Hiya everyone, my name is Shawna and I'm 35, I have type 2 diabetes diagnosed on Feb 19, 2006. I am on 70 units of lantus at night, and humalog automatically 12 units before meals then if above 150 have a sliding scale. For the most part this schedule works. But my numbers are still high. I have other issues besides having diabetes...I have re-occuring cellulitis on my legs monthly which gets treated by iv antibiotics-vancomyacin, the reason I keep getting the cellulitis is due to a skin condition I have which is called lichen simplex chronicus. I've been dealing with the cellulitis steady since last november but am a staff carrier since my teen years which has given me a few bouts over the years. I also have been diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver. It was just a fatty liver for the past 2 years and after my biopsy a few months ago they discovered it was much more than just a fatty liver. I have been told to get the bariatric surgery done to get my liver to try to function normally(no guarantees). I am overweight currently weighing in at 296, have been the same weight since i was diagnosed with diabetes. I have tried numerous of ways to lose weight, sometimes losing 1 to 2 lbs and then back to the same weight. My insurance of course will not cover the surgery, so we are appealing the ins co to try.I do have a treadmill here at the house and get on it when able to, but when i have the cellulitis and am being treated for it which is 14 day treatment I am not aloud to stress my legs out and be on my feet. My doc said not too long ago, I could give you purified air and it would turn to fat in your body , that is how much your liver is not functioning. I am a Christian stay at home mom, mom of 6, gave birth to 4..we have 3 girls 3 boys ranging from 3 1/2 yrs up to 19 yrs. We have a yours mine and ours type of family. So currently I applied for disability, and am trying to get my doc to allow me to take byetta(did some research, and my moms a nurse was able to look in med journals) to see if that will help with the weight, anythings worth a try. Looking forwards to making some friends here, and learn some new info, and just enjoy company and encouragement. If you got this far in this message, Amen! Have a great day! |

Good Morning Shawna and welcome to the group~ had to giggle just a bit when you said if you got this far... Amen.... lol! You will find pretty quickly around here that we do indeed read the long messages as well as the short ones... Although i will say if you would enlarge your font size to a size 5 it will be much easier for our friends here with eye problems to read them quicker and respond... Thanks for doing that for them! We really appreciate it! you certainly have your hands full with all those precious kiddos... wow.. congrats to you all! Know you wanna be the healthest you can be for them. Strange thing about diabetes for many of us here there are more than one thing going on with our bodies... some have been very fortunate to have had diabetes for 30 something years and have no complications from it. Course the better ones control can be the better.(well of course without having those pesty lows). Please make yourself at home and come join us on posting your bg's numbers with us... we used to have at least 20 replies there everyday but as always real life gets in the way sometimes. You have come to a great group of giving, caring and very supportive friends... Hope you feel right at home quickly! Keep smiling, Cuddles/Kathy Type 1~ 36 plus years 46 plus years young.. lol! |

Hello Shawna, welcome to the group. My name is Mary and i am a new member also. I am type 2 diabetic. I take 1000 mg of metformin twice a day, novolog 30 to 40 units before meals, symlin 20 units before meals and 100 units of lantus at bedtime. I was told by my doctor that since i was on insulin i could not take byetta that i had to take symlin. A year ago i weighed 502 lbs but now i am around 400 lbs. I have a doctor appt tomorrow so i will find out exactly what i weigh now. I would rather try to lose the weight on my own instead of having surgery. I have had several major surgeries in my life and really do not want to have any more. I am 50 yrs old divorced and live in Kansas City. I moved here 5 months ago to get better medical care. I have 3 kids all grown and on their own and 6 grandkids with another one on the way. I live alone with my 2 small 9 yr old dogs. Take care~~~~~~~Mary~~~~~~~ |

Welcome Shawna. I have type 2 diabetes. I also need to lose a lot of weight. I am too old for the stomach surgery. Here they don't take anyone over 70. I take 54 units of lantis at night and 10 units of humalog for every 10 grams of carb at meals. If I am high I correct with the sliding scale of the humalog. I have 2 grown children and 1 grandson. I also was a stay at home mom but I worked from my home as a music teacher. You have a lot of health isssues. I guess that is the same for most of us here. I hope you will post often and let us know how you are doing. Hope you enjoy being in the group. Bar |

Welcome Shawna! This group is great for helping when and where they can. I don't actually know who here can help with the kids issue, I myself have only two. However, I have a 19 year old son and a 16 year old son, so, I can sort of relate to what ever you are going through with your older children. I am 38, and type 2 diabetic, diagnosed over a year ago. I joined here just shortly after finding out. Hope you enjoy your new friends here, cause that is what we are all going to be. Huggles... Debra |

Hi shawna I recently rejoined this group. I've been an insulin dependent for 16 yrs now. I have two kids both grown one 18 and the other about to turn 20. I also have weight issues and just yesterday saw a dietician for the first time......lol. Got some good advice on some snack stuff and had some other things explained in more detail. It was reading over her shoulder at my chart I found out what they have me listed as............lol. Like some here I have multiple complications from diabetes and nobody supporting me in the house or if I bought the right foods they ate them first......Kids gotta love them. Good to see you jumping in. Missy |

Welcome Shawna! Glad you are here. I was diagnosed Dec. 16, 2003. I am a 2. At first I was on meds - Advantamet. I guess I was on that for 9 months. It was August the following year when the doctor took me off it. Now I control my blood sugars with diet and exercise. It's all a new way of life. I am 60, but I feel younger than when I was diagnosed. I have 4 adult children. I have learned so much here. And met some wonderful people. Hugs, Angelbear |
