Hi everyone.  Well looks like I need to change out my Disetronic D-tron pump which I absolutely love.  They no longer will do the technical inspection on it.  So I have a decision to make...my insurance covers the new Animas 2020 or the MiniMed (not sure which model but I think the Paradigm).  I have to decide rather quickly.  I must say I've been leaning towards Animas just from customer service issues I've heard concerning MiniMed.  And to kind of fuel that belief that has already been established was the fact that the MiniMed rep took almost 2 days to call me back and then said she would call me last night and never did. I told her I wanted to see the pump but none of the information events was feasible for me to attend.  However the Animas rep called me within 2 hours of my message while he was out of the office for a few days and set up an in-home consultation for this week.  Plus the MiniMed lady was trash talking about Animas and was trying to sell me on their excellent customer service and the continuous blood glucose system which quite frankly I have no interest in and not to mention that Kaiser doesn't cover it so I'd have to pay for it out of pocket but that she thinks within 2 years Kaiser will cover it so I'd have to pay for the machine and supplies which would be $40 for each infusion set which needs to be changed every few days.  can't afford that nor do I want to wear 2 infusion sets.  So I'm looking to hear from current users for your opinions and advice. I 'm not familiar with either of the pumps.  Thanks for your help!

Michelle,
I have the Minimed 522 since July and I love it.  I had the Minimed 511 before that.  I trust my pump CDE because she sees all the pumps on so many patients and knows when there is a problem with a company.  She had told me maybe a year ago to avoid Animas because of quality control problems, but when i saw her recently she said that those problems have gone away now and she thinks Animas is a good choice again as well as Minimed.  She said the Animas screen is the only one that is easy to read, so that is something to think about.

I've just gone from Animas to Cozmo, due to some features I wanted.
The new Animas screen is great, really easy for people to read.  I have a good friend starting on one tomorrow.  The feature I wanted was more reminders, ways to customize them and the ability to have a meter send my BG right to the pump.
I have to agree that supposedly a lot of mechanical problems are to have been worked out with the new 2020.  The thing I noticed from being on a older Animas to now, is that now Johnson and Johnson runs Animas.  I had some people there that I knew, and I could no longer Email them or talk to them about anything, after the takeover.

Regardless, it is your choice and you have to investigate what you are interested in.  For myself, a CGMS is not anything I want, and therefore was never a selling point to me.  But then again, the 2020 was not exactly the upgrade I expected it to be either.
It is strictly YMMV (your mileage may vary).  I would truly investigate everything.  Not getting calls back from the reps though, is something to consider.

Hi Michelle, I started out 3 years ago with Minimed's Paradigm 715 and am now using the 722.  I can't say enough about how much I love it.  I've never had any bad issues with customer service at all; only good things.  One of the features that I love the most with my pump is the Bolus Wizard.  Once you first program all your criteria into it, everytime you need to bolus, it figures out what you need taking into consideration what insulin you have 'onboard',etc.  And I also like how my meter sends the results (via radio frequency waves) to the pump ~ so I don't have to enter it in myself.  These are just a couple of the features that I really like.  As Gelsey said, this is something that you'll have to investigate yourself.  Please ask if you have any questions!
And good luck
Take care
Chris

One more thought--I did what I swore not ever to do, and bought my Cozmo sight unseen.  Fortunately I love this pump.
However, I dont advise this.
I always say, get the rep to come to your house or doctors office and actually play around with the pump.
And, go on the web and try out the virtual pump.  Animas has this, I am not sure if MM does or not....

Thank you all for your input.  I met with the Animas rep on Friday. I must say I was impressed with the pump.  It was so different from my current pump but yet seemed so easy to use.  I'm sure I wouldn't use all the features that it has but the menu was so easy to find anything you needed and I like the bolus shortcut.  The screen is like a cell phone - easy and modern looking. It actually looks like you're wearing a high tech cell phone versus a medical device.  I must say I was very pleased with it.  The MiniMed rep finally called me back 2 days after the day she said she would call me back to tell me about an information even that wasn't even close to my home and it wasn't even one to go check out the pump - it was like on carb counting or something.  So I have yet to see the MiniMed pump. I do have the disc and information packet but I must say I think I'm already sold on the Animas.  What I liked to about the Animas rep was he didn't talk bad about MiniMed and told me to go check it out and compare and see which I preferred.  No pressure at all.  Very unlike the MiniMed rep when I spoke to her the first time.  So I guess I will have to decide soon.  Thanks for listening and for your help!

Which pump to use... Animas or Medtronic Minimed.
Hum.
I would honestly go with ANIMAS. Even though I am not a animas user, but a cozmo user. If I had the two above choices, then it would animas.
Reasons why:
Standard leur lock set
customer service is wonderful (I have got some of my sets from them, so I have spoken to them).

Reasons why NOT with medtronic Minimed:
Customer service for 90% of the people is something to wonder about
Billing people several months if not years later after the fact (I have heard of people recieving a bill from them 3 years or so AFTER their order, and they demanding payment or being sent to collections for them not billing within a specific time frame).
You are stuck with them. You can not go shopping for different sets for their pumps, as they are propietory (you can only use medtronic minimed infusion sets, unlike the animas which has a standard leur lock feature.. you can shop from Disetronic now Accu-Chek, Animas, Deltec or Minimed's 50x series sets).

Another issue with Medtronic Minimed, is their reps are extreamly pushy, saying their products are superior to other products on the market, ect.
Yes, they have about 60% of the market in insulin pumps, but they are loosing more and more ground as people are going to other pump makers (animas, accu-chek [used to be disetronic], deltec [smiths medical md], omnipod [which is not sold us wide, just select areas, and some insurances' still will not pay for the omnipod if they are sold in your location]).

So with your previous use of the Disetronic Dtron, and you have sets left over, If you go to the medtronic minimed pump, you will have to toss all the infusion sets into the garbage and could not use them with the pump, unless you can use a particular cartridge from a particular company [which is doubtfull with keizer ins.] which allows the paradigm user to use leur lock infusion sets, but with the animas, you could, as it is a standard leur lock pump

Almost all medtronic minimed user will say that their pump is the best, but a pump is better than no pump.
I honestly would ask both companies if you can do a 3 day saline trial to decide on which pump to use. That way, you can get the feel for both pumps, and decide on which pump you honestly would use. For you only get a 30 day money back time. and if you don't get your training until AFTER the 30 day period you might be stuck for 4 years with a pump you might not like. Better to do a 3-4 day saline trial to see which pump you like the best.

I have to respectfully disagree with Kitty Loves.  On the insulin pumpers board, the largest pumpers information sharing network, most people do NOT report any customer service problems with Minimed.  There are some people who have had problems, but I would estimate no more than 10% of Minimed users, at the highest estimate.  I have always found the customer service to be way beyond expectations, even when I was in the wrong.  The are very responsive to any problem, and send an overnight replacement pump if there is any doubt there could be something amisss with the pump.

My rep is a total sweetheart and she never talks down about the other companies.  She has given me so many freebies and she is a delight to work with.

I don't have a problem about the sets being proprietary either, since there are so many choices of sets to use with the Minimed.  I get mine from a third party supplier, and receive them within 48 hours of my order.

I hope this balances out the negative comments so you can fairly consider your choices.

Hi Chris
I just started using the pump several days ago. I have a question about the hole that is left after you remove the injected piece and switch to a new site. It leaves a red spot or scab. Does that go away? Generally how long? Are you left with many red spots?

Hi Isabella,

Congratulations on your new pump!

I get those red spots as well.  What I've found is ..the longer you leave your site in, the long the red spot will stay with you.  So, try to limit leaving your site in for 3 to 4 days.  I used to go 6 to 7 days before changing mine and I always got really bad red itchy sites. The spots do go away after a couple of weeks.  Between sets, I will moisturize with sweet almond oil or vitamine E oil and that seems to help too.

How do you like using the pump besides this issue?

Take care
Chris
