Thanks, Mary! If wanting something alot helps, I am sure to get it. I guess I just have to hope the other applicants do not want it as much as I do! I'll let you know tomorrow night how it went..... |

I think the interview went pretty well. It was with 3 women about my age - the Branch Manager, the ILL person, and the Adult Services Director. I got the best feeling when they asked me if I would consider teaching introductory Internet classes. My eyes lit up and I said "Oh YES! I would really enjoy that!" The 3 of them just looked over their eyeglasses at each other and made little check marks in their folders. So now I just have to hope that the other people being interviewed all have something wrong with them. I have to wait until next week to find out......... And then if I do get it, I have to make one of the biggest changes of my life.....retiring from the Feds........going back to the public library after 31 years......... Wish me luck! |

((((((JULIE)))))) I hope all goes well!! Class has been a bit in a whirlwind! Prof cancelled twice and she keeps redoing the syllabus and I am going CRAZY!! I hope we can settle down and get some actually work done in class ~ we have spent two classes on the PC ~ which I don't mind but it's not what I want to learn! the one class I missed (colonoscope ~ just routine) they did lookups in LC vs Sears! The class got the whole night to do this and finish up the following week before we did PC again! well I had to do the whole thing while doing the new PC stuff and helping the person next to me! I GOT A LITTLE FRAZZLED!!!! to say the least!!! Got some papers back and feel a little better about what she expects! So we'll see what next class brings! cmxev ~ how are you doing?? what classes are you taking?? full time or part time?? where? Have you decided on a certain field?? mj |

MJ, what do you mean by PC? Personal Computer? Public Catalog? In my job, almost all my work is done on the computer. All the reference tools I need are on there - I rarely look at anything in paper anymore. And since my reference work is done mostly by email, this makes it easy to attach the reference to an email. Even when I do find something in paper, I scan it and turn it into a PDF so I can email it. This is the way my users need it, since they have gone to electronic workpapers - paper has become a thing of the past at the GAO. Now you can tell me that PC meant something else......... By the way, do you know Spanish? Now that I am job hunting, I am coming to realize that a very sought after skill is knowledge of Spanish. I told them Thursday that I understood it but couldn't speak it. They seemed pleased that I even understood it. So in my thank you letter to them today, I promised to take Spanish classes after I get the job! Other languages that are spoken in your community and desire to teach.....these are the most needed skills. Julie |

sooo sorry PC is personal computer! LOL! Now I have to watch out for Computer terms having Library terms!!!! LOL!!! Spanish is good to know ~ I have no talent there or any other language! In my Library ~ Spanish would be a major plus but we also have polish, russian, Armenian, and a few others that escape me at the moment! It is a melting pot for sure! Even had an Egyptian couple the other day! They were in our library the day they arrived in the country ~ couldn't speak much English but they knew to come to the library for internet!!!! WHAT A WORLD!!! mj |

Aren't libraries wonderful? My little branch library (not the one where I applied for the job) has almost all foreign-born staff. It is like a UN meeting to go there. I wish I could work there, but it is small, very small staff. The librarians there told me about the other opening.....and I haven't heard a word from them....... Interview was last Thursday! I like to think of the public library as a "third place" - not home, not work - but the place where people congregate and come together in a community to learn, to communicate, to participate in government. I know coffee shops fit the description better than alot of libraries, but I think that is the ideal libraries should aspire to. I'm not talented in languages either. I think people who know two languages can learn the third more easily. I have a friend - 81 years old - who used to be a Navy wife and traveled the world with both her father and her husband - she knows about 8 languages. How rich her life has been! Julie |

WOW !! ! 8 languages!!! I think that is EDUCATED!!!! I long to learn Latin, Gaelic, & French ~ to speak fluently Ahhhhhhh to dream! I agree Libraries are a meeting place BUT most of them are not designed to be used as such and cause disturbances for those who look as libraries as quiet places to read and study! Ours is open floor from children's to adults! with computers in the middle! NOT conducive to quiet at all! mj |

I think they need quiet areas and areas where discussion is fine. An entire quiet library would be totally depressing! |
