I cannot remember a time when I was not getting books from the library     I got a card as soon as I could sign my name      some of the books I read back then were       The Little House on the Prairie series  and there was a series about twins from different countries      The Eskimo Twins and so on      1 of the books I read as a teen was Marjorie Morningstar  about a girls 1st love        as a stay at home wife and mother--I don't know what I would have done without the library     as soon as my children were born into the stroller they would go     the little basket filled with books going and coming back     when they were old enough they got picture books on my card    and could not wait until they were able to sign their names to get their own cards             now for the first time I don't live within walking distance of the library           but with my computer and my library card I am able to download books to read on my computer   and I also download books on tape that I can transfer to portable players or listen to on the computer

Ohhhh... do I ever remember  my first library ! It was in Veterens Park, right across from the ocean in Redondo Beach. A beautiful old library, one my Mother went to as a child ! Our childrens section was not upstairs but down in the basement. Do you know... I can see myself now, going down those steps as a small girl, and feeling enchanted by all the wonderful books. I try and instill a love of books with all my granddaughters, so far so good. Of course I did the same with my two girls.
Thanks for the memories ladies !
Sherry

My first library had marble steps and I remember trying to tiptoe so I wouldn't make a noise going up them and going to the front desk to get my first card was like a quiet almost reverent experience.  HENCE why the noise in today's library drives me NUTS!

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh  memories!

Stairs and childrens' libraries.  Someone didn't think things through.  It was my oldest sister who fell down the flight of stairs because she just couldn't wait to start reading the book she just checked out.  By the time I started going to the library, that story had been drummed into my head so I wouldn't read on those steps.  LOL

Anyone else take a tumble in the library?

Awww thanks Tabby ! You're a sweetie !  Life just got extra busy, but I'm working at getting all my ducks in a row, healthwise and other, so it won't be so chaotic. Hope to check in here daily, at least when the girls are napping if nothing else !

I have been to all types of libraries over the years         old ones, modern ones and kiosks    the ones I always loved were the old ones      the ones that were huge and looked like they were built ages ago    the ones with wooden floors  and nooks and crannies and window seats where you could curl up and start reading while you were waiting for your friends to finish getting their books

I agree with you, Tabby.  It seems like people appreciated books and literature more in the past than they do now.  Those libraries were built with so much attention to detail.  The grandness of them shows so much respect for books and also for the readers of books.

I recently went to Chicago for the first time and visited the original Chicago public library.  I don't know if you have ever been there Tabby, but it is the most amazing building dedicated to books that I have ever seen.  It has a beautiful stained glass dome on top, wide marble staircases, engaved quotes on the walls about reading in all the classic languages as well as in English.  It is now used as the city's cultural center.  How wonderful that they have kept it in such wonderful condition for everyone to enjoy!

no I have never been there     1 of the libraries I used to go to had steps leading up to it   and a vestible[sp?]    and over the entrance was a quotation carved --I don't remember what it was but it was about books      you felt almost as if you were going into a church

At the other extreme is another library I visited on one of my business trips - the new downtown Seattle Public Library.  The upper floor is all glass, bringing as much natural light as possible into the gray winters of Seattle and letting people look outside in between reading their chapters.  It is a pretty amazing space!

And then you have the original Library of Congress building - the Jefferson Building.  Fabulous place.  I have never taken an official tour of it, so if anyone comes to Washington, let me know so we can tour it together.

Do any of you know the main Public Library in New York. It is so amazing one can get lost in it and an absolute majestic building. Whatever one needs you can find it there.I've become a regular reader again in the 80's and have now read all of Robin Cooks, Tess Garritson's and so many other Authors, I cannot picture myself anymore without a good book to turn to before retiring at night.(Daytime is out, my eyes go very blurry) Hugs to all and read on.

When I was a kid I grew up in Miami...we had the book moblie come to our neighborhood...I always looked forward to it being there...I loved to read the Pippy Longstockings books...Then when I moved to Nebraska we had and old library with woodens floors tables and shelves...it had a really cool feel to it...I was sad when it was torn down...now I go to a new modern one...I make a trip there every 2 weeks...I couldn't stand not to be able to go...

But there is one thing I hate about library books and thats the food stains people leave behind...its just plain gross to see other peoples crud in a book your reading...I always clean off the front and back of the books I check out...I hate to feel its stickiness or see crud on it...so

Please respect the books and others  who read them and help keep them clean (!!!)

I forgot about the book mobile        we had 1 that came for about a year and then stopped
I agree with you about stains on books---we were taught to respect books      I can never throw a book away     I think now people are just so glad to have someone read books that they don't stress proper care     I remember a elementary school teacher showing us the proper way to open a new book

Still go to my first library.   It is an old building that was constructed in 1907.  I must be an oddball! My first books was history books that my daddy helped me read.  Guess that is why I love history!
