Ok i've been on insulin since I was diagnosed 16 yrs ago but never told which type I am.
I take 70 unit of lantus nightly now and am supposed to continue increasing it by 5 units at a time until fasting numbers come down to below 120.  Problem is if they get that low I usually have bottomed out during the night.  I also take 30 units of novolog for meals and a sliding scale starting at 120 and going 2 units every 40 numbers it goes up.  Most times I'm taking 40 or more units for meals due to the sliding scale question is do I continue to take the 40 or more units in the evening meal if i'm bottoming out during the night even with a nighttime snack which is another shot altogether.
The dr wants tight control due to hemorrage starting in right eye and the eye doc has already told me I would go blind due to diabetes maybe within 10 yrs or so if not sooner.
On top of this I have a small area of my heart that doesn't get oxygenated blood to it and that causes lots of shortness of breath combined with the copd and with severe back pain i'm limited on amount if exercise I can due.  I can't seem to walk more than a few feet most days without being short of breath.
I also have nueropathy in both hands and feet which makes matters worse.
Not sure what to do about the lows but cant keep having the highs either.
Now I have the stress of the hubby being gone and being alone most evenings making it even harder to eat it was bad before with the gastroparesis but not having anyone here until after 11pm most nights what do I do for meals at night.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Missy

Missy I'm a type 2 diabetic and I'm on lantus and for diabetes 1 pill in the morning. I take 20 units of lantue just before bed time, it is a 24 hour insulin [slow acting]. My blood sugar fasting runs from 98 to about 135, depending on what I eat that night. My sister has had the problem with hemorraging of her right eye. blood sugar around 450, also she had a stroke, that is when she was told she had diabetes. now for her its mostly diet and eating small porchens at a time, she eats 6 meals aday. Its the same as us eating 3 meals and 3 snacks aday. she has a husband that eats regular meals and she fixes like tv dinners from that for her meals and just uses the micro to heat them up.
I know this isn't much help but you need your doctor to run some test to see what type of diabetic you are, by knowing it should be easer to deal with it.

Missy I would say since you've had diabeties since 16 that you are a type 1, your Dr should be able to tell you .It sounds like you may need to cut back on your night time insulin. But it would be best to check with your Dr. Maybe just call him , maybe he will answer your question without having to go in.

Missy..... I'm no doctor just a T1 diabetic on insulin for 34 yrs..... so please, as Mary suggested, speak with your doctor before you do anything but maybe you can get some ideas to talk over with him/her.....
First of all, you have to get yourself on a consistant and timed eating schedule.... no matter if anyone else is home or not..... and not matter what time others are eating....if you have eaten, you don't eat with them again.  If you have to eat by yourself, you have to eat by yourself..... that's all there is to it.
I take 23 units of Lantus every morning.... and that's it for me.... no regular, no pills...just that amount of Lantus..... but this is what I eat during the course of the day....
Breakfast: 8a.m.
cup of black coffee
1/3 c. dry oatmeal with enough soy milk to moisten.... microwave it and more soy milk to moisten again....
sprinkled with 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
4 prunes cut up into oatmeal
no sweetner....
Lunch: 12 noon
1/2 c. carb as in brown rice or two slices of Ezekiel bread.... no potatoes, chips, white breads/rice or any of that
a vegetable... green beans, turnip, romaine lettuce, fresh carrot cut up, celery, onion, garlic.(no peas, corn or starchy veggies)
maybe some chicken, tuna, salmon or makeral as they are the only meats that I eat.
Supper:
salad made with romaine lettuce.
snack: 2 sl. of ezekiel bread and 1 cup of puffed brown rice with soy milk to moisten.
All meals/snacks are eaten with water... no dairy, no sodas....

And that is it for the day..... if I can keep on my own schedule (which most days I can) I'm fine with that menu....

But that is me.... like I said, the most important thing you can do is get on YOUR OWN eating schedule.  That should help your morning bs's... if you're loading up at 11:00 at night, it isn't any wonder your morning fastings are higher than 120.
I know that you can't get into a rigorous exercise routine at this point but if you can at least get your eating scheduled and maintained, that should help you tremendously.
I'm going to say this and understand that this is just my opinion..... if you can get to a dietition, you should..... I think you are taking alot of insulin and that is putting you on a rollercoaster..... you just got to start somewheres to get a grip on managing your diabetes.... just my opinion hon.... and we've all been in the very place you are so these words are coming from experience... not any kind of judgment..... keep posting and let us know how you are doing, okay?  see ya. Peace,Cheryl

Thanks for the ideas.  Guess I should have added i'm on a night schedule to start with I get up around7pm and go to bed somewhere between 8am and noon.
I'm bottoming out around 6am after doing my housework or what I can of it.  My morning numbers are the reading I take when I do wake up tho.  I also have delayed gastric emptying and other stomach problems which make it hard to be on a schedule.  I eat as I can due to them.   With the neuropathy in  my hands it makes it hard to cook or type even.  Kids aren't helping with the cooking issue after telling there dad before he left they would.  They buy me things like hot pockets or themselves pizzas to eat and leave me hanging some nights which means microwave foods if we have any or just not eatting at all which is no big deal for me due to not really getting hungry and with all the pain can't  stand at the stove to cook anymore.
Sorry should have added all this before.
Missy

geez, Missy..... I don't know what to tell ya after reading your added post here.... except try to get some help with a dietition or your dr. (someone that can weave everything that is ailing you with a good meal/eating plan)..... goodness, gf, that puts alot on your plate to deal with.... just please keep posting and let us know how you are doing.... see ya. Peace,Cheryl
