce?  And yeah your baby does sound tiny, and do you know if the lungs are matured yet or not. There is tests they can do to let you know if the lungs are matured, and if once they induce if the baby can breath on its own. Don't let them induce without a darn good reason, and NOT before you get that babys lungs checked. Lets us know what happens ok?
Take care!
Mandy

Paru, I was not diabetic when I had my children but, from what I see in the literature and hear from others  diabetics usually have larger babies not smaller.   Like all the others I think there needs to be some really good reason for induced labor. The dr should be up front with you about his reasons. Make him talk to you.

Good thing I'm still lurking, I would of never seen this.
Hi Paru, I have 3 boys, all carried while pregnant, and doc induced labor with my first and third sons, My oldest is 5, 2nd is 3 and youngest is 6 months, almost 7.
The only logical reason I can come up with is the babies weight with me. I was enormus. Huge. Giant. Im a smaller average build, and my babies all came out big, Dylan, 8 6, Tyler 8 15, and logan 10 15, BIG. He did do an amnio with Dylan and Logan, both were fine, develpoed quiet well, apgar scores were perfect. I was 36 weeks with Dylan, 34 with Tyler, and 36 with Logan.
So all three of mine had size to them, if your baby is 4  or 5 pounds, I would question doc. Being diabetic, in my opinion, you got lucky and dont have a baby with a higher birth weight, which is common with the diabetes. Like I said, I was an ox with all three of them.
How much weight have you put on, is this Gestational diabetes, type one or two? How have your blood sugars been? What about blood work, anything abnmormal?
Jojo

By the way, thinking about it, Dylans was the only true labor and delivery, Tyler was emergency c-section, and Logan was C-section because I already had a c-section........36 weeks along, with the amnio, was at the time type 1 for 7 years, with a lot of poor control, being pregnant with Dylan is what straightened me out. Hi Friends,

Thank you so much for replying to my question right away. I believe my doc assumes my baby might get big. I am Type II diabetic. My A1c was 6.5 before I got pregnant. My sugar has been under control throughout my pregnancy expect the 4th month and now it is jumping up after lunch to 200Mgdl. Morning sugars are fine and so as my fasting is under 100. I will double check with my doc regarding inducing labor since the baby is small. I do not have any swelling or any other problem. Thank god. Babys lungs looks alright. She is breathing well and swallowing the amnotic fluid. Very active. I have been going for anteportum test once a month to check the babys well being.

Happy Holidays.
Paru

Hi there.  Not really much new to add but I know when I was pregnant I was going to get induced as well at 37 weeks because the baby was getting bigger and my doctor did not want the baby to get too big and have problems coming out of the birth canal.  Luckily for me the baby wanted out sooner than planned and he came out at 35 weeks weighing 6 lbs 14 oz.  My doctor said he probably would have been close to 10 lbs if he went full term.  Your baby seems small enough to wait but I'm not a phsyician so I can't say.  I would ask for another ultrasound closer to due date and see if the baby is still smaller.
